9 Common Energy Vampires That May Be Adding to Your Electric Bill

Standby power is real, but not every plugged-in device is a costly drain. Here are nine places to check and practical ways to measure and reduce standby use safely.

An energy vampire is a device that uses electricity while it appears to be off or is sitting in standby. TVs, computers, chargers and other electronics can draw this standby power, but the amount varies by device; being plugged in does not automatically make something a costly drain. For a bigger bill, heating, cooling, water heating, lighting and refrigeration may matter more than any single standby device.

What counts as an energy vampire?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes standby power as electricity used by devices that appear to be turned off. Its standby-power guidance also explains that the IEC 62301 procedure measures standby consumption. This is different from equipment actively doing its job: a refrigerator running to keep food cold or a heating system conditioning a home is using electricity, but that is not standby power.

The nine categories below are practical places to look, not a ranked list. DOE identifies several as possible sources of vampire loads, but it does not establish a universal top nine or say every model draws a significant amount.

9 common places to check for standby power

  1. Televisions and home-theater equipment

A television or connected theater component may draw power while waiting for a remote command, maintaining settings or staying ready to turn on. The actual standby draw depends on the equipment.

    • 【Estimate Your Energy Bill】 Enhance energy management by integrating with billing systems for clear cost visualization (both single and periodic readings). Additionally, programmable scheduling allows automatic operation of high-consumption devices during off-peak hours with lower electricity rates, resulting in cost savings.
    • 【Smart Charging for Devices】Automatically cuts power once your device reaches the low-battery limit you set, preventing overcharging.
    • 【Auto-Shutoff】Prevents electrical overload by automatically shutting off devices that use too much power.
    • 【Voice & Remote Control】 With built-in support for both Alexa and Google Assistant, issue simple voice commands to adjust settings, turn devices on or off, or even access specific functions without lifting a finger. Manage Tapo P115 and its connected devices from anywhere with the user-friendly Tapo app.
  2. Set-top boxes and streaming devices

Boxes and streaming hardware may remain ready for a signal or update rather than fully powering down. Check whether the device has a true off setting and whether turning it off would interrupt a service or feature you rely on.

  3. Game consoles

A console in a low-power or quick-start mode may remain available for remote wake-up or background tasks. Compare the convenience of that mode with the option to shut down completely when the console is not in use.

  4. Computers and monitors

Desktop computers and monitors can use power in sleep or standby modes. Sleep is not the same as unplugged, though the draw and usefulness of leaving equipment ready vary by setup.

    • 【Overcharge Prevention & Power Management】 Automatically cuts off power based on user-set thresholds and durations to prevent overcharging, conserve energy, and protect connected devices from overcurrents by shutting off when power exceeds set limits.
    • 【Voice & Remote Control】 With built-in support for both Alexa and Google Assistant, issue simple voice commands to adjust settings, turn devices on or off, or even access specific functions without lifting a finger. Manage Tapo P110M and its connected devices from anywhere with the user-friendly Tapo app.
  5. Printers and other peripherals

Printers and connected accessories may keep a display, network connection or wake function active. If they are used only occasionally, check whether their standby mode can be disabled safely or whether a switched strip is suitable.

  6. Chargers and docks

DOE’s EnergySavers guide recommends unplugging chargers when they are not in use. Whether a particular charger has a meaningful standby draw is not established by its being plugged in alone; avoid the daily hassle if measurement shows the load is negligible.

  7. Stereos and other audio equipment

Receivers, speakers and audio components may stay ready for a remote, network command or connected source. DOE includes stereos among examples of possible vampire loads, not as a claim that every stereo is a major drain.

  8. Kitchen appliances with clocks or displays

Some kitchen appliances keep a clock, display or control circuit powered between uses. DOE lists kitchen appliances as possible sources of vampire power. Do not unplug an appliance if doing so would affect a required setting, safety feature or food storage.

  9. Network equipment and other always-on electronics

Routers, hubs and similar equipment are often deliberately left on because a household needs a continuous connection. Their consumption is ongoing use, not necessarily a device “off” in standby. Treat them as candidates to measure, and do not switch off equipment needed for internet, security or other essential functions.

Standby loads are only one part of household electricity use

A DOE 2022 Energy Saver guide reproduces an Energy Information Administration (EIA) chart of U.S. residential electricity use per household in 2016. Those historical estimates cover total end uses, not standby power isolated from active use:

Other uses 3.5 thousand kWh per household — Energy Information Administration, 2016 (reproduced in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2022 guide)

These figures are not current estimates for an individual home and cannot tell you how much of a bill comes from phantom power. DOE says appliances account for about 15% of household energy consumption; that broader figure is not a standby-load estimate. DOE’s energy-efficiency guidance addresses appliances and other ways to reduce energy use, while ENERGY STAR notes that heating and cooling consume more energy than any other appliance in the home.

How to find and reduce standby loads safely

  1. Identify what can actually be switched off

Look for electronics that are not needed continuously, such as a group of TV accessories or a printer used occasionally. Keep equipment powered if it must maintain a safety function, food storage, security monitoring, network access or a setting you depend on.

  2. Group suitable devices on a switched strip

DOE recommends power strips as a way to avoid vampire loads. Connect only devices that can safely lose power together, then switch the strip off when the group is not needed. A smart plug or smart power strip can add scheduled or remote control where useful; ENERGY STAR’s home energy management criteria include plug-load monitoring or control as a system capability. That does not mean every smart plug or strip is ENERGY STAR certified.

Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
    • 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
    • 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Kasa App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.
  3. Unplug chargers when convenient

Unplug a charger when it is not being used if that is practical. DOE’s older guide suggests unplugging chargers when fully charged or idle, but the likely benefit depends on the charger’s measured draw and how often it is left connected.

  4. Measure before ranking suspects

If you want to know whether a device is worth changing, measure its power in the relevant mode with an appropriate electricity meter, or ask a qualified energy professional. DOE describes a standby measurement procedure, but does not endorse a particular consumer meter. A device’s plugged-in status alone is not enough to estimate its cost.

  5. Investigate large uses separately

If the bill remains high, review heating and cooling settings, air sealing, insulation, lighting, water heating and appliance efficiency. ENERGY STAR’s smart home energy tips discuss smart thermostats and other home energy measures. These actions address broader energy use, not standby power specifically; results depend on the home, equipment, climate, energy rate and behavior.
