The space is believed to have been associated with Davyhulme Hall, the manor house once on the estate, but its exact age and original use have not been independently established.
How a suspected drain collapse led to the cellar
Deputy head greenkeeper Steve Hopkins spotted a hole while walking back to the club’s greenkeeping facilities. Staff initially thought a drain had collapsed. As Hopkins and colleagues investigated with a small digger, they uncovered a doorway into a brick-built underground space.
Hopkins entered crouching with a torch and described a vaulted room. He reported seeing bottles among the debris and said another entrance was blocked by rubble. The discovery was beneath the 13th tee area, which is associated with the course name “the Cellars.”
“At the time we just thought it was a collapsed drain,” Hopkins recalled, according to The Guardian’s account of the discovery.

What was found inside
The Guardian described dozens of empty, blackened glass bottles as wine and port bottles. BBC reporting says their shapes varied and that Hopkins thought they looked hand-blown; that is his visual impression, not a specialist assessment. The accounts do not establish the bottles’ labels, brands, precise ages, or contents before they were emptied.
Club professional Martyn Hamer separately estimated that there were around 100 bottles, as reported by The Independent. That figure is an attributed estimate, not a reconciled inventory; the more general description in the Guardian is “dozens.”

Why the cellar is linked to Davyhulme Hall
The club described the find as “what appears to be an old cellar, believed to date back to the original manor house,” in an announcement quoted by the Guardian. The likely connection is to Davyhulme Hall, the manor house that once stood on the site. The cellar’s brickwork and location provide context for that identification, but the reporting does not describe an archaeological examination that independently dates the structure or confirms precisely what it was used for.
The Guardian reports that Davyhulme Hall dated from the 12th century, during the reign of Henry II, and was associated with the medieval knight John de Hulme. Robert Henry Norreys inherited the estate in 1844. After Norreys died in 1887 and no buyer emerged for the hall, it was demolished in 1888. Davyhulme Golf Club formed in 1911 and later acquired land from the estate. Those dates trace the history of the hall and club; they do not date the cellar itself.

Hopkins also told the Guardian, “I am the first person to go in that room for over 100 years.” This is his recollection, not a separately verified record of the cellar’s last entry.

The Guardian reported that the entrance was sealed while the club considered what to do, and that the bottles had been removed for safekeeping. Some members reportedly suggested making the cellar a feature of the course. The Independent reported an intention to display the bottles in the clubhouse, but that report does not establish that a display was completed.
