Where chlorides make pitting or crevice corrosion a real concern, 316 generally resists those forms of attack better—but it is not immune to seawater, especially in warm, stagnant or tightly creviced installations. Choose by the exposure and assembly, not by the word “stainless” or “marine grade” alone.
How 304 and 316 stainless steel screws differ
The practical distinction is their resistance to localized corrosion. Grade 316 contains molybdenum and has better overall corrosion resistance than 304, particularly against chloride-related pitting and crevice corrosion, according to Atlas Steels’ 316, 316L and 316H data sheet compilation, revised August 2013.

The ASTM group listings identify alloys within a particular fastener specification; they do not establish that every screw type or installation is suitable. Grade is only one part of the selection.
What chloride exposure means for screw selection
Chlorides can promote pitting and crevice corrosion, and temperature affects susceptibility. The relevant exposure is not just whether a screw is outdoors: consider whether it encounters salt or other chlorides, whether moisture can remain trapped, and whether the assembly runs warm.

316 improves the odds relative to 304, but “marine grade” is not a promise of seawater immunity. Atlas Steels notes that 316 can corrode in seawater and identifies crevices and rough finish as contributing risks. In warm, stagnant, tightly creviced or genuinely marine conditions, do not assume that moving from 304 to 316 solves the problem; obtain materials guidance for the actual environment and assembly.
Atlas Steels’ July 2010 technical note gives indicative chloride guidance under particular water-temperature contexts. Those values are dated and context-dependent, not universal safe-use limits for screws. Chloride concentration, temperature, surface condition and assembly geometry all matter; a single threshold cannot certify a fastener for every installation. What ASTM F593-24 does—and does not—cover
ASTM F593-24, Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bolts, Hex Cap Screws, and Studs, covers those fasteners in nominal diameters from 0.25 to 1.50 inches inclusive for service applications requiring general corrosion resistance. It lists 304 in Group 1 and 316 in Group 2, both in the cold-worked condition. The stated diameter range and fastener forms are the scope of this standard, not a claim that every screw sold in either grade complies with it.
For nuts used with fasteners covered by F593, the standard identifies ASTM F594. Unless otherwise specified, it generally calls for nuts from the same alloy group and sets a proof-stress relationship. Check the applicable standard and project documents rather than assuming a matching grade name alone establishes compatibility.

How to choose a screw for a construction job
- Start with exposure. Identify chloride sources, expected temperature, wetting and drying, and whether water or contaminants can remain trapped. If the environment is warm, stagnant, creviced or marine, seek application-specific materials guidance rather than treating 316 as a universal fix.
- Specify the fastener form and dimensions. Confirm whether the job calls for a screw, bolt, hex cap screw, stud or another form, then establish diameter and length. Verify that the chosen product falls within the scope of any specification you intend to invoke.
- Match head and drive to the assembly. Select the required head shape and drive type for access, installation and the mating parts. A grade designation does not tell you these details.
- Check load and assembly requirements. Confirm the fastener’s strength and material condition are suitable for the design and service loads. Do not infer load capacity from “304” or “316” alone.
- Confirm the specification and documentation. Where ASTM F593 is required, verify the product is the covered fastener form and diameter and request documentation showing the applicable alloy group and condition. For other screw types or requirements, use the project’s applicable specification.
- Check mating hardware. Confirm nut or mating-part compatibility. For covered F593 fasteners, consult ASTM F594 and the project requirements for the nut selection.
Can a buyer identify 316 by appearance?
Appearance alone is not a dependable way to distinguish 304 from 316. Atlas Steels’ Technical Note No. 1, revised August 11, 2021, documents qualitative sorting methods, including molybdenum spot testing; such methods are screening approaches, not a substitute for material documentation when a specification or safety-critical application requires verified grade. Ask the supplier for traceable documentation appropriate to the job.
