If you need a hole in textile, look for a purpose-made manual fabric punch and check that it suits the material and hole you need. If you are preparing leather for hand stitching, use leathercraft tools such as a stitching chisel or awl—not a general-purpose fabric punch.
Start with the material and the purpose
“Drilling through fabric” can mean several different jobs: perforating a textile, making a row of holes for hand stitching leather, making a single round hole in leather, or piercing material as a sewing machine stitches. Those tasks call for different tools. A power drill is not established as an appropriate choice for cloth by the sources cited here.
- Textile perforation: A manual fabric punch is a distinct tool category designed to perforate textile materials. The Getty Research Institute’s Art & Architecture Thesaurus record notes that some punches offer variable or adjustable sizes.
- Leather hand stitching: A stitching chisel or pricking iron makes a regularly spaced line of holes; an awl can pierce or prepare individual holes.
- Single round holes in leather: A drive punch makes an individual round hole, while a revolving punch offers multiple sizes, according to Colorado State University Extension’s leathercraft manual.
- Sewing-machine stitching: A sewing needle pierces material as part of stitching; it is not a substitute for a punch intended to make a larger hole.
Perforating textile fabric
A purpose-made manual fabric punch is the tool category supported for perforating textile. The Getty record does not compare punch designs or specify which one is suitable for a particular weave, knit, thickness, or finish. Before choosing a tool, identify the fabric, the required hole size, and what the hole is for; do not assume that an adjustable punch or a power drill will work for every textile.
Preparing leather for hand stitching
Use a stitching chisel or pricking iron for a spaced stitch line
Leatherworking guidance from Santa Clara University’s Maker Lab describes stitching chisels and pricking irons as tools for marking and punching hand-stitching holes. George Fox University’s Maker Hub also describes preparing leather for hand sewing with an awl or stitching chisel.

Keep the stitching chisel perpendicular to the leather so the holes align on the reverse. George Fox recommends placing a scrap wood block underneath when striking a chisel with a rawhide hammer. A suitable support beneath the leather also helps protect the work surface while punching.
Choose a round punch when the job calls for a round hole
A drive punch and a revolving punch serve a different purpose from a stitching chisel: they are for round holes, rather than a line of stitch-spacing holes. Colorado State University Extension recommends a cutting surface beneath the leather when punching. The choice between a single-size drive punch and a multi-size revolving punch depends on the hole required; the cited manual does not provide comparative performance testing.

Choosing a needle for sewing-machine stitching
Needle choice is about stitching through material, not making a larger standalone hole. New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension’s sewing-machine guidance advises matching needle diameter to the fabric and thread; it identifies ballpoint needles for knits and wedge needles for leather. Those needle types are not interchangeable with fabric punches, awls, or leather drive punches.

What the available guidance does not establish
The cited sources support a distinction between textile punches, leatherworking tools, and sewing-machine needles. They do not provide fabric-by-fabric punch recommendations, head-to-head tool testing, or evidence that drilling cloth with an ordinary power drill is safe or effective. Choose a tool for the material and intended hole rather than treating “drilling” as one universal method.
