Three useful workbench upgrades address everyday shop needs: a mounted power strip brings outlets closer to the work, a bench vise improves work holding, and an under-bench paper-roll holder protects the top during messy jobs. Before choosing any of them, check how your existing bench is built and where each accessory will fit.
Add power within reach
A mountable workbench power strip can keep outlets close to tools and chargers. WOOD Magazine recommends checking the cord length against the distance to a wall outlet, confirming that the outlet count suits your needs, and checking whether the strip provides surge blocking. The feature does not specify electrical load ratings or recommend particular models, so verify a product’s specifications for your intended use.
Many power strips have mounting holes in the back panel. Mount the strip where its outlets are convenient, then route its cord beneath the bench so it cannot catch on drawers or be damaged. Keep the cord path in mind before fastening the strip in place.
Improve work holding with a bench vise
A bench vise holds work securely while you cut, shape, or assemble it. WOOD Magazine notes that a good-quality vise can handle most work-holding demands, but the right style and mounting position depend on your bench and the work you do.

Before buying, check the mounting requirements against the bench’s construction and available clearance; the feature does not name a universal mounting method or model.
Install an under-bench paper-roll holder
A paper-roll holder lets you cover the work surface for dirty jobs and replace the paper when it gets soiled. The WOOD Magazine example uses a 30-inch-wide metal holder beneath an overhanging bench top. The bench needs a suitable overhang and enough clearance below it for the holder and roll.

Fit the holder to the bench
Check the holder’s width against the available mounting area, and make sure the roll can turn without hitting the bench or anything below it. The example’s dimensions and hardware are specific to that arrangement, not a universal fit for every holder.
Mount the holder
- Make a mounting block from a 2×8.
- Center the metal holder on the block and mark its mounting holes.
- Drill countersunk pilot holes, then attach the holder to the block with #8 × 1¼-inch panhead screws.
- Center the block beneath the bench overhang and attach it to the bench. Confirm the holder and roll have adequate clearance.
- Insert the paper roll according to the holder manufacturer’s instructions.
Choose the upgrades that fit your shop
Each upgrade solves a different problem. A power strip helps when tools or chargers are inconveniently far from an outlet; a vise helps when work needs to be held steady; and a paper holder is useful when jobs regularly soil the bench. Check the bench’s layout and the accessory’s mounting needs before committing to a location.
