For containers, the best perennial depends on the pot’s light, the effect you want, and how much watering and winter protection you can provide. This shortlist, based on Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommendations, includes choices for sun, shade, flowers, fragrance and foliage. The RHS hardiness ratings below are UK guidance, not a guarantee that a plant will overwinter in every exposed pot or climate.
Which perennials grow well in containers?
These seven RHS-recommended cultivars cover different conditions and design roles. Match the plant to the light at the pot’s location, allow for its growth, and check the cultivar label before buying.
| Perennial | Best fit | RHS hardiness rating |
|---|---|---|
| Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ | Shade; trailing, bronzed foliage and spring flower spikes | H7 |
| Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ | Shade; silvered leaves and spring blue flowers | H6 |
| Dianthus ‘Gran’s Favourite’ | Sun; fragrant flowers and grey foliage | H6 |
| Geranium Blue Sunrise | Container flower interest through summer; yellow new growth and blue flowers | H7 |
| Hakonechloa macra ‘Alboaurea’ | Partial shade; striped foliage and ornamental grass texture | H7 |
| Heuchera ‘Purple Petticoats’ | Sun or partial shade; bronze, ruffled leaves with red-purple undersides | H6 |
| Hosta ‘Fire Island’ | Shade; yellow-green leaves and red stems | H7 |
Ratings are from the RHS cultivar guidance, which describes these plants as suitable for containers. They are not equivalent to a universal climate-zone guarantee. RHS: 10 best perennials for containers.
For shade
Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ can trail over a pot edge, making it useful at the front of a mixed planting. Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ brings silvered, heart-shaped foliage; the RHS suggests it as a specimen in a 25 cm pot or as part of a larger arrangement. It tolerates some drought, but drought combined with strong sun can scorch its leaves. Hosta ‘Fire Island’ is another shade option, with yellow-green foliage and red stems.

For sunny pots
Dianthus ‘Gran’s Favourite’ is fragrant, so place it where the scent can be enjoyed, such as near a doorway or patio. Its stems may be weak; discreet support or neighboring plants can help. Geranium Blue Sunrise offers yellow new growth followed by blue summer flowers, and the RHS describes it as suitable for a large clay pot as a specimen.
For partial shade and foliage interest
Hakonechloa macra ‘Alboaurea’ has striped foliage and develops slowly. The RHS recommends regular watering and feeding. Heuchera ‘Purple Petticoats’ grows in sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

How to choose the right perennial for your pot
- Check the light: Start with the plant’s stated preference and the actual conditions where the container will sit. Ajuga, Brunnera and Hosta suit shade; Dianthus and Geranium Blue Sunrise suit sunnier positions; Hakonechloa suits partial shade; Heuchera can grow in sun or partial shade.
- Decide what you want to see: Choose flowers, fragrance, foliage color, or grass-like texture. A plant selected for leaves can provide interest even when it is not flowering.
- Allow space: Use a pot suited to the plant and its mature growth. The RHS specifically suggests a 25 cm pot for Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ as a specimen, while Geranium Blue Sunrise is described for a large clay pot. Follow the label for other cultivars.
- Consider care and exposure: A small pot in full sun dries faster than a larger one. Wind and winter cold also affect exposed containers, so choose a position and pot size you can manage.
The RHS notes that most perennials can be grown in large containers. Hardy types generally remain outdoors year-round, while less hardy plants may need protection; check the label and local conditions rather than relying on a rating alone. RHS: Growing perennials in containers.
How to plant and care for container perennials
Choose a suitable pot and compost
Use a container with drainage holes. As the RHS puts it: “It is essential to have drainage holes in the base of a container.” Keep the holes clear and avoid leaving pots waterlogged in winter. For long-term plantings, RHS guidance recommends soil-based peat-free compost. Permanent plants are preferably planted in early spring, though early autumn is also suitable. Water and feed according to conditions
Container compost is limited, so plants generally need more regular watering and feeding than plants growing in the ground. Larger pots dry more slowly than small ones; in hot weather, a small pot in full sun may need frequent watering. Check the compost’s fertilizer instructions and the needs of the individual plant. Hakonechloa ‘Alboaurea’ is one of the cultivars for which the RHS specifically notes regular watering and feeding.
Plan for winter
Container roots are more exposed to cold than roots in the ground. A plant’s RHS hardiness rating therefore cannot guarantee that it will survive in a pot in every location. Winter severity, wind exposure and pot size matter; protect the pot or plant as local conditions require.

Ideas for combining perennials in one container
For a mixed pot, use the RHS “thriller, filler and spiller” approach: combine plants with different heights or positions so the planting has a focal point, fullness and foliage that can spill over the rim. Choose companions with compatible light and moisture needs. For example, a shady container could combine an upright focal plant with foliage fillers and trailing Ajuga at the edge; do not pair plants simply for appearance if their growing conditions conflict. The RHS’s 2026 Sandringham feature shows separate sunny and shade container displays, reinforcing that light should guide the combination. RHS: Sandringham container planting ideas.
If you want more options beyond these seven, the RHS container list also includes Erysimum ‘Bowles’s Mauve’, Euphorbia × martini ‘Helen Robinson’ and Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’.
