Landscape Hedge Ideas: 63 Ways to Choose a Hedge That Fits Your Yard

Start with what your hedge needs to do—screen, define, shelter or support wildlife—then choose plants and a style suited to your site and maintenance budget.

The best landscape hedge is the one that suits its job, site and upkeep—not a universally “best” plant. Decide first whether you need year-round privacy, a seasonal screen, a boundary, wind protection, a low formal edge, flowers or wildlife habitat. Then match plants to your climate, sun, soil, drainage, available width and desired mature height. The numbered design “#39” cannot be identified from the available information, so no particular image or planting is attributed to it here.

Choose the hedge’s job before choosing plants

A hedge is a row of closely planted shrubs or trees that grow together to form a barrier or screen, according to the Royal Horticultural Society’s guide to growing hedges. Its purpose shapes the design: a privacy screen has different needs from a low edge or a flowering border.

  • Privacy or an unattractive view: Decide how much screening you need and whether it must continue through winter.
  • Boundary or path definition: Choose a height and width that mark the space without obstructing access or taking over a narrow yard.
  • Wind or drifting snow: A hedge can filter wind and trap snow; consider exposure and the room available for plants to mature.
  • Flowers and wildlife: An informal or mixed planting can add seasonal interest and habitat for birds and other wildlife.
  • A crisp garden edge: A formal, regularly trimmed hedge can provide a defined line, but it takes more pruning.

Decide whether winter screening is essential

Evergreens retain foliage year-round and are the natural starting point when privacy through winter is a priority. Deciduous shrubs provide their fullest screen during the growing season; bare branches still offer some structure and shelter, but they do not provide the same visual cover as evergreen foliage.

For a small suburban boundary, a single row may be the practical choice. A larger native hedgerow can instead use multiple rows of trees and shrubs to create more habitat, but it requires substantially more width. Do not treat a wide, multi-row planting as a ready-made plan for a tight lot.

  • ❄️ HARDY, LOW MAINTENANCE & RELIABLE: Adaptable to many soil types and climates. Requires minimal care once established and returns year after year.

Match the design to the available space and site

Measure the planting area and compare it with the plants’ mature height and width. A hedge that grows beyond its allotted space can demand repeated corrective pruning; choosing a plant solely for fast coverage can create the same problem. Check local guidance for species suited to your climate and site.

  • Light: Note whether the planting area is full sun, part shade or a mix. If conditions vary along the hedge, check whether candidate plants tolerate the less-sunny sections.
  • Soil and drainage: Assess the soil and whether water drains well before settling on a plant.
  • Exposure and footprint: Consider wind, the hedge’s mature width, and space for maintenance access.
  • Local risks: Verify pest and disease susceptibility, deer pressure, and invasive-plant concerns in your area. A regional Ohio extension response flags Chinese privet as invasive and English laurel as toxic because it contains cyanide; these are warnings to check locally, not a complete list of regional restrictions or hazards.

For example, a reader screening a 20-foot stretch in Ohio, with mostly full sun, part shade at one end and a desired height of 10–15 feet, still needs to compare local plant suitability, mature width and site conditions before choosing an evergreen. Those details do not establish one best plant for every yard.

Choose between formal, informal and mixed planting

Formal and sheared

A formal hedge is kept to a defined shape by trimming. It suits a precise boundary or low edge, but the clipped appearance comes with repeated upkeep. Pruning frequency depends on species: RHS guidance gives examples ranging from one to three trims a year, not one schedule for every hedge.

Informal and natural-shaped

An informal hedge keeps more of each plant’s natural form and usually needs less pruning than a sheared hedge. Allow enough room for the mature shape, and trim annually once the hedge has reached the desired size, adjusting timing to the species and local conditions.

Mixed for resilience

A mix of plant types can reduce the chance that a problem affecting one type damages the entire row, according to University of Maryland Extension. That is a resilience strategy, not a guarantee against pests or disease. Mixing deciduous and evergreen species can make pruning more complicated because their timing differs; simpler groupings may be easier to maintain.

Plan spacing and planting carefully

Spacing depends on plant type, mature size and whether the hedge will be formal or informal. The following figures are contextual guides, not interchangeable rules:

Guidance Spacing advice How to apply it
Iowa State University Extension 1–2½ feet between shrubs for formal hedges; informal hedge spacing based on mature plant size. Use the formal range only where it fits the species and design; allow informal plants room to reach their natural size.
Royal Horticultural Society A broad guide of 30–60 cm, with species-specific spacing advice. Check the guidance for the exact species and planting situation rather than treating the range as a universal prescription.

Planting windows also depend on stock type and region. Iowa State University Extension describes late March to mid-May, before bud break, for bare-root shrubs; it gives spring or late summer to early fall for container-grown and balled-and-burlapped plants. Check local advice and the plant supplier’s instructions before planting. Hedge plants can be purchased bare-root, in containers or balled-and-burlapped; verify their mature dimensions and suitability for your region.

Understand the ongoing pruning commitment

Once a hedge reaches its desired height and width, regular trimming removes most young growth. RHS guidance generally calls for an informal hedge to be trimmed once a year and a formal hedge one, two or three times a year, depending on species. Its examples include box at two or three cuts during the growing season, holly once in late summer, privet two or three times, and hornbeam once in mid- to late summer. Do not transfer one species’ schedule to another.

Ligustrum Waxleaf Privet - 15 Live Plants - Evergreen Privacy Hedge
  • This upright deciduous, occasionally semi-evergreen, shrub blooms creamy-white, fragrant flowers followed by round blue-black fruit. Its dark green and bright green glossy foliage has larger leaves compared to the Sinense. This fast grower will reach 8-10 feet high. Its dense and bushy characteristics make it ideal for a privacy screen, wind screen, hedging, and small tree, while adding great color to your garden.
  • This low-maintenance evergreen needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Responds well to pruning. Shearing is recommended 2-3 per year to maintain desired shape. Mulching is recommended to detour weeds, retain moisture, and keep temperatures low.
  • Compact habit with glossy foliage responds well to pruning into topiary or small standard trees. Displays a profusion of white blooms. Useful hedge, screen or windbreak. Performs well in containers and as a topiary specimen. Evergreen.
  • Because of their versatility and undemanding nature, they are used extensively in home landscapes. Plant them as hedges, foundation plants, patio trees or in shrub borders.
  • These shrubs are grown primarily for the dense foliage they can provide when pruned into hedges. That dense foliage, along with their height, means that they afford good privacy during the summertime when folks are most active in their backyards.

For large-leaved cherry laurel, the RHS recommends making individual cuts with secateurs or loppers where practical: hedge trimmers can leave visibly cut leaf surfaces. This is a specific consideration for that plant, not a rule for all hedges. Check for nesting birds before trimming; their presence may mean delaying the work.

When choosing tools, match them to the hedge and the finish you want. Hedge shears or a hedge trimmer are relevant to a regularly sheared hedge, while large leaves may call for hand tools to avoid ragged cut surfaces. Follow local wildlife guidance and use tools appropriate to the work.
