Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A gas fireplace pilot that will not light, goes out when you release the control, or shuts down later can point to different issues—and the symptom alone does not prove a thermocouple has failed. Start with the fireplace’s make and model, follow only its owner manual’s lighting procedure, and stop if that procedure does not work. The eight symptom groups below can help you describe the problem; they are not a do-it-yourself diagnosis.
First, identify the symptom and the ignition system
“Pilot won’t stay lit” can describe several different situations. Note what happens and whether the fireplace uses a standing pilot or electronic ignition; the exact model and its manual determine which controls and steps apply. Manufacturer troubleshooting guides list overlapping possible causes, not a single universal fix. See Archgard’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance, the Hearth & Home Technologies BCBV36 installation manual, and the IronStrike Gas Stoves Epic installation manual.
| What you observe | Fault areas a technician may consider |
|---|---|
| Pilot never lights | Gas supply or shutoff, air in the line, control position, pilot orifice, spark or electrode |
| Pilot lights only while the control is held in, or goes out on release | Model-specific hold sequence, flame contact with the sensor, thermocouple connection or output, gas pressure, pilot orifice, or valve |
| Pilot lights, then goes out later | Flame coverage, thermocouple or thermopile, supply or pressure, wiring, or valve |
| Pilot remains lit but main burner does not start | Thermopile output, wiring, switches or thermostat controls, or gas valve |
This comparison helps you report the issue; it is not a self-diagnosis test. A standing-pilot fireplace and an electronically ignited model may have different procedures and components.
Eight common pilot-light problems
1. The pilot will not light at all
Manufacturer manuals list a closed gas supply or shutoff, air in the line, a control that is not set to PILOT, a blocked pilot orifice, and a spark or electrode problem as possibilities. Check only the control positions and steps specified in the exact owner manual. If the pilot still will not light, stop and arrange service rather than dismantling the assembly.

2. The igniter clicks or sparks, but the pilot does not catch
A spark does not establish that gas is reaching the pilot correctly or that the spark is landing where it should. Supply, gas-and-air conditions, and the pilot/electrode assembly may all be relevant. Do not assume the igniter is the only fault or take apart the pilot assembly; have a qualified technician investigate if the manual’s procedure fails.
3. The pilot lights only while you hold the control in
Possible causes include an incorrect or incomplete hold sequence, insufficient flame contact with the thermocouple, a poor thermocouple connection or output, gas pressure, pilot-orifice obstruction, or valve trouble. Release the control only as directed by your manual. Archgard specifies waiting five minutes after turning its pilot off before relighting; that interval is specific to its guidance and is not a universal fireplace wait time.

4. The pilot goes out immediately after you release the control
The model’s required hold time may not have elapsed, or the sensing and control system may not be sustaining the safety valve. This symptom alone does not establish that the thermocouple is bad. Follow the exact lighting instructions once; if the pilot still will not remain lit, stop and call for service.
5. The pilot stays lit briefly, then goes out
Record how long it stays lit and any conditions that coincide with shutdown. A technician may need to evaluate flame coverage, thermocouple or thermopile behavior, gas supply or pressure, wiring, and the valve. Recurring shutdowns call for diagnosis, not repeated relighting.

6. The pilot flame looks weak or does not reach the sensor
Flame coverage matters to thermocouple or thermopile operation. Manufacturer troubleshooting also identifies gas pressure, pilot-orifice obstruction, or an incorrect orifice as possible factors. Do not adjust gas controls, clean or modify internal parts, or change an orifice by guesswork; leave inspection and adjustment to qualified service personnel.
7. The pilot stays on, but the main burner does not ignite
This is different from a pilot that will not stay lit. Manufacturer manuals list thermopile output, wiring, switches or thermostat controls, and the gas valve among areas a technician may check. Report that the pilot remains lit but the burner does not start, rather than describing it simply as pilot failure.

8. The pilot goes out repeatedly, or the flame or fireplace looks abnormal
Repeated outages need service. Soot, a changed flame, or other abnormal operation can relate to installation, venting, log placement, air, or gas pressure, depending on the appliance. Follow the model manual and arrange qualified service; do not reposition logs or adjust vents or gas controls by guesswork.

- Find the appliance information. Identify the make and model from the label and locate that model’s owner manual. Use its exact lighting procedure and wait interval; do not substitute a generic online sequence or another model’s instructions.
- Try only the prescribed procedure. If it does not work, leave the fireplace off and arrange qualified service. Do not keep retrying, bypass a safety circuit, loosen gas fittings, or open the valve assembly.
- If you smell or suspect gas, do not try to light the fireplace. Leave the home and contact the gas provider or emergency responders from a safe location, following local instructions. Carrier’s furnace guidance supports the stop-and-leave boundary, but furnace relighting steps and timelines do not apply to fireplaces.
- Give the technician useful observations. Say whether the pilot never lights, goes out on release, shuts down later, or stays lit while the main burner fails to start. Note the elapsed time and any conditions associated with a shutdown.
Internal checks such as thermocouple or thermopile readings, gas pressure, wiring continuity, and valve condition require the model-specific procedures and instruments. The HHT and IronStrike manuals reserve gas-control troubleshooting for qualified technicians. Values or methods for one model should not be applied to another.

Why a thermocouple replacement is not a universal fix
A thermocouple can be one possible fault area when a pilot will not stay lit, but the same symptom can also involve flame contact, the connection, gas supply or pressure, a pilot orifice, or the valve. A replacement part is appropriate only if a qualified technician identifies that component as faulty and confirms compatibility with the exact fireplace model. Manufacturer troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal part fit or show that a thermocouple is the likely cause of every pilot outage.
