They do not produce their own light: the “glow” is an effect of contrast and illumination. For an evening garden, place these plants where you spend time at night—beside an entrance or walkway, or around a patio or deck—and check local growing conditions before choosing varieties.
How to make plants stand out after dark
Dark flowers and foliage tend to disappear as daylight fades. White or very pale blooms, along with silver or variegated leaves, are easier to pick out in moonlight and artificial light. Think about fragrance as well as color: a few scented plants can enrich an evening garden, while several strong fragrances crowded into one small space may feel overpowering.
The six choices below include a vine whose flowers open at night and plants valued chiefly for their pale flowers. Their presence in an evening-garden feature does not establish that every plant suits every climate or site; ask a local nursery or extension service about regional suitability and care.
Six plants for an evening landscape
1. Moonflower (Ipomoea alba)
This climbing vine produces large, fragrant white flowers that open at night. A 1994 Los Angeles Times gardening feature reported blooms up to six inches across and said the vine could grow to 30 feet; those historical figures describe potential, not a guaranteed size for every cultivar or growing condition. The feature also noted that individual blooms last one evening. Provide sturdy support and enough room for a vigorous climber.

2. White impatiens
White impatiens can be used in mass plantings where their flowers will show up more readily after dark than darker-colored varieties. They are a simple way to brighten a bed near a path or seating area without relying on a night-opening bloom.
3. White begonia (Begonia semperflorens)
White begonias were included in a demonstration evening garden. Their pale flowers can help maintain contrast at night, but the cited feature does not specify a current cultivar or give site-specific care guidance. Confirm local growing requirements before planting.

4. White clematis
A white clematis was another plant in the demonstration garden. The Los Angeles Times article’s archived text spells the name “Clematis armondii”; current spelling conventions render the name as Clematis armandii. Check the identification and regional suitability with a local expert before selecting this species, rather than assuming the example is appropriate for your climate.
5. Star jasmine
Star jasmine combines pale flowers with fragrance, making it a candidate for an evening planting near a place where you can enjoy its scent. Use restraint when grouping it with other strongly fragrant plants; several perfumes concentrated in a small area can overwhelm rather than enhance the space.

6. Calla lily
The cupped white flowers of calla lily can appear to float against dark foliage at night. Use it where the contrast can be seen from a path, entrance, or outdoor seating area, and confirm that its growing needs suit your site.
Plan the planting around how you use the space
- At an entrance or along a walkway: Use white blooms where visitors will notice them as they approach or pass.
- Beside a patio or deck: Combine a few pale flowers with foliage that contrasts against the darker background.
- For a fragrant spot: Place night-fragrant choices such as moonflower or star jasmine where their scent can be enjoyed without crowding several strong perfumes together.
- For a climbing feature: Plan the support before planting moonflower; the vine needs a sturdy structure.
- Before buying: Verify species, growing conditions, and regional suitability locally, especially for the clematis example.
Do any of these plants actually light up?
No reliable evidence in the cited material establishes that these six garden plants emit bioluminescent light. Here, “light up” means that pale blooms and foliage remain visible when moonlight or outdoor lighting reaches them. An older account of apparent luminous flowers also noted that such appearances could be optical illusions, not proof that these recommended plants glow.
