A Gardener’s Guide to Winter Warm Spells: What to Do When Plants Start Growing Early

Warm winter weather does not mean every plant has left dormancy. Learn how to assess early growth and respond to pruning, mulch, watering, containers, and freeze risk.

A warm winter day does not mean your garden has switched to spring. Some plants may begin to swell or emerge after a warm spell, but dormancy and cold hardiness depend on seasonal cues, accumulated chilling, plant type, health, and the temperature around the plant. The practical risk is that tender new growth can be damaged by a later freeze—not that every plant will wake up or be harmed.

The guidance below draws on Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado Extension sources. Recommendations vary with climate, species and cultivar, exposure, soil and snow conditions, and forecast; consult your local extension service for advice tailored to your area.

Why a warm spell can—and may not—change a plant

Plants respond to more than a single afternoon’s air temperature. Shorter days and seasonal temperatures help prepare plants for winter, while accumulated cold helps determine when some buds can resume development. Species, cultivar, dormancy stage, plant health, and local exposure all affect the response.

University of Minnesota Extension says tree and shrub buds generally overcome dormancy after exposure to temperatures from 24°F to 50°F for approximately four to eight weeks. That is a broad description, not a universal trigger: the required duration varies by species and by how long temperatures remain low. Once a plant has met its chilling requirement, warmer conditions can move it toward bud swell and growth. Illinois Extension notes that fruit-crop chilling requirements also vary by species and cultivar.

A south-facing wall or other sheltered spot can warm sooner than an exposed part of the same garden. A plant growing there may respond differently from the same species nearby. Drought, disease, or other stress can also make recovery harder.

What a later freeze can do

As buds develop and new shoots or flowers emerge, their cold tolerance generally decreases. A freeze after early growth can injure tender tissue. Established, healthy plants may recover or grow again, but damage to fruit blossoms can reduce or eliminate that season’s crop without killing the tree.

For perspective on how much needs vary, Illinois Extension gives example chilling-hour ranges of 800 to 1,750 for apples and 375 to 1,200 for peaches. These are examples, not a planting prescription or a guarantee for any particular cultivar or location.

What to do in the garden during a warm spell

Check buds before pruning or cleaning up

Look for swollen or opening buds before starting winter pruning. Minnesota Extension advises delaying pruning when a tree or shrub has begun to emerge. Avoid treating a warm day as a signal to remove all leaf litter and dead stems: some overwintering insects use garden debris. Follow local guidance where pest or disease concerns call for cleanup.

Mulch cold-winter perennial and bulb beds at the right time

In Minnesota guidance, protective mulch moderates temperature swings and can reduce premature emergence and freeze-thaw heaving. Apply it after the soil begins to freeze, not as part of early-fall cleanup. The Extension recommends five or six inches of whole or shredded leaves, partially decomposed compost, ground corn stalks, or straw. As soil thaws in early spring, remove the protective layer to help avoid crown rot and fungal problems. Timing and depth should be adapted to local conditions.

Water only when the soil and weather allow

Do not water frozen soil. Minnesota Extension advises starting once the ground is completely thawed, especially during drought. Colorado State University Extension offers more specific guidance for its region: during prolonged dry periods, water when both air and soil temperatures are above 40°F and there is no snow cover. It suggests watering around midday so moisture can soak in before a nighttime freeze, and gives roughly once or twice monthly during extended dry periods without snow cover, adjusted for precipitation. These are regional conditions, not a single schedule for every garden.

Give container plants separate attention

Container soil is more exposed to temperature swings than soil in the ground. Illinois Extension says the goals for overwintered container plants are to prevent the soil from freezing and maintain moisture, particularly for evergreens. For northern Illinois, it recommends a large soil mass in an insulated container placed in a protected spot. Repeated freezing and thawing can damage many containers; choose a sheltered arrangement suited to your climate and container.

Use covers selectively, not as a freeze-proof guarantee

Illinois Extension says covers are usually unnecessary for early-emerging spring perennials and bulbs that tolerate temperatures into the upper 20s°F, and often are not effective below 28°F. Large ornamental and fruit trees are generally too large to protect with this approach. A cover should not be treated as assurance against a severe freeze.

Keep a local record to guide future choices

Record the plant and cultivar if known, its exposure, the date, its bud stage, and any injury after a warm spell or freeze. Minnesota Extension recommends keeping records because plants can respond differently across species and microclimates. Over time, those observations can help you choose plants better suited to your site and interpret what happened in your own garden.

Where to get region-specific guidance

The temperature thresholds and seasonal practices above come from Extension services in Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado. For local timing and plant-specific recommendations, check with your state or county Extension service, particularly if you are deciding whether to prune, water, mulch, or protect a plant ahead of a forecast freeze.
