Why single-ply does not automatically mean uncomfortable
Ply describes the number of paper layers, not the full experience. Softness, dry and wet strength, absorbency, and how readily paper breaks up in water can vary between products. In its testing of more than 25 toilet rolls, Which? assessed comfort as well as performance; it reported that the most absorbent roll held four times as much water as the weakest, while the strongest roll took more than twice the force to tear as the weakest. The results do not identify any of the products in this comparison as the softest or strongest, so they should not be read as a ranking of Scott, Marcal, or Charmin. For a durability-focused option, Charmin’s “Strong 1-ply” label makes Essential Strong a relevant product to compare in person, but it is a manufacturer description rather than a comparative test result.
How to compare value fairly
Cost per roll can mislead when rolls contain different numbers of sheets. Scott 1000 and Marcal Pro 1001 each specify 1,000 sheets per roll, which makes a basic sheet-count comparison straightforward. For a shelf-price comparison, calculate:

Price per 100 sheets = roll price ÷ sheets per roll × 100
For a multi-roll pack, divide the pack price by the total stated sheets across all rolls, then multiply by 100. That gives price per 100 sheets, but not necessarily cost per use: a person may use more sheets of a thinner or less absorbent paper. Comfort, strength, and absorbency affect the number of sheets someone reaches for, so consider those factors as well as the arithmetic.

- Check the exact sheet count and roll count on the package; do not assume that a larger-looking roll has more paper.
- Compare the same pack size and price basis, and account for discounts only if they apply to the purchase you are making.
- Look for package changes when comparing older prices or listings. Consumer Reports’ 2025 buying guide reported that Angel Soft Mega Rolls changed from 429 to 320 sheets, a reduction of more than 25%. Recycled single-ply options
Marcal Pro 1001
Marcal is the clearest recycled-content alternative in this household comparison. Its January 2025 specification sheet lists 1-ply construction, 1,000 sheets, and Green Seal certification for 100% recycled material. This gives buyers a documented recycled-content and certification reference alongside Scott’s sheet-count specification.
Commercial and high-capacity products
Tork OptiServe Coreless and Cascades PRO Select are designed for commercial dispensing and should not be treated as direct household-roll equivalents. Their published formats and fiber claims can be useful for facilities choosing paper by capacity and dispenser compatibility.

What septic-safe and flushability claims establish
Scott describes Scott 1000 as septic-safe and fast-dissolving, while Tork says its product breaks up rapidly and is suitable for all plumbing systems. Those statements are attributable to the manufacturers; they are not independent findings in the cited material. The same distinction applies to Lavex’s septic-safe positioning. If a plumbing system has specific requirements, follow its manufacturer or service professional’s guidance and avoid treating a product label as a guarantee for every system or use condition.
