Four flowering cherries worth comparing are ‘Kwanzan’, Sargent cherry, Higan cherry and ‘Accolade’. They differ in blossom color and form, mature size and silhouette, so the right choice depends on your available space, soil drainage and local conditions—not a universal “best” ranking. Check regional hardiness guidance and confirm the cultivar is available from a nursery serving your area before buying.
Compare four flowering cherry trees
The descriptions below draw on U.S. extension guidance and a botanic-garden profile. Mature height figures are not a substitute for checking a tree’s expected spread and site suitability where you live.
| Tree | Flowers and form | Size and site notes | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| ‘Kwanzan’ (also spelled ‘Kanzan’) | Double pink flowers; upright, vase-shaped habit. | Virginia Cooperative Extension says it stays under 30 feet. NC State Extension reports 20 to 30 petals per blossom for ‘Kanzan’. | You want showy double-pink blossoms and an upright tree. NC State Extension profile; Virginia Cooperative Extension flowering-tree guide. |
| Sargent cherry | Deep-pink single flowers; dense, upright growth. | Virginia Cooperative Extension gives a mature height of up to 50 feet. Its foliage emerges bronze, turns green in summer and red in fall. | You have room for a larger tree and value seasonal foliage as well as deep-pink flowers. Virginia Cooperative Extension flowering-tree guide. |
| Higan cherry | Light-pink flowers, single or double; rounded form, with a popular weeping form. | Virginia Cooperative Extension describes it as reaching 30 feet. Verify the form and expected mature size of the tree offered by your nursery. | You are looking for a rounded or weeping silhouette and can confirm local performance. Virginia Cooperative Extension flowering-tree guide. |
| ‘Accolade’ | Dark-pink buds open to soft-pink, semi-double flowers; open, airy crown. | University of Washington Botanic Gardens says it grows to about 25 feet. | You prefer softer pink blossoms and a less dense crown. University of Washington Botanic Gardens. |
These sources give more useful distinctions in color, flower form, shape and height than in bloom duration or fragrance. They do not establish a reliable winner among these four for either trait.
Choose for the planting site, not just the blossom
Check sun and drainage
For Japanese flowering cherry, NC State Extension recommends full sun, moist, well-drained loamy soil and good air circulation. It says the species does not tolerate poorly drained soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension puts the drainage warning plainly: “Cherries will not tolerate wet soils.” Flowering cherries can decline in poor or heavy soils, so avoid a persistently wet location and consult local extension guidance about soil and care in your region.

Allow for the mature tree
Compare the expected mature height and spread with the space available, not just the size of the nursery tree. The figures in the table differ by source and cultivar; a local nursery or extension service can help confirm the dimensions and form of the specific plant being sold.
Think about care and lifespan
NC State Extension gives Japanese flowering cherry a general average lifespan of 15 to 20 years. That is a species-level figure, not a forecast for an individual cultivar or garden. The same profile notes possible insect pests and diseases, as well as trunk splitting and damage to thin bark. Virginia Cooperative Extension also highlights pruning, fertilization and borer control as care considerations. For a planting plan, use local extension advice rather than assuming one schedule suits every climate.

What disease resistance can—and cannot—tell you
No cultivar should be treated as disease-proof. In an August 2025 response, Maryland Extension said its plant pathologist was not aware of local research identifying flowering cherry cultivars with reliable brown-rot resistance in Maryland. That is a Maryland-specific statement about the available local research, not proof that every cultivar is equally susceptible in every region.
Regional observations also need context. In an April 17, 2023 Ask Extension response, Michigan State University Extension Senior Horticulture Educator Rebecca Finneran called Higan cherry “quite reliable” in a discussion of hardiness in Michigan. The same exchange described Okame cherries removed from a Grand Rapids display garden after bacterial canker made them unsightly. These observations are not controlled comparisons and do not establish a general disease ranking or guaranteed lifespan.

Questions to answer before you buy
- What are the recommended hardiness range and growing conditions for your location?
- Does the planting spot get full sun, drain well and allow good air circulation?
- Will the tree’s mature height, spread and shape fit the available space?
- Is the nursery tree correctly identified as the cultivar and form you want?
- What disease problems are common locally, and what does your regional extension service say about them?
Local hardiness guidance matters because extension recommendations are regional. Confirm the tree’s identity, expected mature dimensions, shipping region and suitability with a local nursery before ordering; current inventory and shipping availability vary.
