Turn items you already have into garden features with a little repositioning, paint, or simple assembly. An old jar can become a lantern, bottles can edge a path, and a chair, pallet, or broken ceramics can take on a new decorative role. Choose a project to suit your materials and the spot you want to brighten.
1. Make a mason jar lantern
A glass jar can add a warm point of light to a patio or garden corner. Place a candle or tea light inside; for a hanging version, attach rustic twine and suspend the jar from a sturdy support. Keep the lantern as optional decor and choose a stable placement. The cited guide describes project ideas, not fire-safety testing.
2. Edge a path with bottles
Partly bury wine bottles along a garden path or bed, leaving their necks visible to create a distinctive border. Arrange bottles in a continuous line, and use different colors or sizes if you want a more varied look. 3. Turn an old chair into a planter
A chair that no longer works as furniture can become a focal point among flowers. Paint it to suit the garden, remove the seat to create an opening, and use that space to hold a planter. If you would rather keep the chair functional, the handout also suggests replacing its seat with wood to make a bench.
4. Rework a pallet into a trellis or display
Use a pallet as the starting point for a vertical garden feature: the handout suggests breaking pallets down to make trellises for climbing plants, as well as fences, raised beds, potting benches, and sheds. For a focused decor project, choose a trellis or a structure for displaying pots and let its shape add height and texture to the space.

If the pallet’s treatment is unknown, do not assume it is suitable for a structure used to grow edible crops. The cited handout offers project ideas but does not establish the safety of unknown pallet treatments.
5. Create ceramic mosaic garden art
Broken plates or other ceramics can add color and pattern to a garden feature. Arrange the pieces as a mosaic on a concrete slab and bond them with mortar, as described in the garden-art handout. The same materials can inspire stepping-stone decoration, but the source does not establish that exposed broken edges are suitable for a walking surface.

Choose a project that fits your garden
Start with what you have and the effect you want. These projects serve different purposes, and the amount of cutting, attachment, or securing depends on the particular materials and placement.
