How to Identify and Get Rid of Carpet Beetles

Carpet beetle larvae cause most textile damage. Confirm the insect, find its food source, clean thoroughly, and store vulnerable items securely.

Carpet beetle larvae—not the adults you may see at a window—are usually responsible for damage to wool, fur, feathers, and other animal-derived materials. To deal with them, confirm the insect, find what the larvae are feeding on, remove that source, and clean the affected area thoroughly. An isolated adult sighting alone does not prove you have a widespread infestation.

How to tell whether you have carpet beetles

Carpet beetles are dermestid beetles, and their appearance varies by species. Adults are small and oval, often dark or mottled; larvae are hairy or bristly. Look for irregular holes in susceptible materials, shed larval skins, and small fecal pellets. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes shed skins and pellets as signs that larvae have been feeding (EPA, IPM for Schools).

Adults may turn up at windows, while larvae can wander away from their food before pupating. Finding an insect on a particular item therefore does not prove that the item is the source. Carpet beetles can also be mistaken for bed bugs; if you cannot identify the insect confidently, save a specimen or clear photograph and ask a cooperative extension agent or another qualified pest expert to identify it (EPA, bed bugs).

Where to look for the source

Begin near the damage, then search places where animal-derived material, lint, hair, or other organic debris can collect. Inspect more than the visible carpet: larvae may be feeding in a hidden location or wandering through the room.

  • Carpet edges, carpet pads, rugs, and the areas under furniture; check dark gaps beneath slipcovers as well.
  • Closets and stored wool, fur, feather-filled items, blankets, felt, and garments.
  • Cracks, baseboards, vents or ducts, and spaces beneath rarely moved furniture where lint, hair, and debris accumulate.
  • Stored animal specimens, feathers, leather, horn goods, and insect collections.
  • Bags or boxes of dry pet food, fish meal, and similar stored goods that may be susceptible to infestation.
  • Concealed animal nests or carcasses near the building if the visible signs do not explain the activity.

Carpet beetle larvae feed on animal-derived materials, and some related beetles can infest dry stored foods. The EPA’s school-focused integrated pest management manual discusses their damage and the possibility that larvae are found away from their food source (EPA, IPM for Schools).

How to get rid of carpet beetles

Work through these steps in order. Removing the food source and cleaning the places where debris collects are more useful starting points than treating a room based on one sighting.

Carpet Beetle Killer Indoor Spray - Plant-Based Carpet Beetle Spray, Pet & Family Friendly Formula, Fabric Safe Treatment for Rugs, Furniture, Closets & Car, 16 oz
  • KILLS CARPET BEETLES AT EVERY LIFE STAGE - This carpet beetle killer indoor spray kills carpet beetles on contact, taking out the adults you see, the larvae doing the real damage in your rugs and fabrics, and the eggs most treatments leave behind. Spray it straight onto carpet edges, rug backing, closet corners, and the hidden zones where larvae feed, hitting the full lifecycle instead of just the beetles out in the open.
  • NO HARSH CHEMICAL SMELL, DRIES CLEAN — Made with plant oils like geraniol, cottonseed oil, and cinnamon oil, this carpet beetle spray goes on with virtually no odor instead of a harsh solvent smell, then dries down clean with no oily film or sticky residue. A cleaner alternative to the conventional sprays that leave a room full of chemical fumes.
  • PLANT-BASED FORMULA, MADE WITH KIDS & PETS IN MIND - Built on plant-derived essential oils, without the boric acid, synthetic pyrethroids, or artificial fragrances found in conventional powders and sprays. Designed for use around children and pets when used as directed, so you can treat the carpets, closets, and bedrooms where your family lives.
  • WORKS INDOORS, OUTDOORS, AND IN THE CAR - This carpet bug killer is non-staining and residue-free on water-safe surfaces, so you can treat rugs, carpets, upholstery, drapes, baseboards, closet shelves, mattress seams, and car interiors without marks or sticky film. Go after carpet beetles wherever they hide, from bedrooms and living rooms to closets, garages, entry points, and vehicles, indoors or out.
  • SPRAY, DRY, DONE, SIMPLE CARPET BEETLE CONTROL - No mixing and no prep. Just shake, hold the bottle 8 to 12 inches from the surface, and spray directly where carpet beetles hide and breed, from carpet edges and furniture seams to closet shelves and along baseboards. It kills on contact on the spot, then let treated areas dry before normal use. Reapply every few days while an infestation is active until you stop seeing them.
  1. Confirm the insect. Capture a sample or take a clear photograph. If identification is uncertain, seek qualified help before buying pest-specific treatments; carpet beetles can be confused with bed bugs (EPA, bed bugs).
  2. Find and remove the source. Check susceptible textiles, carpet edges and pads, stored goods, and debris-holding areas. Remove accessible abandoned nests or animal remains safely.
  3. Clean affected items and rooms. Follow each textile’s care label; use appropriate washing or dry cleaning, and discard items that are too damaged to keep. Vacuum cracks, baseboards, closets, under furniture, and other places where debris collects. Promptly dispose of vacuum contents.
  4. Store cleaned vulnerable items securely. Put clean susceptible textiles in tightly sealed containers or heavy-duty plastic bags. This helps protect stored items; it does not kill beetles or resolve an active infestation by itself.
  5. Inspect again. Recheck likely sources and debris-holding areas so you can find anything missed or newly exposed. If activity persists, the source is inaccessible, or valuable materials are at risk, consult a pest-management professional.

The EPA’s IPM for Schools manual emphasizes cleaning and sealed storage and says, “There is rarely a need to use an insecticide to control clothes moths or carpet beetles.” That guidance comes from a school-focused manual, not a guarantee that every household situation can be resolved without professional treatment (EPA, IPM for Schools).

When to consider pesticides or professional help

Consider professional identification or pest management if you cannot confirm what the insect is, cannot reach the likely source, activity continues after thorough source removal and cleaning, or valuable textiles and collections are involved. The relevant decision is whether the source is known, whether activity is limited or persistent, and whether treatment could damage the material you are trying to protect.

If you use a pesticide, follow the current label for that specific product and site. Do not assume a product can be applied to carpets, clothing, or other surfaces because another product’s label allows it. An EPA label from 2003 is a historical example of site-specific directions and a carpet restriction—not current treatment advice (EPA label, 2003).

Do carpet beetles bite?

Carpet beetles are not bed bugs, and they do not feed on people. Do not identify an infestation from skin irritation or suspected bites alone: confirm the insect itself or ask a qualified expert to identify a saved specimen or photograph (EPA, bed bugs).

How to prevent damage to textiles

After cleaning vulnerable items, keep them in tightly sealed containers or heavy-duty plastic bags, and periodically inspect stored materials and likely debris-collecting areas. The EPA manual says cedar products cannot be relied on for adequate protection, so do not treat cedar as a substitute for cleaning and secure storage (EPA, IPM for Schools).
