The most budget-friendly outdoor kitchen can be a portable grill and rolling cart; the most involved is a custom build with planned utilities and finishes. Choose between them by how often you cook outside, how many people you usually serve, the space you have, and how much maintenance you want—not by designing for a rare big party. As Rebekah Zaveloff, co-founder and creative director of Imparfait Design Studio, puts it: “The first question I ask clients is how often do you grill, and for how many people.”

Seven outdoor kitchen ideas, from movable to custom

These are adaptable concepts, not fixed-price packages. Actual cost depends on location, site conditions, materials, labor, equipment, and utility work. Start with the simplest setup that supports your normal routine; you can add features later.

1. Portable grill and rolling cart

Pair a portable gas or charcoal grill with a rolling cart for storage and extra counter space. It is a practical starting point for smaller yards, patios, or renters who need a setup they can move. This Old House describes movable equipment and less expensive materials as ways to keep a project simpler; the cost still depends on the products and location. Site the grill according to its manual and local rules.

2. Linear grill-and-prep station

Place a grill and prep counter in one straight run, either against a suitable wall or as a freestanding unit. A linear arrangement can work where space or budget is constrained. Keep the sequence practical: bring food to the prep surface, move it to the grill, then serve without forcing guests through the cooking area. Confirm the grill’s clearances and installation requirements for the specific location.

3. DIY prep and storage counter

Build the useful basics first: a stable frame, outdoor-suitable work surface, and storage for tools or serving items. Add appliances only if they fit the plan and the structure. Lowe’s lists a drill/driver, tape measure, level, and square among common tools, and calls for outdoor-rated counter and cladding materials. Before building, consider your skills, structural loads, local requirements, and the appliance maker’s installation directions.

4. Prefab or modular island

A modular island can provide a more integrated appearance without commissioning a fully custom design. This Old House describes basic prefab examples that include an island, counter, grill, and propane-access doors, with upgrades available separately; that description is not a specification for every product. Compare actual dimensions, included components, outdoor suitability, assembly or installation needs, and the cost of any extra utilities or finishes.

5. L-shaped cooking and serving zone

An L-shaped plan uses a corner to distinguish the cooking run from a serving or social area. It can suit small or medium spaces when the footprint is laid out carefully. Keep the cook’s prep and grill zone clear of guest traffic, and place serving space where people can gather without crossing the working route.

6. Entertaining kitchen with selected conveniences

Add only features your household will use regularly. Depending on habits and space, that might mean a small seating area, task lighting, extra storage, a refrigerator, a sink, or another cooking appliance. Each addition can bring installation, utility, cleaning, and upkeep considerations. Homes & Gardens cautions against planning around an imagined annual crowd; size the space for ordinary use first.

7. Custom kitchen with planned infrastructure

A custom design allows the layout, storage, appliances, counter space, lighting, and optional shelter to work together. It also has the widest scope for added structure, groundworks, drainage, utility runs, and fabrication. Decide early which features are essential, and plan their infrastructure before settling on finishes. For fixed electrical, water, gas, or propane work, consult local authorities and use appropriately licensed contractors.

How much does it cost to build an outdoor kitchen?

There is no single dependable price for every yard. Homes & Gardens gives rough 2026 ranges of $2,000–$8,000 for basic, $8,000–$20,000 for mid-range, and $20,000–$100,000+ for high-end outdoor kitchens. These are guide estimates, not a national survey, guaranteed quote, or directly comparable installed-cost dataset. This Old House attributes an average of $16,145 to Angi, but does not state the figure’s year on its page; it should not be treated as a 2026 estimate or compared as if it covered the same scope as the Homes & Gardens ranges.

To make estimates useful, compare the same scope rather than just the grill or island price. Include the equipment, counters and cladding, groundwork, labor, permits, installation, and the distance utilities must run. A movable setup can avoid some permanent work; custom infrastructure and extra appliances can expand the project substantially.

Choose a layout and materials for how you use the space

Map the route from food storage and preparation to cooking and serving. Preserve practical working space around the chosen appliances, and keep social areas connected to the cook where possible. Before selecting counters, cabinets, or equipment, consider exposure to UV, moisture, temperature changes, grease, and the cleaning routine you can maintain. Materials should suit the local climate and outdoor use; there is no universally best countertop material established for every setting.

Evaluate outdoor-rated equipment for durability, maintenance, fuel, warranty, footprint, and installation requirements. Check that the components you combine are suitable for their exposure and compatible with the planned layout. A sheltered location may change exposure, but any cover must still meet the appliance maker’s requirements and local rules.

Plan permits, utilities, and safety before construction

  • Ask local officials and, where applicable, your HOA about permits and building rules, particularly if the project involves electrical, gas, or plumbing lines.
  • Use appropriately licensed professionals for fixed utility connections. Permanent natural-gas lines should be installed by licensed professionals, and shut-off valves should be accessible near cooking zones.
  • Check the appliance manual and local requirements for clearances, ventilation, overhead cover, electrical work, and installation. Setbacks and other safety details vary; a generic distance is not a substitute for the applicable instructions.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, as Lowe’s recommends, and follow the selected appliance’s safety guidance.
