Are Yellowjackets Summer’s Worst Pest Menace? What to Know and Do

Yellowjackets can disrupt late-summer gatherings, but food sanitation, safe trap use, and leaving nests undisturbed can help reduce risk.

Yellowjackets can be among the most troublesome stinging insects at summer and early-fall gatherings: they forage around food and drinks, and they may sting repeatedly when defending a nest. They are not simply pests, though; they also prey on other insects and scavenge organic material. To reduce encounters, cover food, clean spills, secure garbage, and leave suspected nests alone. Traps may reduce foragers, but they will not remove an established colony.

Why yellowjackets become a bigger nuisance later in the season

Yellowjackets are wasps, not bees. A colony starts in the warm season and grows as workers emerge. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes them as nuisance pests in late summer, while Oregon State University Extension says colonies grow through summer and commonly reach peak size in late summer or early fall. Timing varies by location and species, so this is not a fixed nationwide calendar.

Workers forage for food and may visit outdoor meals and drinks. Their ability to sting repeatedly, combined with nest defense, makes them a concern around people. EPA school integrated pest management guidance also describes yellowjackets as predators and scavengers, roles that can be beneficial even though their presence near people creates risk. EPA school IPM guidance.

Where yellowjackets nest—and how to recognize a possible nest

Nests can be underground, inside wall voids or other protected cavities, or suspended as enclosed paper structures. Repeated traffic in and out of one opening may indicate a nest. Observe only from a safe distance; do not approach to confirm it, block the entrance, or disturb the area. Virginia Cooperative Extension discusses nest locations and seasonal behavior at its yellowjacket guidance; Oregon State Extension also advises keeping away from nests at its yellowjacket advice page.

How to make a picnic or outdoor area less attractive

Start with food and garbage

  • Cover food and sweet drinks when they are not being served.
  • Clean spills promptly.
  • Keep garbage containers closed and empty them frequently.

These sanitation steps reduce access to common attractants and are recommended in EPA school IPM guidance.

Use traps only for foragers

Yellowjacket bait traps may reduce the number of workers foraging around an area, but trapping does not eliminate an established colony. If you use a trap, follow its product instructions, place it around the perimeter rather than beside the gathering, and keep it out of children’s reach. EPA guidance and Penn State Extension both distinguish reducing foragers from removing a colony.

What to do about a nest

A nest is a different problem from individual yellowjackets at a table. A licensed pest-management professional is the safer choice when a nest is near people or pets, inside an occupied structure, or when anyone at risk has a known sting allergy. Oregon State Extension specifically recommends professional help for nests near people or pets; Penn State Extension discusses the risks associated with colony removal and sting allergies.

Some extension guidance discusses labeled nest treatments for certain situations, but a pesticide must be labeled for the pest and the actual site. Do not improvise with gasoline, diesel, bleach, smoke, or fire; these are not appropriate nest treatments. Avoid disturbing a suspected nest while deciding what to do.

Choosing the right response

Situation Practical response What it can and cannot do
Yellowjackets are visiting food or drinks; no nest is apparent Cover food and drinks, clean spills, secure garbage; consider a perimeter bait trap used according to its instructions. Reduces attractants and may reduce foraging workers; trapping will not remove an established colony. EPA IPM guidance and Penn State Extension.
A suspected nest is near people, pets, or an occupied structure Keep away and contact a licensed pest-management professional. Addresses the nest with professional help; do not approach or disturb it. Oregon State Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Someone who may be exposed has a known sting allergy Do not attempt colony removal; seek professional pest-management help. Avoids putting the person at risk during nest treatment. Penn State Extension.
