An old garden hose can still be useful even when it no longer works reliably for watering. Depending on its condition, turn it into a simple soaker line, garden edging, a tool cover, or a protective sleeve. Use only sound sections for projects that need to hold their shape, and check local disposal rules for hose that is too damaged to reuse.
Choose a project that matches the hose
These ideas suit different jobs: some use a long length, while others need only a short section. The sources describe possible projects, not controlled tests, so treat DIY results—especially watering performance—as unverified.

Ideas for longer hose sections
1. Make a DIY soaker hose
A soaker hose is perforated tubing that gently irrigates gardens or planted areas, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For a simple adaptation, make evenly spaced holes along a suitable hose, cap one end, and connect the other to the spigot. This is a DIY reuse, not a tested irrigation product: the cited sources do not establish consistent flow or quantify water savings.
2. Build garden edging
Garden Gate describes an edging project assembled from old hoses, conduit, fiberglass stakes, and cable ties. Its instructions recommend leaving the hose in the sun for several hours to soften it before assembly. The example uses 10 hose lengths, each 108 inches long, to make a design about 10 inches tall and 8 feet long; those measurements describe that project, not a universal requirement. 3. Weave a doormat
A long hose can be woven into a doormat, an idea listed by Gardening Know How. The source presents this as a reuse possibility rather than tested construction instructions, so plan the weave and fastening method to suit the hose you have.
4. Make an outdoor area rug
Gardening Know How also suggests an area rug, including one placed around a pool. That suggestion does not establish slip resistance or suitability for wet walking surfaces. Do not treat a hose rug as a safety-rated mat.

Ideas for short hose pieces
5. Cover a blade for storage
Cut a hose section to the length of an axe, hatchet, saw, or similar blade, then slit the hose lengthwise so it can fit over the blade. Ontario County Recycles lists this as a reuse for old hose. The cover is for storage; it does not replace careful tool handling.
6. Cushion a handle or rope
Slide a hose section over a metal bucket handle to make the grip more comfortable, or over a tree-support rope to reduce direct rubbing. University of Florida IFAS Extension also describes using hose to replace a broken bucket handle. The UF/IFAS handout additionally suggests a hose mending kit for repairing a leak if you still want the hose to carry water.

7. Use a short section as a doorstop
Cut a short piece and wedge it beneath an open door. It is a simple option when the hose section fits securely; a piece that slides or rolls away will not hold the door reliably.
8. Make a tool-hanging loop
Ontario County Recycles describes forming a loop large enough to hold a rake, shovel, or broom handle, then fastening the hose to a wall. Size the loop for the tool and secure the attachment to a suitable wall surface.

9. Protect a plant or tree
Thread a hose segment over tree-stabilizing rope where it contacts a trunk, helping prevent the rope from cutting into the tree. A short section can also serve as a sleeve where a lawn tool might rub against a stem. These uses are described by Munson Waste and Gardening Know How.

Do not rely on cracked, brittle, contaminated, or sharp-edged material for a job where failure could cause injury. Choose intact sections when a project depends on the hose holding its shape. If the hose is no longer suitable for reuse, check your local waste authority for disposal instructions. Municipal and county recycling guidance warns that hoses can tangle in sorting equipment, so they should not go in the household recycling stream covered by that guidance.
