4 Tips for Caring for Rhododendrons in Fall

Four practical fall steps for established rhododendrons: check soil moisture, avoid routine late fertilizer, mulch carefully, and limit winter exposure.

To prepare established rhododendrons for winter, check soil moisture, skip routine late-season fertilizer, refresh mulch without piling it against stems, and reduce exposure to drying wind and sun. Timing and mulch depth vary by climate and extension guidance, so use local recommendations rather than a single calendar rule.

1. Water according to soil conditions

Rhododendron leaves can lose water during sunny or windy winter weather, while frozen soil limits how much water roots can absorb. A plant entering winter very dry may be more vulnerable to injury, but keeping poorly drained soil saturated can also cause problems.

Check the soil and consider recent rainfall, drainage, and the timing of local freezes. During an extended dry spell, give the root zone a deep watering before the ground freezes; avoid repeated irrigation if the soil is already wet. New Hampshire Extension recommends continuing fall watering until temperatures drop below 40°F, while Nebraska and Missouri guidance cautions against excessive fall irrigation and recommends watering after a killing frost only when fall has been unusually dry. These are regional recommendations, not a universal schedule.

Leaves that curl or droop in cold weather may be responding protectively to water loss. Winter injury may not become clear until spring.

2. Avoid routine late-season fertilizer

Late fertilizer can encourage growth that is vulnerable to winter damage, but extension recommendations do not agree on one cutoff date. New Hampshire Extension advises against fertilizing after mid-September; Nebraska and Missouri guidance gives an earlier cutoff of July 1; a WSU Extension-hosted guide recommends fall feeding after flowering and following the product label.

For established plants, skip a routine fall feeding unless local extension advice or a soil test indicates a need. Do not treat any one of these dates as a rule for every region or cultivar.

3. Refresh mulch, but keep it off the stems

A loose layer of coarse organic mulch, such as wood chips, can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Refresh it in late fall if needed, spreading it over the root zone while leaving the plant’s base and main stems uncovered.

Published depth recommendations differ: New Hampshire Extension recommends at least 2 inches, Rutgers NJAES says loose coarse mulch should be no deeper than 3 inches, and a WSU-hosted guide recommends at least 4 inches. Follow guidance for your region and site rather than combining these figures into a universal depth.

4. Reduce exposure to winter wind and sun

Cold wind and bright winter sun can increase water loss from evergreen leaves when frozen ground prevents roots from replacing it. When choosing a planting site, a partially shaded, sheltered position can reduce exposure. Cultivar hardiness matters too; for example, NC State’s guidance for the PJM group favors partial shade and protection from strong winds.

If an established plant is in an exposed location or has a history of winter injury, a loose burlap screen or similar windbreak may help. Do not tightly wrap the plant, and do not assume every well-sited rhododendron needs a constructed barrier.

What to do about winter damage

Wait until spring growth begins before pruning branches that may have been damaged. Some branches can recover; if a branch still appears dead, check for green beneath a light scrape of bark and remove it only when new growth makes the damage clear. Nebraska Extension also recommends pruning winter damage in spring after growth starts.
