ASTM’s Manual of Aggregate and Concrete Testing (R0030) is a supplemental reference for understanding aggregate and concrete sampling and testing—not a standard or a substitute for the test method and project specification that govern a job. ASTM lists the publication as a PDF. Its coverage ranges from laboratory practices and safety to named methods for aggregates and fresh and hardened concrete.

Where to get the manual PDF

ASTM’s R0030 catalog page identifies the Manual of Aggregate and Concrete Testing as PDF-only and describes it as an information-only manual, not an ASTM standard. The catalog result reviewed listed 39 pages; price and stock status can change, so check the page for current availability and cost.

The available R0030–19 text records revisions through 2019, but that does not establish that 2019 is the current edition. ASTM also lists a committee work item titled “Revision of R0030 Manual of Aggregate and Concrete Testing”; its listing gives the rationale as “Revisions to Manual of Testing to provide more information,” but does not establish that a replacement edition has been completed or published. Check the ASTM catalog for the edition currently offered before relying on an edition date.

What the manual covers

R0030 is intended to supplement ASTM methods for sampling and testing aggregates and freshly mixed and hardened portland-cement concrete. The manual discusses how testing work is organized and why reliable results depend on appropriate sampling, personnel, equipment, and procedure.

Among the methods referenced in the R0030–19 text are ASTM C29/C29M for unit weight and voids in aggregate; C31/C31M and C192/C192M for making and curing concrete specimens in the field and laboratory; C39/C39M for compressive strength of cylinders; C136 for aggregate sieve analysis; C172/C172M for sampling freshly mixed concrete; C143/C143M for slump; C173/C173M and C231/C231M for fresh-concrete air content; and D75/D75M for sampling aggregates. This list indicates the manual’s breadth, not a set of procedures reproduced here.

How to use it alongside standards and project documents

The manual’s introduction says, “The manual is not a part of the ASTM methods.” Use it as explanatory context. The operative test requirements come from the applicable ASTM method, the contract documents, and any governing jurisdictional requirements—not from R0030 alone.

  • Highly Practical On Site: Concrete slump cone test kit a stable hexagonal base plate, this set offers the perfect balance between portability and on-site functionality. The design prevents slipping or wobbling during the fill and lift process, ensuring stability for accurate slump measurements in various field conditions.
  1. Identify the material and test. Determine whether the work concerns aggregate, fresh concrete, or hardened concrete, and what property or condition must be measured.
  2. Check the project requirements. Find the specification, sampling requirements, acceptance criteria, and any specified ASTM method edition in the contract documents.
  3. Use the specified method text. Obtain and follow the applicable method edition; do not infer procedural steps from a manual’s topic list.
  4. Apply the manual as a supplement. Use R0030 to understand broader testing practice, laboratory considerations, and the role of correct procedure.

R0030–19 notes that specifications may identify a particular year or edition of a method. The edition required by the contract may therefore differ from the newest edition available in a catalog. Resolve that question from the governing project documents rather than assuming “latest” automatically applies.

Why sampling and procedure affect test interpretation

The manual’s introduction warns: “Improper use of test procedures can result in inaccurate data and mistaken conclusions about aggregate and concrete quality.” A result is meaningful only in the context of the sample collected, its preparation and handling, the method followed, and the project’s acceptance criteria. A test result by itself does not establish overall material quality or compliance.

R0030’s safety statement does not address every safety concern. It places responsibility on users to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine which regulations apply. The manual should not be treated as a substitute for site-specific hazard controls, employer procedures, or applicable safety regulations.

Choosing related testing equipment

The manual’s reference to aggregate sieve analysis makes test sieves a relevant equipment category, but it does not endorse a particular product. Before selecting sieves, check the sieve designation and applicable requirements in the governing ASTM method and project documents. A product listing alone does not establish conformance.
