You can give a bathroom an Art Deco feel without rebuilding it as a period room. Start with one strong cue—geometric tile, a shaped mirror, reeded glass or polished metal—then repeat its lines or finish selectively. The ideas below range from low-commitment accessories to fixed surfaces and fixtures, so you can choose a look that suits the room and the scale of the work.

Start with the room’s strongest visual cue

Art Deco-inspired bathrooms often draw on geometry, repetition, contrast and deliberate material choices. There is no single required palette or checklist: a high-contrast floor, a fan-shaped mirror or a fluted glass detail can each establish the direction. Choose one feature to lead and let the others support it.

1. Lay a geometric floor pattern

Use a repeated geometric layout to establish the style at floor level. Keep the wall treatment simpler if the floor is already the room’s main pattern.

2. Make black and white the graphic feature

Build contrast into the tile, grout or both. A monochrome scheme can feel crisp and architectural without requiring multiple decorative motifs.

Kelly Miller 24"x36" Gold Foil Scalloped Edge Decorative Vanity Wall Mirror
  • GOLD FOIL FINISH. The mirror has a hand-applied gold foil finish. Its inherently textured detailing provides the mirror with unique character and charm. Whether you're using it as a wall art, vanity mirror or bathroom mirror, the large surface area allows it to brighten and expand any space it occupies. This mirror is also a perfect choice for your farmhouse makeover, fireplace mantle or bedroom furniture upgrade.
  • HIGH QUALITY. The mirror is comprised of a 12mm thick FSC-certified engineered wood inlaid with clean understated lines and a 4mm thick silver coated glass mirror. The solid and sturdy back board can support and protect the glass mirror, so it is difficult to break. Silver mirrors are characterized with clear, natural images and neutral reflection, which can stand out from many other mirror products even from a distance. Each piece of mirror in each section is bevelled and high-end.
  • UNTIQUE DESIGN. If your want some intricacies/interest to the pattern - not just a simple round or rectangle, this mirror will definitely be your perfect choice. Its sophisticated cutout corner accents along the inner and outer edges of the frame complete the look with added decorative detail. It will be a beautiful addition to any wall and an essential element in your home decor.
  • EASY TO HANG. French cleat is used to make the mirror very easy to hang on the wall. A strong and sturdy hanger cleat is already fixed on the mirror back. You just need to mount another aluminium hanger into the wall, and you can easily choose to hang your mirror vertically or horizontally. The package also includes 2 flathead wood screws with plastic anchors. It will take you no more than 10 minutes to finish the whole installation.
  • HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE. This mirror is a great gift for family members. Suprise your wife with this beautiful atistic statement piece, and you will not regret for your choice! This mirror can also make a perfect gift for women friends on Birthdays, Christmas, housewarming and Mother's Day.

3. Add a small mosaic focal point

A mosaic floor detail or border can bring in pattern without covering every surface. Give the decorative area visual breathing room with a quieter tile field nearby.

4. Emphasize repetition with a stacked tile layout

Repeated tile shapes or a consistent layout make the room feel orderly and geometric. This is a subtler way to introduce Deco character than adding another bold print.

5. Use colored wall tile

Rich wall tile can provide an alternative to an all-neutral room. Let its color carry the scheme, then coordinate the metal finish and other accents around it.

6. Frame a tile field with a contrasting border

A narrow line of contrasting tile can give a larger, simpler surface a defined edge. Repeat the line only where it helps the room feel connected rather than busy.

7. Let one patterned surface lead

Choose a single wall, floor or other surface for a prominent pattern and keep nearby finishes calmer. A clear hierarchy helps separate the focal point from the supporting details.

8. Introduce fluted or reeded texture

Reeded glass or another vertically textured surface adds rhythm and depth without bringing in another print. It can also echo the repeated lines elsewhere in the room.

9. Use reflective finishes selectively

Polished metal and reflective surfaces can reinforce light and material contrast. Choose a few deliberate points of shine instead of applying a metallic finish to every visible detail.

10. Pair patterned tile with a plain field

Set a decorative tile area against a simpler surface so the pattern stays legible. This works especially well when the tile is the room’s main statement.

Choose a palette and metal finish that work together

High contrast and richer colors are both viable directions. Decide whether you want a cool, graphic effect or a warmer, more saturated room, then repeat the palette intentionally. Brass is not the only Deco-inspired option: polished chrome or stainless steel can suit a cooler scheme. Homes & Gardens quotes designer Jacu Strauss on the flexibility of metal choices in Art Deco design: When it comes to metals, Art Deco is a lot more flexible than one might think, and utilized cutting-edge materials of the time, Homes & Gardens.

11. Build around black and white

Use black and white as the main contrast in tile or other finishes. This gives geometric details a clear visual role.

12. Add deep green or blue

A rich green or blue can provide color against contrasting tile and metal details. Keep the surrounding palette deliberate so the accent looks integrated rather than incidental.

