Yes—morning glory can grow in an outdoor pot if you give it full sun, free-draining soil, and a sturdy support for its twining stems. The name covers different plants, so check the seed packet: the guidance here applies to Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea tricolor. Both are grown from seed, and neither should be left sitting in water.
1. Choose seed with the plant’s name on the packet
“Morning glory” is a common name used for more than one plant. This guide covers Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea tricolor; their care overlaps, but identifying the species helps you know which plant you are growing. The Royal Horticultural Society profile for I. purpurea and its profile for I. tricolor both describe seed propagation. Look for a botanical name or named cultivar when buying seed.
2. Soak hard seeds if you want to encourage germination
For I. tricolor, University of Illinois Extension suggests soaking seed in water for 24 hours before planting. Its Hort Answers profile also describes the seed as hard and recommends nicking it and soaking it overnight. This is an optional seed-starting aid, not a guarantee of quicker or more successful germination. Follow the packet’s sowing directions for the variety you have.
3. Put the pot in full sun
Both covered species are recommended for full sun by the RHS and Illinois Extension. Choose an outdoor spot with abundant direct light. A position sheltered from cold winds can also help protect the climbing stems. See the RHS profiles for I. purpurea and I. tricolor, and Illinois Extension’s pages for I. purpurea and I. tricolor.

4. Choose a pot with open drainage
Use a container with drainage holes and a potting medium that allows excess water to escape. The covered species prefer moist but well-drained soil, and North Carolina State Extension notes that I. tricolor does not tolerate standing water. The sources cited here do not establish a species-specific minimum pot volume, so there is no authoritative exact size to prescribe. Choose a stable pot that can accommodate the plant and its support rather than relying on an unsupported litre or diameter figure. See the RHS profiles for I. purpurea and I. tricolor, and the NC State Extension profile.
5. Install a sturdy support before sowing
Morning glory is a twining vine, so give it something to climb from the start. Put the support in the pot before sowing, anchor it firmly, and choose one tall and strong enough for a vigorous vine and the conditions where the pot will stand. A bamboo framework or compact obelisk can work if it is securely fixed and offers stems a surface to twine around; these are examples, not tested product recommendations. University of Illinois Extension’s guide to growing vines in containers warns that vines can outgrow supports and become vulnerable to wind.

6. Water according to the pot’s moisture
Check the growing medium rather than following a fixed watering calendar. When watering is needed, water thoroughly so moisture reaches the bottom and excess drains from the holes. Aim to keep the medium from drying out completely, but do not leave the pot standing in water. Containers dry faster than garden soil, and the interval varies with weather, location, container, and plant stage; in warm conditions, some pots may need water more than once a day. See University of Illinois Extension’s container-watering guidance and University of Minnesota Extension’s advice on watering container plants.
7. Keep feeding modest
I. tricolor can perform well in poor soil with little or no fertilizer, and Illinois Extension notes that it prefers soil fertility kept to a minimum. Container growing conditions differ, so these sources do not establish a universal fertilizer schedule or promise that extra feeding will increase flowers. Start with an appropriate potting medium and avoid adding fertilizer routinely without a reason. See the NC State Extension profile and Illinois Extension’s Morning Glory guide.
