That is a possibility, not a lifespan guarantee: longevity depends on the plant, its site and ongoing care. Before choosing, check your region’s hardiness guidance, the bed’s sun and soil moisture, drainage, mature size and bloom period. Extension recommendations can vary by region, so confirm local suitability with your extension service or the plant label.
How to choose perennials that can stay in place
Match each plant to the conditions it will actually get, rather than choosing by flower color alone. Note how much sun reaches the bed through the day, whether water drains or lingers after rain, and how much room the plant will have at maturity. Check regional hardiness and the plant’s bloom period, too; foliage can provide garden interest outside the flowering season.
Long-lived does not mean maintenance-free. Perennials may still need watering, deadheading, staking, division or winter protection. New plantings need deep, regular watering as their roots establish. Before amending a new bed, test the soil and use the results to guide changes; frequent or excessive fertilizing can produce abundant foliage but few flowers. See Alabama Cooperative Extension’s perennial-care guidance.
8 long-living perennials for different garden conditions
1. Peony (Paeonia spp.): a sunny anchor
Peonies are the clearest example of exceptional perennial longevity in this selection. Iowa State Extension reports that 50- to 60-year-old peonies are not uncommon at older Iowa homes; that is a regional example, not a promise for every plant. Give peonies full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Illinois Extension advises planting roots no deeper than two inches and using light fertilizer. Deep planting, shade and excessive fertilizer can limit flowering, and newly planted peonies may take two to three years to establish and bloom. See Illinois Extension’s peony guide.

2. Hosta (Hosta spp.): foliage for shade
Hostas are durable, long-lived choices for partial or full shade, especially in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Their foliage comes in many forms, and flowers appear in early to midsummer. Cultivars vary greatly in size, so check the label and leave enough room for the plant to mature instead of crowding it into a narrow gap.
3. Daylily (Hemerocallis spp.): a dependable clump for sun or light shade
Daylilies tolerate a range of soils as long as drainage is good. Each flower lasts one day, but a plant can bloom over several weeks. Choose a named cultivar rather than the orange “ditch” daylily, which spreads aggressively and can be difficult to contain.

4. Siberian iris (Iris sibirica): upright form and early flowers
Siberian iris brings upright foliage and early-season flowers to a sunny bed. Unlike bearded iris, it tolerates moist conditions, making it a useful option where soil stays damper. Do not apply bearded-iris planting or division guidance to Siberian iris without checking that it fits this type.
5. False blue indigo (Baptisia australis): structure for a sunny bed
False blue indigo is a low-maintenance, long-lived choice for a sunny location, but it needs a site with room for its eventual size. Check the plant label and plan its position before planting; the cited extension guidance does not establish a guaranteed lifespan or cultivar-specific dimensions.

Care that supports a perennial’s longevity
- Choose for the site: Observe how sunlight moves across the bed and check soil moisture and drainage before selecting plants.
- Prepare soil based on a test: Use test results to guide amendments rather than applying fertilizer by default.
- Water new plants deeply and regularly: Continue while roots establish, adjusting to local weather and soil conditions.
- Give plants room: Use mature size on the plant label to avoid crowding and unnecessary division.
- Allow establishment time: Some perennials take time to settle in; peonies, in particular, may need two to three years to flower after planting.
Care needs differ among perennials. Iowa State Extension notes that bearded iris may need division to maintain flowering, while peonies can remain undisturbed for decades. That division advice is specific to bearded iris and should not be generalized to Siberian iris. Regional recommendations also differ, so use local extension guidance and plant labels alongside general lists.
