7 Fertilizers for Squash Plants: How to Choose the Right One

There is no universal best fertilizer for squash. Use a soil test to choose among complete formulas, targeted nutrients, or no added fertilizer, and avoid excess nitrogen.

For most squash gardens, the right fertilizer is the one that addresses what a soil test finds—not a universal “best” formula. If you are unsure what your soil needs, start with a test before applying fertilizer. Purdue Extension lists complete 4-8-5 and 6-10-10 fertilizers as examples for cucurbits, but those are examples, not prescriptions for every garden. Too much nitrogen can encourage vines at the expense of fruiting.

What fertilizer should you use for squash?

Choose fertilizer based on soil-test results, prior soil amendments, and the product label. If you do not know your soil’s fertility, Purdue Extension recommends getting a soil test; that can help you avoid adding nutrients that are already present. See Purdue Extension’s cucurbit growing guide.

There is no single N-P-K analysis established as best for every squash bed. Purdue names complete 4-8-5 and 6-10-10 fertilizers as examples for cucurbits. Treat these as possible formulas to compare with your soil-test recommendations, not as a reason to fertilize automatically.

Seven fertilizer choices to consider

These are seven practical fertilizer categories or approaches, not a ranking of tested brands. The sources do not establish seven objectively superior products. Let your soil test and the label determine whether any particular option fits.

  • 🌿 TARGETED NPK FOR FRUITING CROPS – Provides optimal Nitrogen for robust foliage and vine growth, Phosphorus for strong root development and flowering, and Potassium for fruit set, size, flavor, and longer shelf life.
  • 🧪 LOW pH (~1.69) UNLOCKS ESSENTIAL MICRONUTRIENTS – Improves uptake of critical elements like calcium, boron, zinc, and iron—vital for preventing fruit deformation, blossom-end rot, and leaf yellowing.
  • 💧 IMPROVES SOIL HYDRATION & ROOT DEPTH – Supports deeper root systems and better moisture retention, helping squash plants stay healthy during drought or heat stress.
  • 🌸 ENCOURAGES CONTINUOUS BLOOM & FRUIT SET – Boosts flowering cycles and pollination success for non-stop fruiting throughout the season.
  1. Complete 4-8-5 fertilizer

Purdue Extension lists 4-8-5 as an example complete fertilizer for cucurbits. Consider it only if its nutrient balance suits your soil-test recommendations and the label provides directions for your garden use.

  2. Complete 6-10-10 fertilizer

Purdue also gives 6-10-10 as an example. It is another formula to compare against soil needs—not a guarantee of better squash or a universal alternative to 4-8-5.

Pumpkin Fertilizer – Liquid Plant Food for Bigger Harvests, 8 oz
    • Supports Vine Growth & Pumpkin Development – Helps encourage strong vines and consistent pumpkin formation.
    • Balanced Nutrition for Garden Crops – Provides nutrients suited for steady vegetable garden growth.
    • Ideal for Garden Beds & Raised Rows – Suitable for backyard gardens, raised beds, and seasonal planting.
    • Made in USA
  3. A complete fertilizer selected from a soil test

If a test calls for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, choose a complete fertilizer whose analysis and label directions align with that advice. A complete formula is not automatically appropriate just because squash is a heavy-growing crop.

  4. Nitrogen fertilizer, only if needed

Where soil is already well amended, UC IPM says nitrogen may be the only nutrient needed, if any. Use a nitrogen-only product only when soil-test guidance supports it; excess nitrogen can produce vigorous vines while delaying or reducing fruiting.

    • Optimum levels of primary plant nutrients
    • Contains no GMOs, chicken manure or sewage sludge
    • Feeds for several months
    • Made with 100% organic and natural ingredients
  5. Nitrogen-and-phosphorus fertilizer for unamended soil

UC IPM advises that when organic amendments have not been used, fertilizer containing nitrogen and phosphorus may be applied before planting. Check the soil test for whether those nutrients are needed and follow the fertilizer label.

  6. Compost or well-rotted manure as a soil amendment

Organic matter can be part of preparing the bed. Purdue advises adding organic matter, while UC IPM notes that prior compost or manure changes fertilizer needs. Do not assume compost or manure supplies every nutrient in the amount your squash needs; use a soil test to guide any additional fertilizer.

  7. No added fertilizer when the soil does not need it

Fertilizing is not a requirement in itself. If a soil test and the history of amendments indicate adequate fertility, adding more can be unnecessary. Reassess rather than applying a product by habit.

How to read fertilizer numbers

The three numbers on a fertilizer analysis represent the labeled percentages of nitrogen, phosphate (P₂O₅), and potash (K₂O), in that order. For example, 4-8-5 and 6-10-10 are analyses, not application rates. Check the product package for its exact nutrient declaration and directions before applying it.

How to decide what your squash bed needs

  1. Test the soil. If fertility is uncertain, use a soil test and follow its recommendations for your garden. Purdue Extension’s advice is aimed at home-garden cucurbits.
  2. Account for amendments already added. Note whether the bed has received compost, manure, or other organic material. UC IPM makes fertilizer advice conditional on that history.
  3. Match the product to the identified need. Compare its N-P-K analysis with the soil-test recommendation. A complete fertilizer supplies all three listed nutrients; a targeted product supplies fewer. Do not select by the word “complete” alone.
  4. Apply only as the label directs. Use a product labeled for the intended garden use and follow its application rate and timing. The example analyses above do not specify how much to apply.
  5. Watch nitrogen input. Purdue Extension cautions: “Do not over fertilize with nitrogen as this encourages vine growth and retards fruiting.” Avoid adding extra nitrogen simply to make plants look greener or larger.

Why commercial fertilizer rates do not translate to a home garden

Extension recommendations for farms are tied to a region, soil-test method, acreage, bed configuration, and production system. They are not home-garden rates. For example, Alabama Extension’s commercial summer squash guide describes a total seasonal recommendation of 100–130 lb/acre of nitrogen, with phosphorus and potassium dependent on soil tests. It also discusses split applications and fertigation. That Alabama commercial guidance should not be converted directly into a backyard product dose; consult the Alabama guide only in its stated production context.

Regional plans can also take precedence over general tables. Maryland Extension’s 2024–2025 commercial vegetable recommendations say state soil-test reports and nutrient management plans supersede the table. The Maryland recommendations are commercial and regional guidance, not a substitute for home-garden soil advice.

Bottom line for choosing a squash fertilizer

Start with a soil test, then choose a labeled product that supplies only the nutrients your bed needs. Purdue’s 4-8-5 and 6-10-10 examples are reasonable formulas to compare, not a seven-product ranking or a universal prescription. Consider compost or well-rotted manure as part of soil preparation, account for what is already in the bed, and avoid excess nitrogen that favors vine growth over fruiting.
