For edible gardens, check treatment markings and reject pallets with unknown origins or signs of contamination. The ideas below are concepts to adapt, not tested construction plans; inspect and prepare each pallet before building.
Choose a project that fits your space and purpose
Start with what the project needs to do. A wall-mounted planter saves ground space, while a raised garden structure occupies it. Seating requires a sound, stable build and secure fastenings. For any project that will grow food, the pallet’s markings and known history matter more than its appearance or finish.
| Project direction | Best suited to | Space and build considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Herb planter | Herbs or ornamental planting | Can be adapted to the pallet’s dimensions; a liner is used in some tutorials. Cutting and fastening may be needed. |
| Vertical or pocket garden | Planting where ground space is limited | Uses a vertical footprint. Choose the location and intended plants before deciding how to secure or fill it. |
| Raised bed or garden structure | Ground-level planting or garden organization | Needs ground area and careful material selection, especially for edible crops. |
| Bench or outdoor seating | Garden seating | Requires sound pallets, secure connections, and an assessment of stability; the example below is not load-tested. |
These categories support the 33 concepts that follow. They are variations and starting points, not 33 independently tested plans. Check dimensions, condition, intended use, tools, and weather exposure before committing to a build.
33 pallet garden and furniture ideas
Planters and edible gardens
- Lined herb planter: Adapt a pallet into a compartmented planter and line the planting area, following a tutorial such as Bunnings’ lined herb planter guide.
- Cut-to-size herb planter: Use the approach in Auburn University’s pallet planter tutorial as a starting point, adjusting cuts to the pallet’s actual dimensions.
- Kitchen-herb wall garden: Place a suitable planter near an accessible outdoor cooking area; confirm the pallet is appropriate if growing edible herbs.
- Balcony herb garden: Use a vertical arrangement when floor area is limited, and check that the chosen location and attachment can support the completed planter.
- Compact pocket garden: Create planting pockets between boards for a small-space display; a liner does not make contaminated or uncertain wood safe.
- Vertical salad garden: Use a pallet as a vertical planting structure only when its treatment and prior use are suitable for food crops.
- Strawberry planter: Adapt a pocket-style layout for strawberries, keeping the same material-screening rules used for other edible plants.
- Succulent display: Repurpose a pallet for ornamental succulents, using a stable position and suitable planting containers or compartments.
- Flowering pocket garden: Fill a vertical arrangement with ornamental flowers for a wall or fence-side display.
- Tiered planter: Arrange planter sections at different heights to make the planting easier to see and reach.
- Seedling station: Use pallet boards to organize small containers for starting plants; keep containers removable for watering and cleaning.
- Small container stand: Turn a pallet into a simple support for pots, checking that boards and joints are sound before loading it.
Garden structures and storage
- Raised garden structure: Use pallet wood as part of a ground-level garden structure only after checking its markings, history, and condition if it will hold edible crops.
- Ornamental raised bed: Reserve a pallet with uncertain history for a non-food ornamental planting project rather than a vegetable bed.
- Potting bench: Reuse boards to make a work surface for potting containers; assess the structure for stability and protect it appropriately if it stays outdoors.
- Garden tool organizer: Mount or repurpose pallet boards to hold lightweight tools, securing the organizer to a suitable support.
- Long-handled tool rack: Arrange boards as a simple rack for garden tools, fastening them securely and checking for protruding nails.
- Potting-supplies shelf: Use a pallet section as open storage for pots and supplies; keep heavy items off any structure that has not been assessed for the load.
- Garden sign backing: Turn a board or pallet section into a backing for a garden label or decorative sign.
- Compost-area screen: Arrange pallet sections as a screen around a compost area, securing them so they cannot shift or topple.
- Garden divider: Use a pallet as a visual divider between areas, with a stable placement suited to the site.
- Climbing-plant support: Repurpose a pallet as a trellis-like support for ornamental climbers, checking that its attachment is secure.
