The best food processor for pesto is the one that suits the amount you usually make. A compact chopper or mini bowl fits small batches; an 8-cup processor is a reasonable starting point for a standard batch; and a 14- to 16-cup machine makes more sense when you regularly double recipes or cook for a crowd. These are capacity-based recommendations, not a tested ranking: the available sources do not compare pesto results across these models.
How to choose a food processor for pesto
Start with recipe volume, then consider whether the processor can also manage smaller quantities and other kitchen tasks you care about. Bowl capacity alone does not establish how well a machine makes pesto: the cited product pages and recipes support processor use and describe features, but do not provide comparative performance tests.
- Small batches: Look for a compact chopper or a processor with a dedicated mini bowl and blade. A large work bowl may be more capacity than you need for a small quantity.
- One standard batch: A pesto-specific buying guide recommends an 8-cup processor for a standard single batch. Treat that as the guide’s advice, not a universal requirement.
- Large or multiple batches: The same guide recommends a 14-cup machine for doubled or tripled batches. A larger bowl is useful only if the quantity you make warrants it.
- Other cooking tasks: If you also want to slice or grate ingredients, check the exact model’s included discs and accessories. Do not assume an accessory is included because it is available separately.
- Kitchen fit: Consider counter space, storage, and how often you will use the machine. The cited sources do not provide comparable footprint measurements for all five options.
Using a food processor for pesto is supported by published recipes: Cuisinart’s basil pesto recipe uses a food processor chopping blade, and KitchenAid’s pesto recipe is also made in a food processor.

- Built-in bowl scraper saves time. Quickly process ingredients without stopping to use a spatula. Simply move the scraper from side-to-side to scrape the bowl while the food processor is running or the power is off — no need to remove the lid.
- Slice, shred, chop, mix and puree with 2 versatile attachments. The Hamilton Beach food processor gives you 5 processing functions and includes a stainless steel slicing/shredding disc and chopping/pureeing blade so you can tackle every job with ease.
- Powerful 450 watt motor. Make healthy salads, homemade salsa, hearty acai bowls and more. The 450 watt motor easily powers through the toughest ingredients, so you can spend less time processing and more time enjoying.
- Precise control with 2 speeds plus pulse. The low and high speeds plus pulse give you the control you need for a variety of recipes. Use the high speed when you need more power and select the low speed for processing or mixing delicate foods.
- 10 cup bowl capacity. The generous 10 cup bowl fits large volumes of food all at once, and the large feed chute saves you time by reducing the need to pre-cut food before processing or using as a vegetable chopper.
| Model | Capacity or small-batch feature | Why it may fit | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuisinart Mini-Prep Plus DLC-2ABC | 3-cup mini chopper, according to the pesto guide | Small batches | The guide names it as its small-batch choice; that recommendation is editorial judgment, not a comparative test. |
| Cuisinart Elemental 8-Cup FP-8SV | 8-cup bowl, according to the pesto guide | A standard single batch | The guide names it as its standard-batch pick; no source here independently verifies its pesto performance. |
| KitchenAid 7-Cup KFP0718 | 7-cup bowl, according to the pesto guide | A compact mid-size option | The guide lists it as a compact option. KitchenAid publishes a food-processor pesto recipe, but it does not establish this exact model’s results. |
| Cuisinart 14-Cup DFP-14BCNY | 14-cup bowl, according to the pesto guide | Doubled or tripled batches | The guide recommends it for larger batches; this is not an independently tested performance claim. |
| Breville Sous Chef 16 BFP810 | 16-cup bowl; S-blade and mini-bowl accessories listed on the official US product page | Large batches and broader food-preparation use | The product page lists these features, but they do not establish that it is better for pesto than the other options. |
The capacity recommendations in this table come from Food & Wine’s pesto-specific guide. Breville’s listed bowl and accessories are on its US Sous Chef 16 product page. Product configurations and availability can vary by region and listing.
Small batches: prioritize the working bowl
If you make pesto in modest quantities, consider whether the machine has a small bowl designed to work with smaller amounts. Magimix says its mini bowl and mini blade can be used for pesto, and its range page describes models with a mini bowl. The available sources do not establish a specific Magimix model number for that configuration, so verify the model and included components before choosing one.

- Simply stack and press to chop: The patented stack & press design makes it easy to assemble and use. Simply press the lid to chop and release to stop. Since all you do is stack the lid on top of the bowl, no difficult twist-locking is needed.
- Perfect size for everyday use: Chop and mix up to 3 cups of ingredients every day of the week with this 3 cup chopper. It's the perfect size for everyday use, yet small enough for easy storage.
- Easily chop, puree and emulsify with stainless steel blades: Durable stainless steel blades make easy work of a multitude of ingredients including onions, carrots and nuts. Oil dispenser on lid makes it easy to emulsify dressings, dips and sauces.
- Easy to clean: The bowl, lid and removable blades of the Hamilton Beach chopper are all dishwasher safe.
- Power through tough ingredients: This small food chopper has a 350 watt motor to provide all the power you need to prepare all types of food including onions, nuts, herbs, hummus, dressings and homemade baby food.
A dedicated mini bowl is different from simply having a large main bowl: it gives you a smaller work area for the ingredients. Confirm that the mini bowl and blade are included with the exact model you are considering, rather than assuming they come standard.

The listed capacities and features can help you narrow the field by batch size and accessories.
