Variegated plants have leaves or other plant parts marked by streaks, blotches, or patches of different colours. For reliable, well-documented choices, look to shade-loving hostas outdoors and colourful tropical foliage plants indoors. The four selections below show how varied their patterns and growing needs can be.
What variegated foliage means
The Royal Horticultural Society defines variegation as leaves or other plant parts having “streaks, blotches or patches of different colours.” Green paired with gold or white is common, but patterns and colour combinations vary by plant.
Four plants with striking variegated foliage
| Plant | Where it grows | Foliage and form | Light and care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goeppertia roseopicta | Indoors; tropical foliage plant | Colourful, intricately patterned leaves; the cited guide does not specify mature form. | Bright indirect light and warm, humid conditions. Keep compost evenly moist during the growing season; avoid overwatering in winter. RHS growing guide |
| Goeppertia lietzei ‘Fusion White’ | Indoors; tropical foliage plant | White-variegated foliage; the cited guide does not specify mature form. | Bright indirect light and warm, humid conditions. Keep compost evenly moist during the growing season; avoid overwatering in winter. RHS growing guide |
| Stromanthe sanguinea ‘Triostar’ | Indoors; tropical foliage plant | Colourful, patterned leaves; the cited guide does not specify mature form. | Bright indirect light and warm, humid conditions. Keep compost evenly moist during the growing season; avoid overwatering in winter. RHS growing guide |
| Hostas | Outdoors or in containers; shade-loving | Varieties range widely in leaf size, shape, colour, and texture. Some have cream or gold markings; plants are clumping. | Choose a shady spot. Seedlings grown from variegated hostas will be one colour rather than true to type. RHS growing guide |
How to care for variegated plants
Care depends on the plant, not simply on whether its leaves are variegated. Hostas suit shade outdoors, while the tropical plants above need warmth, humidity, and bright indirect light. Check the needs of the specific plant before choosing a site or setting a watering routine.
Tradescantia cerinthoides ‘Variegata’
This trailing evergreen houseplant has dark green leaves striped with light pink and cream, with purple, hairy undersides. Give it bright filtered light rather than direct sun. Remove plain green shoots so they do not overtake the variegated growth. RHS plant profile
