Before choosing plants, check sun and shade, soil and drainage, bed width, irrigation, fence material, and the height of screen you need. Then select plants suited to your region and their mature size.
Plan the fence-line bed before choosing plants
Measure the usable planting width and consider how you will reach both the plants and the fence. Leave access for pruning, repairs, and any gates or utility areas. Check mature height and spread—not just the size of plants at purchase—and avoid planting directly on a property line without considering ownership, access, and future spread. Local extension services and native-plant resources can help confirm regional suitability and flag invasive plants.
Use the ideas below as design directions rather than universal plant recipes. A narrow, sunny strip beside a wood fence calls for different choices than a wide, shaded boundary beside masonry or metal. For vines in particular, consider the plant’s growth habit, intended purpose, and site conditions, as University of Maryland Extension advises in its guide to Vines for Maryland Gardens.
Eight ways to landscape along a fence
1. Train a flowering vine on a separate trellis
A trellis in front of or alongside a fence creates a vertical planting surface and can bring blooms into a compact bed. Choose a vine that suits your climate, light, and available space, and plan how you will manage its growth. University of Maryland Extension cautions that holdfast-clinging vines can damage wood and other surfaces; training one on a separate trellis helps keep it off the fence itself. Size and build the support for the selected vine and site.

- 【Durable & Flexible Plastic Material】Made of high-quality, weather-resistant rubber, the MIXC garden edging border is designed to bend and shape easily to your landscaping needs. Whether you’re installing in straight lines, curves, or circular beds, the soft yet sturdy material can be trimmed as needed to match your garden layout. Great for long-term outdoor use in all seasons.
- 【Complete 100FT Landscape Edging Kit with 150 Stakes】The edging border kit includes one roll of 100FT black garden border (2" height) and 150 spiral anchoring stakes (6 inch each). The dense stake count allows secure installation in soft or uneven ground, keeping your lawn edging firmly in place—ideal for flower beds, tree rings, stone paths, and yard borders.
- 【Tool-Free Installation for DIY Landscaping Projects】No digging or professional help required! Simply uncoil the edging, let it warm under the sun to increase flexibility, shape it to your desired design, and hammer in the 6-inch stakes using a rubber mallet. If the stakes are difficult to insert into the ground, water the soil first and wait until it softens before installing—this will help secure the spikes firmly. Enjoy a clean and defined edge in minutes with this simple, mess-free setup.
- 【Secure and Weather-Resistant Design】Each 6-inch stake is made of durable plastic that resists rust and breakage. The edging withstands tough weather, including rain, snow, and direct sunlight. Once installed, it holds its form and position even against lawn mowers, wind, and small animals.
- 【Wide Applications for Outdoor Landscaping】Perfect for DIY home landscaping projects. Use this garden edging border to neatly separate flower beds, rock gardens, mulched areas, pavement edges, walkways, and lawn perimeters. Suitable for both flat and uneven terrain—just follow proper spacing with stakes for best results.
2. Build a mixed shrub-and-perennial border
Combine plants with varied heights, forms, foliage, and flowering seasons so the boundary feels like a garden rather than a uniform row. Check each plant’s mature spread and leave room to prune and reach the fence. The UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping Pattern Book notes that large shrubs confined to small planters may need frequent pruning—a useful reminder to match plant size to the bed, even though its Florida designs are not universal planting plans.
3. Layer a privacy screen
Where the bed is wide enough, combine suitable trees, shrubs, grasses, or groundcovers at different heights. A mix creates more structural variety than relying on one plant type and can soften the boundary while screening a view. Match species to local climate and check their mature dimensions before planting. University of Maryland Extension’s Plants for Mixed Privacy Screens provides guidance on mixed-screen design.

4. Anchor the design with evergreen structure
Locally suitable evergreen shrubs or other evergreen plants can keep the border from looking bare outside the main flowering season. Add seasonal flowering or foliage plants in front for changing color. A Florida fence-line example in the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design combines colorful vines and evergreens to improve an unattractive view. Treat that as a design concept, not a transferable Florida plant list.
5. Add a low flowering edge
A foreground band of locally suitable perennials or groundcovers can soften the base of a fence and give a taller border a finished edge. Choose plants according to sun, soil, drainage, water availability, mature spread, and the amount of maintenance you want. Leave enough space between the low edge and taller plants for access and growth; no single species list fits every region or site.

6. Turn a wide boundary into a hedgerow
If you have room beyond a narrow planting strip, a varied mix of woody and flowering plants can make the fence line a more substantial boundary or screen. Washington State University Extension describes hedgerows as often planted along fence lines and property boundaries. Because a hedgerow needs more width than a foundation-style bed, use this approach only where plants can reach their mature size without blocking access or crossing property limits.
7. Create a mow strip or clear maintenance edge
A defined edge beside the fence can make mowing close to the boundary easier and reduce repeated string trimming. Cornell’s Fence Lines guidance notes that mow strips let a mower reach fence-line weeds and advises careful string-trimmer use to avoid fence damage. The material and construction of the strip are choices for the site; keep the edge compatible with drainage, the fence, and the surrounding landscape.

8. Plant for seasonal change and habitat
Arrange regionally appropriate flowering plants, shrubs, or vines to bring changing blooms and foliage through the growing season. If wildlife value is part of the goal, favor native plants suited to your area and verify their local ecological role rather than assuming any flowering plant offers the same benefit. University of Maryland Extension notes that Maryland-native vines are adapted to local conditions and support wildlife with which they co-evolved; that regional guidance is not a nationwide species recommendation.

- For a compact bed: Consider a low flowering edge, carefully sized shrubs, or a trellis-supported vine; preserve room for pruning and fence access.
- For screening: A layered mixed screen or a hedgerow may suit a wider space. Check mature height and spread and decide how much year-round coverage you need.
- For less trimming: A clear maintenance edge or mow strip can help with mowing, while careful trimmer use protects the fence.
- For year-round structure: Use locally suitable evergreens as anchors, then add seasonal plants for variety.
- For wildlife interest: Check local native-plant guidance and choose species appropriate to the site rather than relying on a generic list.
Whichever direction you choose, account for the fence material, growing conditions, mature plant size, and the space needed to maintain both planting and boundary. A well-planned border should fit the yard not only on planting day, but also as the plants fill out.
