Wood chips can define garden paths, unify planting beds, and protect the soil around trees and shrubs. For most tree and shrub beds, extension guidance points to a roughly 2–4-inch surface layer, adjusted for soil and drainage; keep chips at least six inches from tree trunks and never mix them into the soil.
Eight ways to use wood chips in a landscape
1. Make a path between garden beds
A wood-chip path creates a practical surface between planting areas and can help suppress weeds. Expect to replenish chips where foot traffic thins the layer. Oregon State Extension describes surface use on paths as an appropriate way to use chips: Wood chips for mulch?
2. Create a broad mulch bed beneath a tree
Extend the bed over part of the tree’s root zone rather than stopping at a small circle around the trunk. A mulched area also separates roots from lawn equipment and reduces the need to mow close to the tree. Keep the chips away from the trunk.
3. Shape a simple tree ring
A defined ring makes a clear transition from lawn to tree planting and is easy to maintain as a distinct landscape feature. Keep the bed broad enough to be useful, and leave the required trunk clearance rather than piling chips against the bark.

4. Group trees or woody plants in a shared bed
A continuous bed can visually connect several trees or shrubs. It also reduces grass competition and the need for mowing or trimming close to their roots. The shared bed can be edged formally or allowed to blend into a larger planting area.
5. Mulch a shrub border
Wood chips are suitable as a surface mulch around shrubs. Set the depth according to soil drainage and texture, and measure the existing layer before adding more; topping up blindly can leave a bed too deep.
6. Use chips in a rose bed
Iowa State University Extension includes roses among the landscape plantings that can be mulched with wood chips. Keep chips on the soil surface and clear of plant stems.

7. Mulch established perennial beds
Coarse chips can be used around established perennials. Leave crowns uncovered, and consider a different surface or a thinner, easily moved layer in sections where you frequently plant or transplant.

A chip lane can lead between planting zones or link a seating area to a garden bed. It uses the same practical approach as a garden path, but lets the route read as part of a naturalistic landscape rather than as a formal walkway.
Choose the right depth for the site
There is no single depth that suits every bed. Iowa State recommends 3–4 inches of wood chips on well-drained sites around trees and shrubs, or 2–3 inches on heavy soils. Oregon State recommends 3–4 inches for wood chips or ground wood waste in shrub and tree beds. Colorado State identifies about four inches as a general depth for weed suppression. These are extension recommendations, not a guarantee for every soil or planting.

Before adding chips, check how much mulch is already there. Oregon State’s guidance for woody ornamentals specifically advises checking existing depth before reapplying: Mulching woody ornamentals with organic materials.

Leave at least six inches between wood chips and tree trunks. Shape the layer so it tapers down toward the trunk instead of forming a mound, often called a “mulch volcano.” Iowa State and Colorado State both give the six-inch clearance guidance. Deep, wet mulch against bark can create conditions that contribute to decay or disease; excessive depth can also reduce soil oxygen or contribute to waterlogging.
For perennials, keep chips off the crown—the point where stems emerge from the plant. A surface layer should protect the soil without burying the plant’s growing point.

Use wood chips as a surface mulch, not a soil amendment
Spread chips on top of the soil rather than digging or tilling them in. Oregon State Extension explains that incorporating chips increases the potential for nitrogen to be tied up, particularly with smaller particles. Surface use on paths or around plants avoids that greater risk.
Fresh arborist chips can be used around trees and shrubs when left on the surface, according to University of Maryland Extension. That guidance does not recommend them around annuals and vegetables: Mulching Trees and Shrubs.
Check the source and composition
Ask what the chips are made from. Local arborists, municipal facilities, and waste sites may offer chips, sometimes at no cost, but the material can vary. Iowa State cautions that some commercial products made from shredded lumber or pallets may contain chemicals and can be inferior to chips made from tree and shrub trimmings. Washington State University Extension also discusses sourcing and concerns with some lumber- or pallet-derived products: Using Arborist Wood Chips as a Landscape Mulch.

For a landscape bed or path, look for chips with a clearly described natural tree-and-shrub source rather than assuming that every product labeled “wood mulch” has the same composition. Iowa State’s overview covers suitable landscape uses, application, and sourcing: Using Mulch in the Garden.
Quick Recap
Match the design to the job
- For a walkway: use chips as a surface path and plan to replenish high-traffic sections.
- For trees and shrubs: choose a surface layer depth based on drainage, soil texture, and the existing mulch; maintain trunk clearance.
- For a formal look: edge individual rings or beds clearly.
- For a naturalistic look: connect beds with a broader, gently shaped chip lane or shared planting bed.
- For sourcing: ask whether chips come from tree and shrub trimmings or from processed lumber or pallets.
