Your tape measure’s moving hook, case, blade, and printed marks can do more than show inches. Knowing what each feature is for can make measuring and layout easier—and help you spot where a tape’s markings are only a guide.
1. The end hook moves on purpose
Why does the hook on your tape measure move? On many tapes, the end hook slides slightly to compensate for its thickness. When you hook it over an outside edge, the hook shifts outward; when you press it against an inside edge, it shifts inward. That movement helps the blade’s zero point align with the surface in either setup.
STANLEY calls its design Tru-Zero and says the hook allows accurate inside and outside measurements. Komelon likewise describes a sliding tip that accounts for tip width. A loose-looking hook is not necessarily damaged, though a bent hook or one that no longer moves freely can affect readings. STANLEY Tools Support; Komelon USA FAQ.
2. The case can help measure an inside span
If the case has its length printed on it, you can use that dimension to measure between two walls or other surfaces when the blade cannot hook over the far edge:

#1 Best Overall
- 13 ft. Of reach*: allows for easy measurements when working alone (*based on maximum extension of average professional user)
- Compact size: easy to grip and store in any tool belt
- Easy grip design: extensive rubber overmold provides a comfortable grip and impact resistance
- Easy read fractions: fractions printed on the blade in alternating colors and heights for quick, easy measurements
- Includes: (1) CMHT37443S Tape Measure
- Press the back of the case against one surface.
- Extend the blade until its end reaches the opposite surface.
- Read the blade, then add the case length shown on the tape.
For example, STANLEY lists a 3-inch case length for model 30-455. That dimension applies to that model; case lengths are not universal. Check your tape’s marking or manufacturer specifications before adding a case measurement. STANLEY 30-455 product listing.
3. Standout is the blade’s unsupported reach
Standout describes how far a tape blade can extend horizontally before it buckles under its own weight. More standout can make it easier to measure across a gap by yourself, without someone holding the far end. The usable distance varies with the tape, the blade’s position, and conditions, so treat it as a helpful feature rather than a guarantee that every measurement will stay straight.
Rank #2
- 20% more compact grip**: For improved ergonomics and control
- Integrated finger brake: For improved blade control
- Fractional blade graphics for quick and easy measuring
- Durable blade coating for longer blade life
STANLEY lists 7 feet of standout for model 30-455. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independently verified comparison with other tapes. STANLEY 30-455 product listing.
4. Red and black marks can speed up framing layout
Some tape blades highlight common spacing intervals. Komelon says red marks at every 16 inches help with common stud-center layout, while black diamonds at 19.2-inch intervals are intended for engineered joist and stud spacing. STANLEY also lists both spacing marks on model 30-455. Komelon USA FAQ; STANLEY 30-455 product listing.
Rank #3
- 16-foot retractable measuring tape for personal or professional use
- Provides both SAE and metric measurements
- Wide 3/4-inch blade with easy readability
- Convenient belt clip and lanyard for easy access
- Molded, impact-resistant case with easy grip-ability
These are layout cues, not a way to confirm what is behind a finished wall. Framing can differ from a common spacing pattern, so locate and verify studs or joists before fastening or cutting.
5. Some tapes print fractions or both unit systems
Blade markings are not the same on every tape. STANLEY offers a 25-foot fractional-read model with fractional graphics, as well as a 5-meter/16-foot model with both metric and imperial graduations. Fractional labels can make a reading quicker to interpret; dual scales can be useful when plans, components, or measurements use different units. Choose a blade whose markings match the way you work rather than assuming every tape has the same scale. STANLEY tape measure listings.
Rank #4
- QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade
- ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold for added grip
When accuracy matters
Check that the blade is straight, read it squarely, and use the hook in the same way each time. Komelon USA’s FAQ states a maximum variance of 1/32 inch over the full length of a 25-foot tape compared with a calibrated NIST tape. That is Komelon’s published claim about its tapes; it is not a tolerance for all brands, nor a claim made by NIST. Komelon USA FAQ.
