The planned replacement and realignment of Nithi Bridge are not independently confirmed to be under active construction. Reports in August and September 2026 say compensation and land acquisition were still in progress, while KeNHA has said works would begin after the contractor received possession of affected land. The project is intended to address a hazardous A9 crossing, but no available evidence establishes that the redesign will eliminate accidents.
Where Nithi Bridge is and why the crossing is hazardous
Nithi Bridge carries the Makutano–Embu–Meru A9 road, about 48 kilometres from Embu Town between Mitheru and Marima Centre, according to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) 2025 tender. The tender describes the existing crossing as a 50-metre, three-span composite steel-and-concrete bridge on a sharp curve with a 90-metre radius. Its approaches form an S-curve, with gradients ranging from 10% to 24%.
Those conditions can make it difficult for drivers to see the road ahead and control vehicles, particularly buses and trucks. KeNHA also identifies challenging terrain and driver conduct—including disregard for speed limits and lane discipline—as contributing risks. In February 2026, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli described the area as high-risk because of restrictive road geometry, limited sight distances and steep curves, as quoted by Citizen Digital.
There is no verified fatality count in the available reporting. MyGov says generally that the bridge has claimed many lives since 1985, but provides no number; a precise total should not be treated as established without an attributable official record.

What the planned project is supposed to change
KeNHA’s 2025 tender describes a new bridge, an improved road alignment and grade-separated intersections intended to separate opposing traffic. Its scope includes a two-lane Nairobi-bound road, service roads, one grade-separated interchange, three overpasses or underpasses, and a bridge across the Nithi River. The tender gives an approximate overall alignment length of 4.2 kilometres.
Other government reporting describes different dimensions. A 24 March 2026 MyGov Kenya article reported an 880-metre bridge and a 2.7-kilometre realignment. The tender’s 4.2-kilometre figure refers to the overall alignment, while MyGov’s figures describe the bridge and realignment separately. The available sources do not reconcile these descriptions, so they should not be combined into one definitive design specification.

MyGov also reported proposed speed cameras and a 70 km/h limit. These are reported plans, not confirmation that the measures are already in operation. The redesign is intended to improve safety, but its eventual effect on crashes cannot be guaranteed in advance; road geometry, vehicle condition and driver behaviour all matter.
What has to happen before construction can proceed
Land acquisition and compensation are central dependencies. On 25 February 2026, KeNHA said construction would begin after the contractor obtained full possession of the affected parcels, according to Citizen Digital. On 27 May, the Kenya News Agency (KNA) reported that KeNHA and the National Land Commission (NLC) had held a public sensitization forum for affected landowners and begun a valuation and compensation roadmap.

KNA reported on 18 August 2026 that property valuations were complete and the NLC was undertaking final compensation computation before payments. On 10 September, a secondary social-media profile reposted remarks attributed to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki saying the contractor had reported but would commence after acquisition and compensation. These updates indicate preparatory activity, not proof that all affected land has been handed over or that major civil works are underway.
Interim safety work is distinct from the permanent project. KeNHA’s tender lists reinstated crash barriers and guardrails with reflectors, warning signs and chevrons on both approaches, road remarking and rumble strips on descents. Those measures are intended to mitigate risks while the larger works are pending; they do not mean the replacement bridge is complete.

Published cost estimates differ, and neither cited figure is established as the final awarded contract value.

The differing estimates may reflect different scope descriptions, design stages or cost estimates. The material available does not establish which, if either, is the final contract value.

The clearest confirmation that construction has moved beyond preparation would be an official update from KeNHA or the NLC confirming compensation, possession of the affected parcels and active civil works. A contractor’s presence or readiness alone does not establish that the site is available for construction.
