Capital One Arena is hosting events again after its summer 2026 construction period, but the renovation is not finished. Fans attending the Capitals’ October 7, 2026 home opener were advised to allow extra time, follow posted signs and follow directions from arena and construction staff. Check the instructions for your specific event before setting out.
Is Capital One Arena open during renovations?
Yes. The arena resumed regular event use after summer 2026 work, and the Washington Capitals returned for their home opener on October 7. Construction is continuing, including work on F Street, so an event taking place does not mean the surrounding work is complete. Axios reported the return to regular use; the Capitals’ October 1 event notice identified ongoing F Street construction.
What should visitors do before arriving?
Access conditions can vary by event and by construction phase. For the October 7 Capitals opener, the team advised attendees to allow extra travel time, watch for posted signs and follow directions from Monumental Sports & Entertainment and Clark Construction staff. Do not assume the same entrance, curb access or route applies to every event.
- Open the arena’s Know Before You Go page and find the guidance for your event.
- Review the arena’s visitor policies and any event-specific instructions.
- Allow extra time to get to the venue, then follow current posted signage and directions from arena and construction staff.
What is under construction, and when is the work expected to finish?
The renovation is a phased project rather than a single closure. The arena’s renovation FAQ says work began in December 2024, is divided into six phases and is targeted for completion in time for the 2027–28 NBA and NHL seasons. The arena says it remains open during NBA and NHL seasons, with major construction concentrated in summer months; that is the published plan, not a guarantee that future dates or access conditions cannot change.

|---|---|
| December 2024 onward | Preparation for the renovation. |
| Summer 2025 | Work in athlete and fan spaces. |
| 2025–26 season | Preparation for exterior updates. |
| Summer 2026 | Major exterior work, alongside continued concessions and suite upgrades. |
| 2026–27 season | Further club-level and interior work. |
| Summer 2027 | Final interior work and work on the Gallery Place atrium. |
| Target | Completion in time for the 2027–28 NBA and NHL seasons. |
The public-facing plans include a new accessible entrance on 6th Street, a new F Street entrance, façade improvements, changes to the Gallery Place atrium, more restrooms, revised concessions, upgraded suites, improved corridors and navigation, and improvements to athlete and fan facilities. The National Capital Planning Commission’s September 2025 project synopsis describes priorities including entry points, accessibility, player and fan facilities, and façade improvements. These planned upgrades do not establish which entrances or amenities are available for a particular event today.
How large is the project?
Public descriptions use different cost figures, which should not be treated as a reconciled final total. Axios described the transformation as “$1 billion-plus” in its October 7, 2026 report. Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s August 2026 announcement described an “$800 million-plus” renovation. The available descriptions do not explain the difference. Monumental’s announcement also characterized the project as an $800 million-plus renovation.

Axios reported Monumental’s account that several hundred construction workers were on site per day over the summer and that six months of typical construction work had been compressed into three months. Those are operator-reported figures, not independently audited measures. Jim Van Stone, Monumental’s president of business operations and chief commercial officer, said, “We think this will be the best arena in the country.” That is the executive’s view, not an independent ranking.
