Some plant-derived compounds change rodent behavior in experiments, but those results do not show that planting mint, lavender, rosemary, or other herbs will keep mice away. For an active mouse problem, focus on blocking entry, removing food and nesting materials, and using traps.
Do plants repel mice?
Not reliably, based on the available evidence. A systematic review of 54 publications found that some essential-oil and terpenoid compounds produced strong effects in laboratory studies, but outcomes varied across species and settings, including laboratory, enclosure, and field studies. The review also noted that relatively few plant-derived repellents were registered. These findings concern particular compounds and test conditions—not ordinary garden plantings around a house. A semi-natural enclosure study found that four plant-secondary-metabolite treatments reduced visits by house mice and common voles to treated boxes. The authors called for further investigation under more natural conditions. The treatments were not four garden plants, and the study does not establish that planting herbs outdoors will prevent an infestation. 2017 enclosure study
Why the familiar herb claims fall short
Peppermint and other aromatic plantings
Strong-smelling plants may sound like an easy deterrent, but Washington State University Extension says popular claims about mint and other aromatic companion plants have not been borne out by field research on pest-repelling plantings. Volatile compounds dissipate in open air. This is broader companion-plant guidance, not a mouse-specific field trial, so it is context rather than proof about any one herb. Lavender and thyme oils
One study added essential oils to cereal-based bait for wild house mice. Bergamot oil reduced bait intake, while lavender and thyme oils had no effect on diet in that experiment. It tested concentrated oils mixed into bait—not living plants, sprigs, or oils placed around a home. Odors are not dependable prevention
North Carolina State Extension acknowledges some evidence that certain odors can repel mice, but cautions that repellents are not reliable for mouse management or prevention. What to do if you have signs of mice
Droppings, gnaw marks, or repeated indoor sightings call for exclusion and control rather than a new planting. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) recommends addressing openings and removing the food and shelter that can sustain rodents.
- Seal entry points. Check for cracks and crevices larger than a quarter inch, and close them. Use door sweeps and weather stripping where needed.
- Remove food sources. Store food, pet food, and birdseed in durable containers. Avoid leaving accessible food out.
- Reduce shelter. Clear clutter and nesting materials that provide hiding places or nesting sites.
- Use traps early when mice are active indoors. NPIC recommends introducing traps early and notes that an individual trap may not succeed. Traps are a control measure, not a repellent.
- Seek professional help for a difficult problem. A pest-management professional may be appropriate when the infestation persists or is hard to address. NPIC: Mice and NPIC: Rodents
Be cautious with rodenticides
Rodenticides can pose risks to children, pets, and wildlife that are not the target pest. EPA says consumer rodenticide products must use secured bait stations and meet other restrictions. If you consider a pesticide, follow the current product label and authoritative local guidance; do not treat poison as a casual substitute for exclusion and trapping.
