Beginner Houseplants: Choose the Right Plant for Your Home

A successful first houseplant starts with the right spot. Compare lower-light and brighter-location options, adjust watering to the plant, and check pet safety before you buy.

The easiest houseplant to keep is one suited to the light and care you can provide. Before choosing a plant, look at the spot where it will live: a “low-light” label does not mean a plant can grow in darkness, and watering needs vary from one kind of plant to another.

Start with the light in your home

Window direction is a useful first clue, not a guarantee. North-facing windows generally provide low light, east- and west-facing windows medium light, and south-facing windows bright light when unobstructed. Trees, porches, overhangs, nearby buildings, distance from the glass, and the season can all change what reaches a plant. University of Illinois Extension’s lighting guide gives approximate reference levels of 75 foot-candles for low light, 150 for medium, and 300 for high or bright light; its window-distance estimates are practical starting points, not a substitute for assessing your room.

University of Minnesota Extension lists Chinese evergreen, cast-iron plant, ponytail palm, parlor palm, pothos, philodendron, snake plant, peace lily, arrowhead plant, and ZZ plant among options for lower-light conditions. These plants still need some light to grow. Leggy or stretched growth, pale leaves, or leaf drop can point to insufficient light, although watering problems and other causes can produce similar symptoms. See the University of Minnesota Extension guide to indoor lighting.

Houseplants to consider by growing conditions

The plants below are candidates named in university Extension guidance, not a guarantee that every plant will suit every beginner or every home. Use the light information to narrow your choices, then check the individual plant’s care requirements before buying.

For lower-light spots

  • Cast-iron plant, Chinese evergreen, ponytail palm, parlor palm, snake plant, peace lily, arrowhead plant, and ZZ plant: listed by University of Minnesota Extension as options for lower-light conditions.
  • Pothos and philodendron: also listed as lower-light candidates, though both grow best in bright, indirect light according to Illinois Extension. Low light may also reduce pothos variegation.
  • Dracaena, English ivy, and lady palm: additional plants named in Illinois Extension’s low-light guidance. Check the particular plant’s requirements and pet safety before choosing.

For medium or brighter locations

  • Spider plant: Illinois Extension describes it as beginner-friendly, tolerant of lower light but needing at least some light, and a moderate-water plant. It can be propagated from offsets.
  • Hoya, or wax plant: may suit someone who prefers less frequent watering, but it needs more light than the lower-light examples.
  • Rubber plant: placed in medium light in Illinois Extension’s guidance.
  • Peperomia, bird’s-nest fern, Boston fern, asparagus fern, prayer plant, jade plant, pilea, monstera, fiddle-leaf fig, Norfolk Island pine, and bird of paradise: also named in Extension indoor-light or care guidance. Their requirements vary, so choose only after checking the conditions for the specific plant.

For more on plant-specific examples, consult Illinois Extension’s pages on pothos and philodendron, as well as its article “Gardening inside with houseplants”.

Water according to the plant and its soil

There is no reliable once-a-week schedule for every houseplant. Check the soil and adjust to the particular plant and growing conditions. Snake plants prefer drier conditions; let their soil dry completely between waterings. Pothos should dry moderately between waterings, while heartleaf philodendron should be kept minimally moist. Spider plants need moderate water, and hoyas need less frequent watering. Illinois Extension provides care information for pothos, philodendron, and other indoor plants in its houseplant guidance.

Prevent common beginner problems

  • Do not treat low light as no light. A plant may tolerate a dimmer spot without thriving in a windowless room.
  • Do not move a shade-adapted plant straight into strong sun. Pothos, philodendrons, and ferns can scorch when exposed too quickly to stronger sunlight.
  • Check more than one possible cause when leaves look unhealthy. Stretching, pale color, or leaf drop can indicate inadequate light, but watering problems can look similar.
  • Do not expect houseplants to clean a typical home’s air measurably. Illinois Extension says the effect is unlikely to be measurable under real-world home conditions.

For additional guidance on choosing plants for dim interiors, see Illinois Extension’s article on low-light houseplants.

Check pet safety before bringing a plant home

Pothos, peace lily, philodendron, Chinese evergreen, and dumbcane contain insoluble calcium oxalates. If chewed or swallowed, they can irritate the mouth and digestive tract; possible signs include drooling, retching, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe swelling or breathing difficulty warrants veterinary attention. The ASPCA also identifies calla lily as a plant containing these crystals. See the ASPCA’s houseplant safety guidance.

Snake plants can be mildly toxic to pets that chew them. Illinois Extension also notes that spider plants and fiddle-leaf figs are mildly toxic to dogs and cats. If you have pets, verify the exact plant against a current authoritative source before buying it, and contact a veterinarian if your animal eats a potentially toxic plant.

Make a shortlist that fits your space

  1. Choose the actual spot for the plant and estimate its light, accounting for obstructions and seasonal changes.
  2. Rule out plants whose light needs do not fit that location.
  3. Compare the remaining plants’ soil-drying preferences with how often you can check and water them.
  4. If pets may reach the plant, confirm its safety before bringing it home.
  5. After purchase, follow care guidance for that plant rather than applying a universal schedule.
