Oregon State University researchers report that their clay-based, 3D-printable concrete alternative exceeds 17 megapascals (MPa) of strength three days after printing. That is a strength milestone, not full cure: the material takes eight to 10 days to fully cure and then exceeds 40 MPa. It remains a research material, not a product approved or established for construction projects.
What is the material?
The material was developed by researchers at Oregon State University (OSU). It is based mainly on clay soil, with hemp fibers, sand and biochar. An acrylamide-based binder triggers a process called frontal polymerization as the mixture is extruded from a 3D printer nozzle, helping the printed material gain strength quickly. OSU describes the process as enabling printing across unsupported gaps.
This is a research formulation, not a commercially available concrete mix identified by the university. Generic ingredients or a standard 3D printer are not shown to reproduce the experiment.
What does “hardens in 3 days” mean?
OSU reports these strength milestones for its material:

| Time after printing | Reported strength | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately | 3 MPa | Buildable strength, according to OSU. |
| Three days | More than 17 MPa | OSU characterizes this as the strength required of residential structural concrete. It does not establish code compliance or suitability for every structural use. |
| Eight to 10 days | More than 40 MPa | Strength after full curing, according to OSU. |
The three-day result therefore does not mean the material is fully cured. It describes an early strength milestone. OSU assistant professor of mechanical engineering Devin Roach said the reported buildable strength immediately after printing can enable multilayer walls and freestanding overhangs such as roofs. Those reported capabilities do not demonstrate that a completed house has been built or that a particular structure is safe.
OSU compares the three-day milestone with as long as 28 days for traditional cement-based concrete. The figures describe the university’s reported research result and comparison; they do not establish a like-for-like performance test across different mixes, curing conditions, specimen sizes or structural applications. OSU’s November 21, 2025 announcement provides the strength timeline and researcher’s account.

How does it compare with conventional concrete?
| Comparison point | OSU research material | Conventional cement-based concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients and binding approach | Clay soil, hemp fibers, sand and biochar, with a thermally triggered acrylamide-based binder. | Not specified in the OSU announcement for a particular mix. |
| Reported strength timeline | 3 MPa immediately after printing; more than 17 MPa after three days. | OSU says traditional cement-based concrete can take as long as 28 days to reach the comparable strength milestone; the announcement does not specify a particular mix or test conditions. |
| Full cure | Eight to 10 days, with strength exceeding 40 MPa, according to OSU. | Not stated in the OSU announcement for a particular mix. |
| Cost | Currently costs more than standard cement-based concrete, according to OSU. | Serves as the cost reference; no price is stated. |
| Construction readiness | ASTM standard tests and a report professional engineers can review are still needed before proposed construction use, according to OSU. | Not compared on a specific standard or application in the announcement. |
New Atlas also reported the same OSU research and noted that the material currently costs more than its conventional counterpart. Its November 25, 2025 coverage is secondary reporting; the university announcement is the source for the researchers’ measurements and development caveats.
Is it environmentally better?
OSU describes the material as environmentally friendly and gives about 8% as the share of global carbon dioxide emissions attributed to cement. That figure is background context, not a measured emissions reduction for this particular mixture. The announcement provides no quantified life-cycle assessment result, so the size of any environmental benefit cannot be stated from the available evidence.

Can it be used in a building project now?
OSU does not present the material as ready for construction projects. It says the mixture currently costs more than standard cement-based concrete and still needs ASTM standard tests plus a report professional engineers can review before it can be proposed for construction use. A fast strength gain alone does not establish building-code compliance, regulatory approval or safety for a finished building.
