The Superior Dowel Centerfinder is a shop-made jig for marking the center of a dowel’s end before drilling or chucking it in a lathe. Rest the dowel in the jig’s V-notches, hold a pencil against its end, and rotate the dowel: the pencil traces a circle centered on the dowel. The jig is not a commercial model with a published accuracy specification.
How the shop-made centerfinder works
V-notches support the dowel as it turns, while a pencil held in the jig’s pencil rest contacts the end face. Rotating the dowel carries the end past the pencil, leaving a circular mark around the center. Raising or lowering the pencil rest changes the mark, allowing the user to adjust the setup.
WOOD Magazine describes the jig as a way to locate the center of dowels of any size. Its contributor, Mark Ostrom of Lindstrom, Minnesota, wrote, “By raising or lowering the pencil rest, I can dial in dead center on any dowel, but I find a small circle adequate for drilling or chucking the dowel into my lathe.” Read the WOOD Magazine article. What the mark is—and what it does not establish
The jig leaves a circle on the dowel’s end face; it does not publish a measured center point or guarantee a particular tolerance. WOOD Magazine’s article text gives no construction dimensions, tolerance, or test results. Ostrom reports that a small circle is adequate for drilling or lathe chucking, but the best mark for a particular job depends on the work and setup.

Is Milescraft CenterFinder 8408 the same tool?
No. Milescraft’s CenterFinder, model 8408, is a commercial marking tool for board centerlines and offsets, rather than a jig for marking the end of a dowel. The manufacturer says it works on boards up to 2-1/2 inches (65 mm) thick and has a center hole for a pencil, offset notches, and an included pencil. See the Milescraft CenterFinder product page. It may suit general board layout, but it is not a direct substitute for the dowel-end centerfinder.
