5 Best Fertilizers for Onions: Choose by Soil-Test Results

The best onion fertilizer depends on your soil test. Compare five options by nutrient need, timing, and how to apply them safely.

There is no single best fertilizer for every onion bed. Start with a soil test, then choose a fertilizer that supplies only the nutrients your soil needs. Onions need available nitrogen, but excess or late nitrogen can delay maturity and leave bulbs with large necks that cure poorly and store badly. The five choices below are different tools for different soil-test results—not a universal product ranking.

How to choose an onion fertilizer

Use the soil-test recommendation to decide whether the bed needs nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or potassium (K), and in what amount. Fertilizer labels show three numbers for the percentages of nitrogen, phosphate (P₂O₅), and potash (K₂O). For example, an 8-2-4 label means 8% nitrogen, 2% phosphate, and 4% potash. Those numbers describe nutrient analysis, not a guarantee that the blend fits your garden. University of Minnesota Extension explains how to interpret soil-test recommendations and fertilizer labels.

For phosphorus and potassium, follow the soil test rather than applying them automatically. Unless the test specifically calls for more phosphorus, UMN Extension recommends a low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer. Local soil and climate guidance can affect both rates and timing.

Five fertilizer choices for onions

Choice Best fit How to use it
Urea, 45-0-0 A measured nitrogen side-dress when nitrogen is needed UMN’s home-garden example is 0.25 to 0.5 pounds per 25 feet of row, once or twice after roots are well developed; apply beside the row, about six inches away, and scratch into the soil.
Low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer A soil test does not recommend additional phosphorus Choose the analysis and application rate to meet the remaining soil-test recommendations; avoid adding phosphorus just because it appears in a common blend.
Complete fertilizer A preplant soil-test recommendation calls for a blend containing multiple nutrients Match its N-P-K analysis and rate to the recommendation. “Complete” does not mean universally appropriate.
Finished compost Adding organic matter to the bed Use well-rotted compost as an amendment, not as a standardized nutrient dose; its nutrient content varies.
Soil test You do not yet know which nutrients the bed needs Test before buying fertilizer, especially before choosing phosphorus or potassium inputs.

1. Urea 45-0-0 for a measured nitrogen side-dress

Urea supplies nitrogen without phosphorus or potassium. UMN Extension’s home-garden guidance gives a regional example: apply 0.25 to 0.5 pounds of urea labeled 45-0-0 per 25 feet of row once or twice during the season, after roots are well developed. Place it alongside the row about six inches from the plants and scratch it into the soil. Use that rate as Minnesota guidance, not a universal prescription; follow local recommendations and your soil test.

2. Low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer when phosphorus is not needed

If your soil test does not call for additional phosphorus, select a product with little or no phosphorus and use its analysis to determine whether it supplies other recommended nutrients. A familiar balanced fertilizer may add phosphorus your bed does not need. UMN’s specific advice is to use a low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer unless the soil-test report recommends more: UMN Extension’s onion-growing guidance.

3. A complete fertilizer only when its analysis fits

A complete fertilizer can be appropriate if the preplant soil-test recommendation calls for the nutrients it contains. Check the three-number analysis against that recommendation and apply the recommended amount. Do not assume that a product with all three numbers, or a “balanced” blend, is automatically the right choice for onions.

4. Finished compost as an organic-matter amendment

Well-rotted compost can add organic matter to the bed, but it is not a predictable substitute for a fertilizer with a known analysis. Nutrient levels vary, so do not treat an unspecified amount of compost as a fixed dose of N, P, or K. UMN Extension recommends well-rotted manure or compost and cautions against fresh manure. Avoid weed-and-feed lawn products in vegetable beds; herbicides in those products can injure vegetables.

5. A soil test before buying nutrient inputs

A soil test is not fertilizer, but it is the choice that makes the other choices more precise. It helps determine whether phosphorus or potassium is needed and guides the amount of fertilizer to apply. USU Extension describes a soil test as the most accurate way to address fertilizer requirements: USU’s onion soil-and-fertility guidance.

When to fertilize onions

Before planting: follow recommendations for phosphorus and potassium

Use the soil test to guide preplant phosphorus and potassium. Do not apply these nutrients by habit if the test does not recommend them.

After roots develop: apply nitrogen only as needed

UMN’s urea example is a side-dress after roots are well developed, applied beside the row rather than directly against onion plants. The amount and whether to repeat it should follow local recommendations and the soil-test result.

After bulb initiation: avoid late or heavy nitrogen

Too much nitrogen can delay maturity, create large necks that are difficult to cure, soften bulbs, and reduce storage quality. USU Extension cautions Utah growers against late applications after mid-July and heavy nitrogen after bulb initiation because they can delay maturity and impair curing. The mid-July date is Utah-specific; use locally appropriate timing elsewhere. USU Extension explains the timing risk.

Quick decision guide

  • Soil test calls for nitrogen: consider a measured nitrogen source such as urea, following local rate and timing guidance.
  • Soil test does not call for phosphorus: choose a low- or no-phosphorus product rather than a blend that adds unnecessary phosphorus.
  • Soil test calls for several nutrients: use a complete fertilizer only if its analysis and application rate match the recommendation.
  • You want to improve organic matter: add finished compost as an amendment, while accounting separately for the fertilizer nutrients the soil test recommends.
  • You do not have a soil test: get one before selecting phosphorus or potassium fertilizer.
