You do not need a particular number of square feet to create a workable home office. The right setup depends on your tasks, body, equipment, storage, privacy, and the room you have—including space to move your chair. These 21 small office ideas help you make a compact bedroom, apartment, shared living area, or alcove more practical without assuming that a small desk or a particular chair is automatically ergonomic.

Start with the space and work you actually have

Before choosing furniture, consider what your work requires: a laptop or larger display, paperwork, calls, storage, and how long you sit at a time. You also need room to get in and out of the chair, reach your equipment, and pass through the area safely. A Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) workstation example gives dimensions of 42–52 by 60–72 inches (107–132 by 152–183 cm), but those are planning references attributed to a 1979 interior-design book—not a universal home-office minimum. CCOHS notes that space needs vary and that standards for specific situations are limited. Its page also summarizes a 72-square-foot (6.7-square-metre) Manitoba standard for staff workstations; that is an organizational planning standard, not a requirement for a home office. CCOHS guidance on office space requirements.

1. Measure the whole working area

Measure the proposed desk location and the space needed to pull the chair back, open doors, and walk past. Include equipment and storage in your sketch. A desk that fits against a wall may still make the room awkward if the chair blocks a route.

2. Try an underused corner

A corner can make use of otherwise empty floor area and orient your work away from household activity. Check that the chair can move freely and that you can reach outlets and supplies without twisting or stretching.

3. Choose a compact desk that fits the task

A compact computer desk can help when floor space is tight, but its surface still needs to support the equipment and work you use. Allow space for the keyboard and mouse to sit close together, with frequently used items within easy reach. A narrow surface that forces awkward wrist positions or constant clearing may not be a useful trade.

4. Compare a folding desk with a fixed surface

A folding or wall-mounted work surface can free floor area when you are not working. Compare it with a fixed desk by checking stability, installation permissions, where the desk and chair go when folded, and how much daily setup it adds. Do not use a surface that wobbles or cannot safely support your work equipment.

5. Repurpose a table only if its fit works

A spare table may avoid buying another piece of furniture, but check its height, depth, stability, and chair clearance. CCOHS notes that kitchen tables are often too high for good keyboard and mouse positioning. If you must use one, adjust your seating and input-device positions as well as you can rather than assuming the table is a suitable desk. CCOHS guidance for telework and working from home.

6. Use a closet or alcove selectively

A closet or alcove may provide a defined work zone, but it should not compromise ventilation, lighting, safe access, or comfortable temperature. Make sure the door and surrounding circulation remain usable, and do not treat an enclosed nook as an improvement if it leaves you working in poor conditions.

Make a small workstation easier to use

7. Put infrequently used supplies on vertical shelves

Wall shelves can move reference materials and occasional-use supplies off the desktop. Keep heavy or frequently handled items at a safe, comfortable reach; using vertical space should not mean repeatedly reaching overhead or twisting to retrieve essentials.

8. Keep only current work on the desk

Store spare paper, supplies, and equipment elsewhere so the work surface stays available for the task at hand. A clear surface makes it easier to keep the keyboard and mouse near you and to avoid reaching around piles.

9. Use closed storage when the room has another job

A drawer unit, cabinet, or storage box can hide work materials in a bedroom or shared living area and make it easier to reset the space. Check that drawers open fully without blocking your chair or a walkway. Open storage gives faster access and visibility; closed storage can reduce visual clutter.

10. Raise the laptop or monitor to a workable viewing height

NIOSH says a separate monitor is generally best positioned about an arm’s length away, with its top at or below eye level. A stable stand—or a temporary book or box—can raise a screen, but a raised laptop should be paired with a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen and input devices can be positioned independently. A laptop stand is a space-saving option; an external monitor may offer a larger viewing area but takes more room. NIOSH guidance on optimizing a work-from-home environment.

11. Keep the keyboard and mouse close

Place input devices where you can use them with relaxed shoulders and wrists as neutral as practical. Frequently used items such as a notebook or phone should be near enough to avoid repeated reaching, without crowding the keyboard or mouse. CCOHS recommends arranging the workstation to reduce awkward reaches and twisting.

12. Route cables out of the way

Use cable organizers or clips to keep chargers and cords away from feet, chair wheels, and walkways. Leave enough slack for devices to be connected safely, but do not let cables cross a route where someone could trip.

13. Select a chair for your body and setup

Choose a chair based on its fit to you, the desk, and the work—not the label or size alone. If possible, try its adjustability and check whether you can sit supported while keeping your feet stable and your input devices comfortably positioned. A chair cannot correct every problem with desk height, screen placement, or reach. See CCOHS guidance on ergonomic chairs.

14. Support your feet if they do not reach comfortably

If your seating position leaves your feet unsupported, a footrest can help; a stable household object may serve as a temporary support. Make sure it does not slide, obstruct movement, or force your knees into an uncomfortable position.

Control light, sound, and shared-room distractions

15. Set the screen at a right angle to windows

Position the display perpendicular to a window where possible, and adjust blinds as daylight changes. This can reduce light reflecting directly off the screen. If you cannot move the desk, changing the blinds or screen angle may help manage glare.

16. Aim task lighting at the work, not the screen

An adjustable task lamp can illuminate paperwork without shining into the display. Aim it at the task surface and check for reflections from your screen and bright patches in your field of view. OSHA’s older lighting guidance gives figures tied to paper tasks and CRT-era displays; those numbers are not a universal lighting prescription for modern home offices. Prioritize task visibility and glare control. OSHA workstation-environment guidance.

17. Soften harsh contrast and reflections

Diffuse or shielded room lighting and matte surfaces near the screen can help reduce reflections and sharp brightness differences. Adjust blinds and lighting when conditions change rather than relying on one fixed lamp position.

18. Create a quiet period or use headphones

If household sound is the main distraction, agree on a defined quiet period or use headphones when appropriate for your work. CCOHS identifies noise control as a home-workstation consideration, but a setup that blocks awareness of household activity may not suit every person or situation.

19. Mark a boundary in a shared room

Turn the desk toward a wall, use a screen, or establish a consistent work-only arrangement to signal when the area is in use. Keep the divider and furniture stable, preserve a clear route through the room, and avoid creating a hidden trip hazard.

Build a routine that works in a small space

20. Take brief movement and screen breaks

Plan to stand, walk, or look away from the screen during the day rather than expecting furniture alone to solve discomfort. In a 2020 bulletin about working from home, NIOSH reports reduced overall musculoskeletal discomfort and eyestrain when hourly five-minute breaks were added to conventional breaks taken twice daily; the cited passage does not give an effect-size percentage. NIOSH’s 2020 work-from-home guidance.

21. Use a start-and-end ritual

In a room that also serves as a bedroom or living area, a repeatable start and end routine can help define work time. For example, set out the day’s tools before beginning, then put work materials in a drawer or box when you finish. Choose a routine that does not add more setup than the space and schedule can support.

When the setup still feels uncomfortable

General layout ideas cannot account for every person, task, or health need. If discomfort persists or your workstation is difficult to adapt, CCOHS suggests asking whether your employer can help arrange an assessment. Review the desk, chair, screen, keyboard, mouse, lighting, and movement space together rather than assuming one new item will fix the whole setup.
