A 2025 paper proposes a pulley-like system using counterweights and sliding ramps, but it remains a proposed construction model—not an established archaeological conclusion. The evidence supports skilled human engineering, while the precise construction sequence is still uncertain.
What the “high-tech machine” claim means
The phrase can make a proposed mechanism sound like a confirmed discovery. The distinction matters: a paper proposing how a pyramid might have been built is not evidence that archaeologists uncovered that machine or established it as the method used.
A 2025 paper in npj Heritage Science proposes pulley-like systems that use counterweights on sliding ramps to help move stones during construction of Khufu’s Great Pyramid. The proposal is about a possible mechanical arrangement; it does not establish that a complete machine was discovered inside the pyramid or that the method is accepted as the definitive explanation. Which pyramid is at issue?
Khufu’s Great Pyramid stands at Giza and served as his tomb. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities dates his reign to about 2589–2566 BC. Its page estimates construction took 10–20 years, while emphasizing that the exact method remains uncertain. See the Ministry’s Great Pyramid overview.

A separate 2024 hydraulic-lift proposal concerns Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara, not Khufu’s pyramid at Giza. Its authors suggest that water-related structures may have supported a float-based lift and describe the idea as a possible mechanism and a direction for further research. What evidence supports human engineering?
The evidence discussed by Egyptologists and museum sources points to tools, hauling, prepared surfaces and water transport—not to one proven, complete construction blueprint.

- Quarrying tools: Egyptologist Donald B. Redford describes copper chisels used for some stonework and hard dolerite pounders for quarrying granite. The Smithsonian also discusses copper tools in its overview of pyramid construction. Penn State’s interview with Redford and the Smithsonian overview give context.
- Sledges and lubricated slipways: Redford describes stones dragged by teams of people or oxen over prepared, lubricated surfaces. He points to an ancient tomb scene depicting 173 men pulling an alabaster statue on four ropes while a worker lubricates the path. That scene shows a hauling method; it does not document the Great Pyramid’s crew size.
- Water transport: The Ministry says higher-quality limestone used for the pyramid’s exterior was brought from Turah by ship. Transporting stone by water is one part of the logistics, not an explanation of how every block was raised into place.
- Ramps and leveling: Redford discusses mud-brick ramps coated with plaster chips and a proposed wrap-around arrangement. The Smithsonian notes that water-filled trenches may have helped with leveling. These are pieces of the engineering picture, not proof of one universally accepted ramp design.
In the Penn State interview, Redford also recounts taking part in a modern demonstration in which workers pulled a heavy granite block. Such a demonstration helps illustrate that coordinated human hauling is possible; it does not prove that the same crew size or precise procedure was used at Giza. - Monument: Does the proposal address Khufu’s pyramid at Giza, or another structure such as Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara?
- Evidence versus interpretation: Is the claim based on an observed feature or ancient depiction, or is it an engineering model that interprets features as parts of a mechanism?
- Scope: Does the method explain a specific task—such as hauling, leveling or lifting—or claim to account for the entire build?
- Certainty: Do the authors describe a possibility or hypothesis, or is the method established by multiple lines of evidence? A publication proposing a mechanism does not, by itself, establish consensus.
