For a small garden, look for bush, dwarf, or compact cultivars of beans, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and lima beans. Those labels describe useful growth habits—not a guarantee that a plant will stay tiny or need no support. Check each variety’s mature height and spread, support requirements, and local planting window before buying.
How to choose compact vegetables
“Bush” and “dwarf” are helpful clues when space is limited, but plants with low growth can still spread broadly. The University of Maryland Extension recommends seeking bush or dwarf varieties and notes that many tomato and cucumber cultivars are bred for small-space gardens. Compare the mature dimensions on the seed packet or catalog with the space available, and confirm whether the plant needs a stake, cage, or trellis.
Container suitability depends on the crop and cultivar, not just the label. Extension guides from Maryland, Illinois, and Colorado State offer crop-specific container and support guidance. For warm-season tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and squash grown in containers, Maryland Extension advises 6–8 hours of direct sunlight. That figure is specific to those crops in its container guidance, not a universal rule for every vegetable.
Seven bushy vegetables to consider
1. Bush beans
Bush beans grow as self-supporting plants rather than climbing vines, unlike pole beans. This makes them a straightforward option for a bed or a suitably sized container. Choose a bush cultivar and check its listed spread; “bush” does not tell you how much room a particular variety needs. UF/IFAS explains the distinction between bush and pole beans and provides Florida-specific planting guidance in its bush bean guide.

2. Bush summer squash
Look for summer squash varieties described as bush or compact if you want to avoid the long vines common in other types. Bush growth can still occupy substantial bed space, so compare mature spread before planting. Some cultivars may suit large containers, but verify the specific variety’s space and support needs; Maryland Extension includes squash among warm-season container crops. Plant according to your local frost and season guidance rather than a general calendar.
3. Bush cucumbers
Some cucumbers are bred for compact or bush growth, while others produce long vines. A compact cultivar may fit a bed or a large container more readily, but its label does not guarantee a narrow footprint. Check whether the variety benefits from or requires a trellis, and use the listed mature spread to decide if it fits your space.

4. Compact tomatoes
Tomatoes range from compact plants to large, sprawling vines. Select a cultivar specifically described as dwarf, compact, or suitable for containers, then check its mature height and spread and whether it needs a cage or stake. Maryland Extension identifies tomato as a warm-season container crop and recommends 6–8 hours of direct sun for that use. A container-friendly label is not a substitute for checking the plant’s actual dimensions.
5. Compact peppers
Compact pepper cultivars can work in garden beds or containers when their mature size matches the available space. Check the variety description for height, spread, and any support advice rather than assuming all peppers stay small. For container-grown warm-season peppers, Maryland Extension’s guidance is 6–8 hours of direct sunlight.

6. Compact eggplant
Some eggplant cultivars have a more compact habit and can be candidates for beds or containers. Confirm the mature spread and whether the selected plant needs support; size and structure vary by cultivar. Maryland Extension includes eggplant among warm-season container crops and gives a 6–8-hour direct-sun recommendation for this group.
7. Bush lima beans
Bush lima beans offer a non-climbing form for gardeners who want lima beans without choosing a pole type. Check the packet for mature dimensions and any support guidance, since the word “bush” alone does not establish the space needed. Match the planting window to your region
There is no single planting calendar that works across all gardens: climate, frost dates, and suitable cultivars vary by location. Use a local extension calendar or ask your county extension service for planting dates and varieties adapted to your area. For examples of region-specific guidance, UF/IFAS publishes a Florida Vegetable Gardening Guide, while Texas A&M AgriLife recommends regional variety selection and local advice in its Texas Home Vegetable Gardening Guide.
