For a fall porch, entry, or yard, cornstalks add height while straw bales, pumpkins, gourds, and mums create color and texture. Try one of these five layouts, keeping dried materials away from flames and heat sources and leaving doors, stairs, and exit routes clear.
1. Dress a porch post
Tie a dried cornstalk bundle to a porch post and group pumpkins or gourds at its base. The vertical stalks make a simple entry feature; the produce fills the space below. The University of Illinois Extension suggests tying stalk bundles to porch posts and using pumpkins and gourds in fall displays.
Set the arrangement to one side of the entrance, not where it narrows the doorway. Keep stalks away from lights, fireplaces, vents, radiators, and other heat sources; dried decorations can catch fire, cautions Oklahoma State University Extension.
2. Frame a mailbox or tree
Fasten a cornstalk bundle to a mailbox post or tree trunk, then place a small pumpkin nearby. This is a good choice when you want a seasonal accent away from the porch. Illinois Extension names mailbox posts and tree trunks as possible places for stalks.

Keep the display clear of paths, stairs, and windows. If the stalks include ears of corn, expect that squirrels may visit: Illinois Extension notes that corn can attract them.
3. Build a straw-bale-and-pumpkin grouping
Use a straw bale as a low display base, with pumpkins or hard-rind gourds arranged beside it or on top. A bale gives the grouping a raised focal point without requiring a tall structure. Choose pumpkins with at least a couple of inches of stem and no blemishes; Illinois Extension says blemishes can indicate bruising or rot.

Do not place a candle on the bale or nearby. Massachusetts Department of Fire Services advises keeping cornstalks and hay bales away from doorways, stairways, and windows, and recommends glow sticks or battery-operated candles in pumpkins instead of open flames. See its Halloween safety tips.
4. Add a pot of mums
Arrange a straw bale, potted chrysanthemums, and a few pumpkins together for a mix of low and taller forms. Put the mum where it is easy to water and where the display will not obstruct an entrance. For a plant with color already showing, Illinois Extension recommends choosing a mum with about half its flowers open. Check its water daily, and more often in full sun.

5. Make a harvest vignette at an arbor
Tie cornstalks near the edge of an arbor and gather gourds and Indian corn at ground level. The combination uses a vertical feature and a low harvest grouping; Illinois Extension describes stalks at an arbor edge and includes corn and gourds among fall decorations. Keep everything outside exit routes and away from open flames and heat.

Straw and hay are not interchangeable for every purpose
Straw bales are specifically mentioned by Illinois Extension as seasonal décor, and the article suggests reusing display straw as winter mulch for tender or newly planted perennials and some root crops. Hay can also be used decoratively, but that straw-reuse recommendation is not a claim about hay. Extension Foundation’s agricultural safety guidance says hay fire risk is greater than straw fire risk; its bale-monitoring instructions concern agricultural storage, not ordinary decorative displays.

Keep fire and access risks in view
- Keep dried stalks, hay, and straw away from candles, open flames, fireplaces, vents, radiators, and other heat sources.
- Do not block doorways, stairs, windows, paths, or emergency exits. Massachusetts fire-safety guidance specifically calls for clear exits.
- Use glow sticks or battery-operated candles for pumpkin lighting rather than an open-flame candle.
Rules can be stricter at public or covered events than at a home. Cornell Environment, Health and Safety prohibits cut or dried plant materials such as cornstalks, straw, and hay at covered events unless they are treated and tested flame resistant by an approved agency. That is Cornell’s event policy, not a universal household rule; check the venue’s requirements before decorating.
Source materials locally and plan for wildlife
A local farm or farm stand is one option for pumpkins, mums, corn, and gourds, as described by Illinois Extension. If you want to reuse the display as mulch, select straw rather than assuming hay has the same recommended reuse. Corn-bearing stalks may draw squirrels, so choose a spot where wildlife visits are welcome.
