SlashGear’s December 31, 2024 roundup listed eight elliptical machines in an order it attributed to Consumer Reports, with the Sole E95S at No. 1 and the NordicTrack AirGlide 14i at No. 8. This is a historical ranking, not Consumer Reports’ current 2026 recommendation list, and the roundup did not publish a complete set of Consumer Reports scores. The specifications below are claims reported by SlashGear in 2024, not independently verified current specifications.
How to read this 2024 ranking
The order below reproduces the ranking in SlashGear’s 2024 article. It does not establish that Consumer Reports gave each machine a particular score, nor that the order remains current. Consumer Reports’ ratings overview describes comparisons of the latest exercise equipment, and search results show a separate 2026 best-ellipticals page. Consult current ratings and confirm a model’s present availability and configuration before relying on this older list.
Consumer Reports’ buying guide says ellipticals simulate a running-like motion with reduced impact on joints, and recommends trying a machine in person before buying. Its stated evaluation considerations include ergonomics, construction and user safety. A ranking cannot determine whether a particular stride, step-up height or frame will suit your body and space.

What matters when choosing an elliptical
Stride and fit
The listed stride lengths range from 18 inches on the Schwinn 411 to adjustable ranges reported for the NordicTrack AirGlide 14i and Life Fitness E5 Go and Sole E95S. Those figures are useful starting points, not a guarantee of comfort: try the machine and check whether your movement feels natural through the full pedal cycle.
Space and step-up height
A compact frame can help in a smaller room, but footprint is only one part of fit. Account for clearance around the machine and the height you must step onto it. The roundup specifically reported a 6.5-inch step-up height for the Life Fitness E1 Go; confirm that measurement for the exact version you are considering.

Resistance, incline and workout features
The models differ in whether they offer incline, how resistance is adjusted, and what programs or screen features are included. Decide which controls you will actually use, then confirm that the current model includes them. Touchscreens and interactive workouts may also involve service or subscription terms that should be checked with the seller or manufacturer.
Construction and stability
Consumer Reports says ergonomics, construction and user safety are among its evaluation considerations. Inspect the frame and moving parts, try the machine if possible, and pay attention to wobble or awkward movement. The Schwinn 430 stability concern in the roundup was based on some customer reviews, not a controlled test.
