A high-CFM range hood is only a good choice if its canopy captures cooking emissions, its duct system can deliver the rated airflow, and the resulting sound and make-up-air needs suit your home. Choose by comparing verified airflow, hood coverage, duct route, noise, and installation requirements—not by maximum CFM alone.
How many CFM do you need for your range hood?
CFM means cubic feet per minute: a measure of the volume of air a fan moves. It does not tell you by itself how much cooking plume the hood captures, nor how much air the installed system will move. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cites 100 CFM for a typical range as an ASHRAE/HVI recommendation. Treat that as a broad reference, not a universal sizing rule for every cooktop, high-output burner, or local code. EPA’s kitchen ventilation guidance also says the hood should capture combustion products and vent them directly outdoors.
For a particular kitchen, begin with the cooking appliance and hood manufacturer’s instructions, then consider cooking intensity, hood dimensions and placement, and the planned duct route. Some manufacturers publish burner-output rules of thumb; these are starting points, not substitutes for installation instructions or code review.
Is a higher-CFM range hood better?
Not automatically. A hood has to capture the plume over the burners before it can exhaust it. A wider or deeper capture area, appropriate mounting height, and suitable wall or island placement all affect performance. The U.S. Department of Energy’s existing-homes guidance favors a hood that is wider and deeper than the cooking surface where feasible, with short, straight ducting sized to the hood’s instructions. DOE’s exhaust-fan guidance explains the value of a direct, correctly sized duct route.

Airflow claims also need context. Broan distinguishes maximum blower airflow from operating airflow: duct length, diameter, bends, and installation conditions can reduce what the system delivers. When comparing models, look for HVI-certified performance or operating airflow at stated conditions, not just a prominent maximum-CFM figure. HVI’s voluntary certification program and product directory can help verify exact models; the directory is updated at least monthly and, as of September 2, 2026, listed more than 2,800 residential ventilation products—not range hoods alone. Check the HVI Certified Products Directory.
EPA’s 2024 IndoorAirPlus Version 2 advisory recommends at least 70% capture efficiency for range hoods and microwave-range hoods tested under ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method. This is a program advisory, not a universal legal requirement. See EPA’s IndoorAirPlus Version 2 materials.

What should you compare when choosing a high-CFM hood?
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Airflow | HVI-certified performance or operating airflow at stated conditions; distinguish it from maximum blower CFM. | The installed system may deliver less air than the fan’s maximum rating. |
| Capture coverage | Hood width and depth relative to the cooktop, mounting height, and wall or island location. | The hood must intercept the plume while it is still over the cooking surface. |
| Duct compatibility | Required duct diameter and shape, route length, turns, and exterior termination, according to the hood’s manual. | Restrictive or poorly planned ducting can compromise airflow. |
| Sound | Sones at the speed and airflow you expect to use, including high-speed sound when relevant. | The loudest setting may not be comfortable for everyday cooking. |
| Make-up air | Local code, house conditions, and any combustion appliances, reviewed with a qualified installer. | Exhaust can depressurize a home; high airflow may require replacement air. |
| Maintenance and operating mode | Grease-filter access and cleaning, controls, and ducted versus recirculating operation. | Recirculation does not replace exhausting combustion products outdoors. |
What size duct do you need for a high-CFM range hood?
There is no safe universal duct diameter to recommend without the selected hood’s installation requirements. Check its manual before buying, and plan the route early—especially for an island installation or remodel where a long run may be unavoidable. Use the specified duct size and shape, keep the route as short and straight as practical, and account for bends and the exterior termination.
Broan advises using metal duct, preferring smooth metal to flexible duct, and warns against plastic and dryer duct. Follow the instructions for the exact hood model rather than reducing duct size to fit an existing opening without confirming compatibility. Broan-NuTone’s installation guides are one place to locate model-specific instructions.

Do you need make-up air for a 600 CFM range hood?
Possibly. Exhausting a large volume of air can lower indoor pressure, and the home may need a way to replace that air. Whether make-up air is required depends on locally adopted code and the house, including its combustion appliances; do not rely on an old threshold as a current nationwide rule. Ask a qualified installer to assess pressure and code requirements before choosing a high-airflow hood.
For a documented product example, Broan’s 2021 E60 Series specification lists a 600 CFM single-blower configuration and compatibility with MD6T/MD8T automatic make-up-air dampers. Those are manufacturer specifications for the listed configuration, not a finding that the hood will deliver 600 CFM in every installation. Confirm the exact model suffix and current configuration. Read the Broan E60 Series specification.

How loud is a 600 CFM range hood?
CFM does not determine sound on its own; compare the sound rating at the speed you are likely to use. Broan’s 2021 E60 specification lists up to 13.5 sones at high speed for the specified single-blower configuration. That is a manufacturer figure for the configuration and stated discharge conditions, not a measurement of a hood installed in your home. Check sound at lower operating speeds too, since maximum airflow may not be your everyday setting.
Should you choose ducted exhaust or recirculation?
Where feasible, a ducted hood that exhausts outdoors is the appropriate choice for removing combustion products; EPA specifically calls for direct outdoor venting. Recirculating kits filter and return air to the room and are not equivalent to outdoor exhaust for combustion products. Broan’s E60 specification lists an optional ANKE60 non-ducted recirculating kit and SV08343 replacement charcoal-filter retail pack. These are model-specific accessories, so verify compatibility and understand the limits of recirculation before selecting that configuration.

- Confirm filter access, cleaning requirements, controls, model suffix, and compatible accessories before purchase.
A documented high-CFM example
The Broan E60 Series is an example to evaluate, not a universal winner. Its 2021 manufacturer specification lists 30- to 48-inch widths, a single-blower airflow specification of 600 CFM, HVI certification, and compatibility with the MD6T/MD8T automatic make-up-air dampers. It also lists the optional ANKE60 recirculating kit and SV08343 replacement charcoal-filter retail pack. Verify model suffix, current availability, fit, duct route, and local requirements; the listed specifications do not establish independent comparative performance or current pricing.
