Know which Samsung washer filter you have
The pump or debris filter catches material in the washer’s drain path. It is not the same as the water-supply mesh filter, which screens incoming water, or a top-load washer’s lint or drain filter. These filters may be in different locations and require different cleaning instructions.
Samsung US says its pump-filter procedure is for applicable front-load washers and that top-load washers do not have this pump filter. Other markets describe different arrangements, including lint or drain filters on some top-load models. Check the model-specific manual rather than applying front-load instructions to a different washer. Samsung’s US washer-cleaning instructions, Australian pump-filter guidance, and Latin American guidance reflect those regional and model differences.
How often to clean the pump filter
For applicable models, Samsung US recommends cleaning the pump filter at least monthly or approximately every 40 washes, whichever comes first. Samsung Australia advises owners of Australian models to clean it five to six times a year. These schedules differ, so use the recommendation in your local model manual rather than treating either cadence as universal.

What to prepare before opening the filter panel
- A towel and a container large enough to catch the water released from the emergency drain hose. Samsung gives an oil drain pan as an example.
- A small toothbrush or similar soft-bristle brush for cleaning the filter.
- Time for hot water to cool: after a Self Clean, Pure Cycle, or Sanitize cycle, Samsung US says to wait one hour before draining to avoid possible injury.
The emergency hose can release retained water, so set the towel and container in place before removing its cap. Samsung’s instructions do not require a specialty tool.
Clean the pump filter on an applicable front-load washer
- Let recently heated water cool. If the washer has just run Self Clean, Pure Cycle, or Sanitize, wait one hour before proceeding. Samsung warns that the water may be very hot.
- Find and open the access panel. Look for the pump-filter panel near the bottom of the washer. Its location can vary by model; consult the manual if it is not obvious.
- Set up for draining. Place a towel and a suitably large container beneath the emergency drain hose.
- Drain the washer. Hold the hose, twist off its cap, and let the water drain fully into the container.
- Remove the filter. Twist it counterclockwise. Some models require you to push the filter in while turning, like a medicine-bottle cap.
- Clean and inspect. Brush dirt and material from the filter with a small soft-bristle brush. Look inside the filter housing and check the drain-pump impeller for debris.
- Reinstall the parts. Insert the filter and turn it clockwise until secure and in the vertical position. Firmly replace the emergency hose cap, secure the hose in its mounting clip, and close the access panel.
If the panel, hose, or filter does not match these directions, stop and follow the washer’s user manual. Samsung’s Canadian instructions also note that washer models can differ.

If the washer is not draining or spinning
A clogged pump filter is one possible cause of poor drainage, and poor drainage can prevent a washer from moving into the spin step. Samsung explains that the washer attempts to drain before spinning; if it cannot drain, it does not proceed to spin. Cleaning the filter is a useful check on applicable front-load models, not a guaranteed fix. If the problem remains, follow Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance or contact support.
