The examples come from Dave Mowitz’s January 29, 2020 Successful Farming article. Its plans listing names all four projects and says plans are available.
1. Super-size rolling tool bench
Michael Blake and Dustin Harrison, who farm near Aurelia, Iowa, built a large mobile bench to cut down on trips across the shop and bring both tools and workspace to repairs. Blake said, “We got tired of walking back and forth across the shop to get tools when working on big projects.”
Reported build details
- Size: 4 feet wide by 16 feet long.
- Frame: 2-inch square tubing, with a 3/16-inch steel-plate top.
- Lower shelf: Tube steel and salvaged hog floor grates.
- Tool wall: Two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood screwed back to back.
- Mobility: 4-inch-diameter castering wheels.
The bench also provides a surface for smaller repair items. Its reported length is substantial, so consider travel paths, turning space, wheel capacity, and floor conditions before designing a similar unit.

Reported build details
The base began with a 300-gallon fuel tank cut in half and topped with a grate. Cabinets above and beside it hold bulk oil, oil barrels, jugs, funnels, fill cans, and smaller lubricant and coolant containers. The cabinet frame is made from 2-by-2-inch square tubing, with 1/8-inch sheet-metal panels. Drip pans direct liquids to the grate-topped tank, which holds waste oil for transfer to an outside storage tank.

This is a description of one builder’s arrangement, not guidance on legal or safe waste-oil handling. Check the requirements that apply where the shop is located, including storage, spill prevention, and disposal, before adapting the setup.
3. Space-saving vertical steel rack
Doug Repp’s rack stores long fabrication steel upright in a smaller floor footprint than horizontal storage would require. The example is more than 16 feet tall and 22 feet long. Its weight rests on the floor; two wall attachments primarily stabilize it. The face leans back roughly 10 degrees, while rear struts form a triangle that transfers the rack and steel load to the floor.

Reported build details and handling
- The rack uses 2-by-4-inch tubing with 1/4-inch sidewalls.
- Shelf pieces are roughly 11-inch lengths of 1-by-2-inch C-channel.
- Repp keeps heavy steel in the lower half and uses a forklift to access higher levels.
These measurements describe one shop’s rack; they do not establish a load rating or a generally safe design. Before building or loading a tall rack, have a competent person evaluate the steel weights, floor capacity, bracing and attachments, forklift access, and site conditions. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service cautions that its farm plans may be outdated and “are not construction plans” or a substitute for competent design assistance. See its farm building and equipment plans guidance.
4. Metal center on wheels
Neal Nelson built a mobile work center to bring fabrication equipment to welding repairs and larger projects, rather than moving jobs back and forth to a permanent welding table. He said the center “saves us considerable time either positioning machinery near a permanent welding table or walking back and forth to and from a repair.”

- Connects 3/4" garden hose to tire valves to fill tires with liquid.
- Complete with 2 adapters - one standard bore and one large bore.
- Convenient bleeder valve to release trapped air
- Designed to fit standard garden hose, air/water valves, and various other valves/extensions
- The product comes with 1 year quality warranty.
Reported build details
The table uses salvaged 3-inch square tubing, with 1/8-inch steel plating on the top and lower shelves. A recessed chop saw sits flush with the tabletop, and salvaged rollers help move steel through cutting operations. The center stores a plasma cutter, stick welder, oxy-acetylene torch, clamps, cords, and welding leads. The reported setup also had hard-wired 220-volt access.
Nelson was considering a fold-out downdraft unit for welding fumes when the article was published; it was not described as installed. Plan appropriate fume control, electrical work, hot-work protection, and safe separation of equipment when laying out a metalworking station.

What to assess before adapting a build
These projects are useful starting points for thinking through shop workflow, but the source descriptions do not provide independent engineering certification, load ratings, complete safety specifications, or a current code review. Treat the reported dimensions and materials as features of individual builds, not universal construction instructions.
- Space and access: Check footprint, aisle width, door clearances, turning radius, wall access, and room for loading or unloading materials.
- Loads and support: Account for the weight and distribution of tools, steel, tanks, and equipment; assess floors, wheels, bracing, anchoring, and stability.
- Handling method: Decide how materials will be lifted and reached. A tall rack that depends on a forklift requires compatible equipment and safe access.
- Shop hazards: Plan for spills and waste oil in a lubrication area, and for electrical, cutting, welding, and fume-control needs in a metalworking center.
- Design review: Get competent, site-specific help where structural capacity, electrical installation, or regulated materials are involved.
Plans and further reading
Successful Farming’s Top shop plans page lists the enclosed lubrication center, super-size tool bench, vertical rack, and metal center on wheels. The listing is separate from the build descriptions, so check the plan details before assuming they cover a particular adaptation.
Josh Volk’s Build Your Own Farm Tools is a 208-page 2021 softcover describing 15 plans for small-farm tools. The retailer says each project includes its purpose, time commitment, skill level, and required equipment; examples include seedling benches, a mini barrel washer, a germination chamber, and a rolling pack table. It is relevant further reading, but it is not identified as the source of plans for these four shop implements. See the publisher’s book page.
