Planting a tree together can mark an anniversary, a shared home, or a remembrance—but its survival depends on choosing a suitable site, planting it properly, and agreeing on who will care for it. Treat the tree as a living symbol of commitment, not a guarantee of permanence.
What tree should we plant together?
Choose the site before choosing a species. A tree that suits your climate and has room to grow is a better choice than one selected only for its flowers, appearance, or symbolism. The right species depends on your location and the conditions where it will be planted; there is no universally best tree.
- Growing space: Check the tree’s mature height and spread against nearby buildings, paths, fences, and overhead utilities.
- Site conditions: Consider sunlight, soil quality and compaction, drainage, and access to water.
- Purpose: Decide whether you want shade, flowers, privacy, seasonal color, or another benefit. Compare evergreen and deciduous trees in light of that goal.
- Long-term care: Choose a tree whose water and maintenance needs can be met by the people or organization responsible for it.
Native trees may be a good option, but native does not automatically mean suitable for every residential or urban site. Ask a local extension service, forestry agency, or nursery for recommendations adapted to your area. Oregon State University Extension’s planting and care advice is specific to Oregon; it should not be treated as a universal guide. How do we plant a tree for an anniversary?
Make the planting part of the occasion, but make the site and care plan part of the decision. Before buying a tree, confirm that the location can support its mature size and that someone will be available to water and maintain it as it establishes.

- Agree on responsibility. Decide who will water, check the tree, maintain mulch, and arrange any needed pruning or winter protection.
- Plant according to the tree stock and local guidance. Keep the root flare visible and avoid planting too deeply. Texas A&M Forest Service recommends a planting hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball for the types of trees covered in its guidance. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources advises placing the trunk flare about 1–2 inches above grade. Follow the guidance appropriate to your tree and region rather than treating either measurement as a universal rule. - Water thoroughly after planting. Continue checking soil moisture and adjust care as the tree establishes.
Planting too deeply, improper watering, and girdling roots are among the problems Texas A&M Forest Service identifies as causes of poor establishment or tree death. Handle roots carefully and follow instructions for the stock type you purchase.
How do you care for a newly planted tree?
Water according to the site
Newly planted trees need consistent attention to moisture while their roots establish. Check the soil and adapt watering to the species, tree size, soil, drainage, weather, and local recommendations. Do not assume a native or drought-tolerant tree needs no supplemental water during establishment.

Watering recommendations vary by region. Oregon State University Extension gives Oregon gardeners a rule of thumb equivalent to 1 inch of rainfall per week from June through September; that is general Oregon guidance, not a schedule for other climates. Oregon State University Extension
A watering bag or leaky bucket can help deliver water to a young tree, but it is an aid, not a complete care plan. Iowa State University Extension emphasizes watering the soil around the original root ball. Check moisture and make sure surrounding soil is included in your watering. Mulch can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep it away from the trunk rather than mounding it against the stem. Follow local recommendations on mulch material and application.
Plan for ongoing work
Establishment care is more than the planting-day task. Decide in advance who will handle supplemental watering, mulch, winter protection where needed, and pruning. University of Illinois Extension recommends planning for these responsibilities and ensuring that any memorial planting funds can support them. Can you plant a memorial tree in a community space?
Possibly, but first contact the municipality, land manager, or community tree committee responsible for the site. Work with them on permission, suitable species and location, and who will provide ongoing care. The process and requirements depend on the organization and place; do not assume that public land is available for an individual planting.
A community planting project or grove can be an alternative when private space is unavailable or a couple may move. It can offer local expertise, but a public tree still needs support and maintenance. Agree on the care arrangement before planting rather than assuming the organization will provide every task. What does “lasts forever” mean for a living tree?
A tree can carry a lasting meaning without being literally permanent. As University of Illinois Extension puts it, “Trees are living organisms, not permanent monuments.” Weather, pests, disease, and changing circumstances can affect a tree even when it receives good care. University of Illinois Extension
If the planting is on private property, discuss what happens if you move and who will take over care. Leaving a tree behind can be emotionally difficult; a community project or grove may be worth considering if it better fits your circumstances. The meaningful commitment is the planting and stewardship, not a promise that the tree will outlast every change.
