To get rid of fungus gnats, first check whether small, dark flies are coming from damp plant pots or other moist growing media. If they are, reduce excess moisture, improve drainage, use yellow sticky traps to catch adults, and consider a labeled larval treatment only when appropriate. “Gnats” is a broad name, though: outdoor insects or larvae in decaying material may be harmless, so identify the source before treating.
1. Identify the flies and where they are breeding
Fungus gnats are small, dark, delicate flies commonly associated with moist organic growing media. Their larvae live in the media and feed mainly on fungi and organic matter; some may also feed on roots. Look for adults around affected plants and check whether they seem to be emerging from damp potting mix or another wet growing site. Similar-looking flies may have a different source, so seeing a few adults is not enough to justify treatment.
Not every outdoor “gnat” problem is a plant pest. The University of Maryland Extension notes that, in wet years near wooded areas, dark-winged fungus gnat larvae may appear in moving masses outdoors; these larvae are harmless and need no management. University of Maryland Extension: Fungus Gnats
2. Reduce excess moisture without stressing the plant
Fungus gnats thrive when growing media stays excessively moist. Let the surface and media dry between waterings as far as the particular plant can safely tolerate, and avoid leaving pots in standing water. Do not impose a fixed drying schedule: watering needs vary by plant, pot, and conditions.
Virginia Tech Extension emphasizes that managing excess soil water is key to control. Its fact sheet, credited to Patricia L.S. Wooden and revised August 28, 2026, also explains that yellow sticky cards catch and monitor adults but do not replace moisture management. Virginia Tech Extension: Fungus Gnats
3. Improve drainage and remove decaying debris
Make sure containers drain freely and do not let excess water collect in saucers. Remove dead leaves, fallen plant matter, and other decaying organic debris from pots and nearby growing areas. These changes reduce persistently wet conditions and the organic material associated with fungus gnat development.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra Sticky & Fast Acting: Bright yellow color attracts fruit flies and fungus gnats instantly, while extra-strong adhesive locks insects in place without dripping or drying out. Two Shapes: Sunflower, Butterfly
- Safe for Home & Plants: Chemical-free, non-toxic, and odorless—safe to use around kids, pets, houseplants, herbs, and vegetables indoors or outdoors.
- Easy to Use & Long Lasting: Just peel and stick near plants or problem areas. Each trap works for weeks, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
- Double-Sided Design for Maximum Catch: Catches flying pests from both sides, covering more area than single-sided traps and helping monitor infestation levels effectively.
- Eco-Friendly Pest Control Solution: No pesticides, no sprays, no harmful fumes. A clean and responsible way to control flying insects in your home and garden.
4. Use yellow sticky traps to monitor and catch adults
Place yellow sticky traps near affected pots or among the plant canopy. They can show whether adult flies are present and capture some of them, but they do not kill larvae in the growing media or remove the breeding source. Treat traps as a supporting measure, alongside moisture and sanitation changes.
5. Consider a larval treatment only for confirmed infestations in suitable media
If fungus gnats are confirmed to be breeding in pots or container media and moisture changes are not enough, biological options include products containing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) and beneficial Steinernema feltiae nematodes. UC Integrated Pest Management describes these as options for larvae in container settings. UC IPM: Fungus Gnats
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use a Bti product only if its label covers the plant-media use and application you intend.
- Follow supplier directions for nematodes, including any conditions needed for their use.
- Do not assume a product intended for standing water is appropriate for potting media.
- Keep moisture management in place; a larval treatment is not a substitute for correcting persistently wet conditions.
UC IPM generally does not recommend insecticides for fungus gnat management in and around the home. If the pest remains uncertain or the problem persists, contact a local extension service or qualified professional rather than applying an unidentified product.

- [Catches Gnats, Fruit Flies, Whiteflies And More] Yellow sticky traps with top-grade adhesive grab fungus gnats, aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and whiteflies on contact from both faces. Place each card at soil level near drainage holes for fastest results. Works for indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
- [Decorative Shapes That Stay In Your Pots Year-Round] Yellow sunflower and butterfly designs look intentional in any plant display rather than calling out a pest problem. The yellow color attracts insects and decorates at the same time. Leave one trap per pot as a permanent monitoring layer; if a new infestation starts, you will spot insects on the surface before your plants show damage. Two options offer flexibility across pot sizes and styles.
- [Peels Clean Without Tearing] Start at the bottom and slowly peel one protective film at a time to cleanly reveal the adhesive face. The thicker rigid plastic stake and trap keep the card flat and straight throughout setup so you do not wrestle a floppy surface. No glue on hands, tearing, accidental folding before insertion, or hassle. Three steps: peel, hold, push into soil.
- [Family Friendly Design & Odorless] The family friendly physical adhesive trap is odorless and leaves no residue on surfaces near your plants. Keep out of direct reach to avoid hair or skin contact with the glue surface.
- [Works Indoors, Outdoors And In Hanging Baskets] UV-resistant construction holds up under direct sunlight without degrading the adhesive. The pointed plastic stake inserts directly into soil; use the included wire to hang traps near hanging baskets, window herb gardens, or bare-root seedling trays where no soil is available. Two deployment modes, one pack.
6. Prevent a return with clean media and plant checks
For container planting, use pasteurized container mix and remove decaying debris rather than reusing suspect, infested media. Inspect plants and their growing media when bringing them home or moving outdoor plants indoors. UC IPM recommends these sanitation and prevention measures for container settings; pasteurized mix is not a universal treatment for outdoor garden soil.
