To make a dried flower bouquet, start with clean, undamaged blooms, dry them using a method suited to their shape, then arrange the brittle stems with care. Air-drying is a simple, low-cost option for many flowers; silica gel is better when a delicate bloom needs support to retain its form. A dried bouquet can extend the decorative life of garden flowers or preserve blooms from a meaningful occasion.
Choose flowers and prepare them for drying
Good results begin before drying. Choose flowers without bruises, disease, insects, or surface moisture. For air-drying, cut flowers before they are fully open because they may continue to open as they dry. Remove foliage from the stems, and harvest after the dew has dried. Damp flowers are poor candidates for any drying method.
Flower choice affects the result: air-dried blooms can become stiff, shrink, or lose color, and color retention varies by flower. Illinois Extension notes that blue and yellow flowers retain color better than pink flowers when air-dried. Illinois Extension’s guide to drying flowers describes air-drying as the easiest and most common way to preserve most flowers.

How to air-dry flowers
- Make small bundles. Gather a few stems together and secure them with a rubber band or twist tie. These can tighten as the stems shrink. Hang larger flower heads individually.
- Hang them upside down. Choose a dark, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
- Allow time to dry. A general estimate is one to three weeks; Illinois Extension gives two to three weeks as a rule of thumb. Flower thickness and drying conditions affect the time.
- Check the stems before arranging. Once dry, handle them gently because dried stems and petals are brittle.
When to use silica gel
Silica gel is useful for blooms that wilt readily or need extra support to hold their form. Place flowers in the drying agent in an airtight container, following the product’s instructions and precautions. Once dry, lift the blooms carefully and softly brush away any remaining material. Silica gel can be reused after it is dried again.
UF/IFAS also warns that prolonged exposure to borax dust may irritate the eyes, skin, or lungs. Follow handling precautions for any drying agent, and avoid creating dust.

Arrange the dried flowers into a bouquet
Reassemble a keepsake bouquet
If you plan to dry a special bouquet bloom by bloom, photograph it before taking it apart. After drying, attach florist wire to the flowers’ stems and wrap it with floral tape. Use the photo as a guide when rebuilding the arrangement.
Build a balanced design
Arrange with proportion, line, balance, and texture in mind rather than distributing blooms uniformly. Vary the shapes and heights of the flowers, and make adjustments gently to avoid snapping brittle stems. Care for a dried bouquet
Keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight, which can fade flowers. Dried flowers may last about a year as an arrangement, according to UC Agriculture and Natural Resources; this is general guidance, not a guarantee for every flower or home. Handle the bouquet gently when moving or dusting it.
If collecting flowers or foliage from wild areas, check local restrictions, avoid protected species, and do not deplete a plant population.
