All About the Radial Arm Saw: Uses, Operation and Safety

A radial arm saw can crosscut or rip with a movable blade head, but safe use depends on the exact saw’s setup, guards and manual.

A radial arm saw is a circular saw whose motor and blade move on an adjustable arm above a worktable. Depending on the setup, it can make crosscuts across a board or rip cuts along its length. It also presents serious risks: blade contact, kickback and flying debris. Use the manual for the exact saw before operating or adjusting it, or choosing a blade or attachment.

What is a radial arm saw used for?

A radial arm saw cuts wood with a circular blade mounted on a head that travels along an arm. The arm can be raised or lowered and swung side to side, allowing changes to cutting depth and horizontal angle. OSHA describes the saw as capable of cutting across or with the grain, depending on configuration.

Its adjustable head makes it useful for more than one kind of cut, but capability does not mean every cut or accessory is appropriate for every machine. The saw’s manual and the instructions for any attachment determine what the specific model is intended to do.

How does a radial arm saw work?

In a crosscut configuration, the workpiece is held against a fence while the saw head travels across it. OSHA’s description says the operator pushes the workpiece away from them against the fence. For ripping, the blade is set parallel to the fence and the stock is fed through. OSHA also describes the blade rotating upward toward the operator during the operation it outlines.

These descriptions explain the basic arrangements, not a universal operating procedure. Setup, feed direction, guard position and permitted cuts vary by saw. Follow the specific manual rather than adapting a procedure from another model or a general overview.

Are radial arm saws safe?

They can be used with appropriate safeguards and procedures, but OSHA identifies substantial hazards that require attention:

  • Blade contact: The exposed rotating blade can cause severe injury. A saw head that travels beyond the table edge can create an additional contact hazard.
  • Kickback: Stock caught by the blade or fed in the wrong direction can be thrown toward the operator. During ripping, a closing kerf can bind the blade.
  • Flying debris: Chips, splinters or broken teeth may be ejected from the cutting area.

OSHA’s radial-saw guidance describes an upper fixed hood enclosing the blade and arbor and a self-adjusting guard for the lower blade, suited to the stock thickness. It also describes an effective return device and an adjustable stop to limit forward travel during repeat cuts. For ripping, its guidance describes non-kickback fingers and a spreader to help prevent binding. The exact required configuration depends on the machine and the applicable work context.

Work practices and safeguards

  • Do not operate a saw if a guard or other safety device is missing or not functioning properly. OSHA’s broader woodworking guidance emphasizes understanding machine controls and safety procedures.
  • Secure the workpiece and use the correct setup for the cut, as specified in the manual.
  • During crosscutting, OSHA’s guidance says to work from the handle side.
  • Measure against a stop gauge or turn the saw off before measuring; wait for the blade to stop before moving material or measuring.
  • Use eye and face protection as appropriate to the machine and work requirements.

OSHA’s technical material is not a substitute for the instructions for a particular saw. For workplace use, check the current rules that apply to the job and jurisdiction. The federal construction regulation 29 CFR 1926.304 includes provisions for radial saws, including upper-hood and lower-blade-guard requirements; it applies in its regulatory context, not as a complete consumer operating guide.

What blades and attachments can a radial arm saw use?

OSHA describes radial arm saws as versatile and notes that some configurations use shaping cutters, disks or drum sanders in place of a blade. That does not establish compatibility or safe use for every saw. Check the machine manual and the attachment’s own instructions before installing or using anything other than the specified blade.

For a replacement blade, verify the exact model’s requirements and the blade markings. Relevant checks include diameter, arbor, speed rating, tooth geometry, intended cutting task, guard compatibility and manufacturer approval. There is no universal blade fit established for radial arm saws.

What to check before buying a part or attachment

Start with the saw’s model information and manual. OSHA’s safety descriptions suggest that guards, return-device components, anti-kickback fingers, spreaders and shaping or sanding attachments may be relevant categories for particular machines, but they are not confirmed compatible parts for any specific model.

  1. Identify the saw’s exact make and model, then consult its manual for approved parts and operations.
  2. For blades, compare the required diameter, arbor, speed rating and tooth design with the blade’s markings and intended cut.
  3. For guards or other safety components, confirm that the part is designed for that model and does not interfere with required safeguards.
  4. For attachments, check both the saw manual and the attachment instructions for permitted use and setup.
  5. Use the manufacturer’s support channel if the documentation does not establish fit. DEWALT’s Product & Tool Support page directs users to manuals, repairs, replacement support and safety notices; it does not confirm parts availability for a particular radial arm saw.

Evaluate these points against the jobs the saw will perform, the space available and the safeguards required. A model’s stated capabilities alone do not establish that it is suitable for a particular task.