- Pot display backdrop: Stand a pallet behind a group of containers as a decorative backdrop rather than using it as a food-growing surface.
- Outdoor potting station organizer: Combine a work surface with simple storage for frequently used pots and supplies, adapting the layout to available space.
Outdoor seating and furniture
- Simple pallet bench: One example stacks two pallets for a base and secures a third as the back. It is not a load-tested design: assess the materials, connections, and stability before anyone sits on it.
- Low garden seat: Use a sound pallet as the basis for a low seat, securing components and checking for sharp edges and protruding fasteners.
- Bench with removable cushions: Add outdoor cushions for comfort and store them when the weather is poor.
- Pair of garden seats: Create two matching simple seats from suitable materials, checking each one independently for stability.
- Outdoor coffee table: Adapt a pallet into a low table for a seating area, smoothing rough edges and securing any added components.
- Side table for a patio: Use a smaller pallet section as a side table, keeping the design simple and checking that it stands evenly.
- Planter-and-seat arrangement: Place a planter beside a separate pallet seat to combine planting and seating without relying on the planter as a structural part of the seat.
- Outdoor lounge platform: Arrange suitable pallets as a low platform only after checking the build’s stability and securing the pieces together.
- Garden dining bench: Adapt the bench concept for a dining area, but do not assume a pallet arrangement is safe to sit on without assessing its materials and construction.
Check pallet markings and history before using wood for food
For vegetable beds, herb planters, or other edible planting, do not select a pallet by appearance alone. NC State Extension explains that common markings have different meanings: HT means heat treated for pest control; DB means debarked; KD means kiln dried, which does not necessarily mean the wood reached the same temperature as an HT treatment; and MB indicates methyl-bromide treatment. NC State advises against using MB-marked pallets in vegetable gardens. See the NC State Extension vegetable gardening guidance.

University of Saskatchewan’s Pallet Gardens guide also advises looking for HT and not using MB-marked pallets for food production. University of Maryland Extension’s April 29, 2025 answer, “Planting in Pallets,” relays NC State guidance to reject pallets without origin and treatment information when choosing wood for vegetable gardens.
An HT mark describes a treatment, not everything that happened to the pallet afterward. The University of Florida IFAS activity “Building & Planting a Pallet Garden” cautions that recycled wood could have been exposed to contaminants after treatment. Reject pallets with unknown origins or use for food-growing projects, and avoid boards with signs of spills or contamination. A liner, paint, or decorative finish does not establish that uncertain wood is safe.

Prepare the pallet before building
- Inspect both sides and the edges. Look for protruding nails, staples, splintering, damaged boards, and signs of spills or contamination. Do not use questionable wood for food-growing projects.
- Check the markings and known history. For edible planting, reject an MB-marked pallet or one whose origin and treatment cannot be established.
- Remove hazards. Take out protruding nails and staples before handling or cutting boards.
- Use protection during power-tool work. Wear eye protection and a mask to limit exposure to wood dust when sawing or sanding. Penn State Extension’s pallet safety guidance covers precautions for working with pallets.
- Sand rough edges. Smooth areas likely to cause splinters, especially on seating and surfaces people will handle.
- Fit the build to the material. Measure the pallet and adapt cuts and fastenings to its dimensions and condition; do not assume every pallet is the same.
Account for rain, sun, and outdoor use
Pallets are not necessarily made for long-term outdoor exposure. For furniture that stays outside seasonally, exterior stain, varnish, or paint are options mentioned by Ideal Home’s outdoor furniture ideas article. The source does not establish the performance or lifespan of a particular finish, so choose a product intended for the material and exposure rather than assuming one coating guarantees durability. Removable cushions can be stored when weather is poor.
A liner or weed-control fabric can be part of a planter design, as in the Bunnings herb planter tutorial, but it is not a substitute for selecting appropriate, uncontaminated wood. Plan placement and access to water before filling a planter or securing a vertical garden.