13. Choose one dominant metal finish

Coordinate the visible hardware and lighting around one primary finish. That does not require every metal object to match, but a consistent dominant choice helps the room feel composed.

14. Use polished chrome or stainless steel

Choose a cooler polished metal for a streamlined effect. These finishes are alternatives to brass, not departures from a Deco-inspired scheme.

15. Use brass as a warm accent

Brass can warm up a room with strong geometry, particularly when used in fittings or smaller details. Let the tile and other materials determine how much of it the room needs.

16. Mix contemporary and period-inspired details

Use modern fixtures with a few references to Deco geometry, texture or material. The room can evoke the style without making every element a literal period reproduction.

17. Repeat one motif in several places

Echo a fan, arch or geometric line in two or three locations, such as the mirror and tile. Repeating one motif is usually more coherent than layering unrelated patterns.

Give a fixture or mirror the focal role

A mirror, vanity, shower screen or sculptural basin can carry much of the room’s character. If you select a strong silhouette, keep nearby patterns and accessories more restrained.

18. Make the mirror the focal point

A shaped or handmade mirror can bring a distinct Deco cue without changing the room’s fixed finishes. It is one of the more contained ways to establish a focal point.

19. Try a fan-shaped or sunburst mirror

Use a fan or sunburst mirror as a single statement, with simpler details around it. The shape can repeat the geometry of the room without requiring a matching pattern on every surface.

20. Anchor the room with a sculptural vanity

A black or otherwise strongly silhouetted vanity can ground a lighter scheme. Keep the surrounding wall and floor treatments from competing with its shape.

21. Soften angular geometry with a curved or arched shower screen

A curved or arched profile can balance a room built around straight tile lines. Confirm that the chosen screen suits the layout and installation conditions.

22. Add architectural lines with a metal-framed shower enclosure

A metal frame can echo the room’s geometry and connect with its chosen hardware finish. Check the product’s dimensions and installation requirements before committing.

23. Coordinate faucets and hardware with the palette

Brass, chrome and polished stainless are all possible choices. Select the finish that complements the room’s colors and use it consistently across the most visible fittings.

24. Make a basin or bath form the statement

An unusual basin or bath silhouette can become the focal point. Give its form room to stand out by controlling the pattern and decoration nearby.

Use lighting and finishing details to complete the look

Lighting and smaller details can repeat the room’s geometry without forcing a full renovation. For actual bathroom fixtures and finishes, check the product’s instructions and suitability for the intended location.

25. Place sconces symmetrically beside a mirror

A pair of wall sconces can emphasize symmetry around a mirror. Homes & Gardens attributes this guidance to Jamie Watkins, co-founder of Divine Savages: Wall sconces with frosted shades and symmetry on either side of a mirror can reinforce the deco look without overwhelming the other elements, Homes & Gardens.

26. Choose frosted or reeded glass in lighting

Textured glass introduces a period-inspired detail while softening the fixture’s appearance. Confirm the light’s bathroom rating and permitted placement for the installation.

28. Use Deco-inspired wallpaper for a powder-room refresh

Wallpaper can deliver a bold motif without changing tile or fixtures, particularly in a powder room. Check the specific product’s bathroom suitability and installation guidance rather than assuming all wallpaper is appropriate for wet or humid areas. Sanctuary Bathrooms suggests pairing wallpaper in typical bathroom applications with a more durable lower-wall finish.

29. Keep wallpaper above a durable lower-wall finish

Tile or paneling below wallpaper can create a practical division of materials in typical applications. The suitable placement depends on the room and the wallpaper manufacturer’s instructions.

30. Repeat the palette in a few accessories

Choose a small number of accessories that pick up the room’s colors and metal finish. Treat these as finishing details, not as a substitute for materials appropriate to bathroom exposure.

31. Edit before adding another motif

Step back before introducing another fan shape, metallic finish or bold pattern. A few related geometric details can feel more intentional than several competing statements.

Pick the right level of commitment

The best route depends on how much change you want to make. A mirror or accessories are easier to change than fixed tile or fixtures; a dominant pattern or wallpaper makes a stronger statement than a small accent. Choose the commitment level before choosing how many motifs to use.

  • Low commitment: add a shaped mirror, lighting or a few palette-matched accessories.
  • Moderate commitment: introduce a feature border, a small mosaic, colored wall tile or wallpaper in an appropriate location.
  • Higher commitment: make floor tile, a vanity or a shower enclosure the room’s defining feature.

For any of these routes, one repeated motif and a coordinated metal finish can help connect the elements without making the room feel overworked.

Check heritage considerations before altering an older bathroom

If the property or bathroom may be historic, find out whether the building or particular features have heritage significance before removing or covering anything. Historic England notes that some work may require consent and that new pipes or equipment can affect historic fabric; original fittings or tiles may be significant in a listed property. Its guidance applies to the UK, so check the relevant heritage and consent rules where the property is located: Historic England: Bathrooms.
