Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Possibly—but seven years without starting it does not tell you whether it is safe or ready to run. The key questions are how it was stored, whether gasoline was left in the tank or carburetor, and what the manufacturer’s manual requires. Find the make and model before servicing or starting it. If gasoline may have sat in the fuel system, do not try to start the generator on that fuel.
What determines whether it can still run?
Age alone is not a diagnosis. A generator that was stored properly may be serviceable, while old fuel, corrosion, or damaged components can cause trouble. The make, model, fuel type, and storage history matter; without them, there is no reliable way to judge this particular unit or prescribe a restart procedure.
Start by locating the model number and getting the matching owner’s manual from the manufacturer. Fuel requirements, oil specifications, starting steps, and service procedures vary by model. Generac likewise advises owners to consult the specific manual rather than treating general troubleshooting advice as model-specific instructions.
If gasoline may have been left inside
After seven years, treat gasoline that may have remained in the tank or carburetor as stale. Do not start the generator using it. Honda warns that gasoline can deteriorate and cause starting or running problems, and that adding stabilizer will not restore stale fuel. Its guidance to drain fuel for storage beyond a year applies to the listed Honda EU1000, EU2200, and EU3000i Handi families—not automatically to every generator. Honda fuel recommendations

For a generator improperly stored with gasoline, Champion says the fuel must be drained and the carburetor thoroughly cleaned before the unit is run. Generac notes that fuel can remain in the carburetor bowl even after draining the tank. These are model-dependent service tasks; Champion describes carburetor cleanup as technically advanced and directs owners who are unsure to technical support. Work through a safe restart decision
- Identify the generator. Find its make and model, confirm whether it uses gasoline, propane, or another fuel, and obtain the matching owner’s manual. Follow that manual’s procedures.
- Establish whether gasoline was left in it. If it may have remained in the tank or carburetor, do not attempt a start on that fuel.
- Drain and service it as directed. Use the manual’s fuel-draining and storage instructions. If old gasoline was left in the system, account for fuel in the carburetor as well as the tank. Get model-specific assistance if you are not comfortable with the work.
- Check basic items only according to the manual. Generac’s general checklist includes fuel type and supply, oil level, choke and switch positions, spark plug, air filter, and electric-start issues. It is not a substitute for your model’s instructions. Generac troubleshooting guidance
- Test-run it outdoors. Never run a generator inside a house or garage. Choose a safe outdoor location and follow the placement and operating precautions in the manual. Generac portable-generator safety guidance
When to stop and get help
If draining fuel or cleaning the carburetor is outside your comfort level, ask the manufacturer’s technical support or a qualified small-engine technician for model-specific help. If the generator will not start or runs poorly after the prescribed cleanup and checks, stop rather than repeatedly trying to run it; use the manual’s troubleshooting steps or have it inspected. Old fuel can cause faults, but the available information cannot establish the condition of this individual machine.
