A conventional portable air conditioner needs an exhaust path to the outdoors; without one, it cannot properly remove heat and humidity from the room. If there is no suitable window, check whether the exact unit permits venting through an exterior door or a properly installed wall opening. If no approved outdoor route is available, consider installed cooling such as a ductless mini-split rather than running the portable AC unvented.
How a Portable AC Works
A portable AC moves heat from indoor air and rejects it through its condenser exhaust. GE Appliances warns that operating a portable AC without an exhaust vent will not remove heat and humidity from the room, and says not to exhaust into an attic or other indoor space. The hose must lead outdoors, following the instructions for the exact model.
Some products marketed as ventless air conditioners are evaporative coolers, not refrigerant ACs. Evaporative cooling can be useful in dry conditions, but it adds moisture and needs an air exit path. It is a poor fit for humid weather or a closed room. The U.S. Department of Energy and Australian Government cooling guidance describe these humidity and airflow limitations.
Options When There Is No Standard Window
Start by checking for a route directly outdoors and the portable AC manufacturer’s installation instructions. Hose diameter, permitted length, clearances, and acceptable venting methods vary by model; do not assume a longer hose or an overhead route is allowed. GE Appliances, for example, does not recommend extending the hose or venting through a ceiling or roof.

| Option | Outdoor heat exhaust? | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior door with compatible vent panel | Yes, if the panel and hose terminate outdoors | Confirm the panel fits securely and does not compromise door security or weather protection. Follow the AC manual. |
| Exterior-wall opening | Yes, if correctly installed and approved for the unit | Creates a building opening. Check permissions and local requirements, and seek qualified installation advice where needed. |
| Through-wall room AC or ductless mini-split | Uses installed equipment rather than a portable exhaust hose | DOE identifies room ACs designed for through-wall installation and ductless mini-split systems as cooling options. Feasibility and installation requirements depend on the building. |
| Evaporative cooler | Does not use a compressor exhaust hose | Different technology; best suited to dry conditions and requires an air exit path. It adds indoor humidity. |
A portable AC vent kit may be useful when it is compatible with the unit and provides a secure outdoor exhaust route. Treat the kit as a way to complete that route, not as a way to make an indoor or enclosed cavity suitable for exhaust.
Places Not to Vent the Exhaust
Do not direct hot condenser exhaust into another room, an attic, a closet, a wall cavity, or an enclosed ceiling space. Those locations do not carry the heat outdoors. GE Appliances specifically cautions against exhausting into an attic or other indoor space. Do not improvise a ceiling or roof route; follow the model manual and consult a qualified professional if a proposed route is not covered.

Portable AC or Evaporative Cooler?
Choose based on the room, climate, and whether you can provide the required airflow. An evaporative cooler is not a substitute for a portable AC in every climate: it adds moisture and needs air to leave the space. If the room must remain closed or the air is humid, it is unlikely to be a suitable workaround.
For portable AC performance, Consumer Reports’ testing summaries say single-hose units exhaust conditioned room air and can draw warm outdoor air back into the space; its summaries describe dual-hose units as doing somewhat better in chamber tests, while still performing below similarly sized window units. This is Consumer Reports’ reported testing, not a test conducted for this article.

Size the Cooling for the Room
Do not treat general room-air-conditioner sizing figures as a portable-AC selection chart. ENERGY STAR’s room AC guidance lists 5,000 Btu/h for 100–150 square feet and 6,000 Btu/h for 150–250 square feet, assuming an 8-foot ceiling; it also calls for adjustments for sun, shade, occupants, and kitchens. Use the guidance for its stated room-AC purpose and check the portable unit’s own rating and instructions when comparing portable models.
ENERGY STAR notes that an oversized room AC can cool the space before removing enough humidity, leaving it clammy. Consider room conditions as well as floor area, and avoid choosing a unit solely by the largest advertised number.

Setup and Safety Checklist
- Check the manual and permissions. Confirm the allowed exhaust route, hose specifications, clearances, and drain instructions for the exact model. Check landlord, building, and local requirements before making an opening.
- Route exhaust directly outdoors. Use a suitable door route or approved wall opening. Do not exhaust into the home, attic, or an enclosed cavity, and do not assume an extended hose or overhead route is acceptable.
- Plan for condensate. Follow the model’s drain instructions. Some units can fill their condensate container and stop cooling until it is emptied; the DOE portable-AC test procedure document notes this bucket-full condition.
- Use the unit as directed. Keep the installation and electrical connection within the manufacturer’s instructions. If the route requires construction or you have concerns about the electrical supply, seek qualified advice.
When to Choose Another Cooling System
If there is no compliant route for the portable AC exhaust, do not run it without its exhaust. Consider a ductless mini-split or a room AC designed for through-wall installation where appropriate. DOE identifies both as air-conditioning options; installation feasibility, permissions, and electrical needs depend on the building and equipment.
For a permanent opening, shared or multifamily building, or any route that is not clearly allowed by the equipment instructions, obtain building permission and qualified installation advice before work begins. A suitable installed system may be a better fit than forcing a portable unit into a room with no outdoor exhaust path.

FAQ
Can I use a portable air conditioner without a window?
Possibly, if the unit’s instructions allow another route that exhausts directly outdoors, such as a suitable exterior door setup or approved wall opening. Without an outdoor exhaust path, a conventional portable AC cannot properly remove heat and humidity.
Can I vent a portable AC into an attic or another room?
No. That sends the condenser heat into another part of the building rather than outdoors. GE Appliances specifically warns against exhausting into an attic or other indoor space.
Can I extend the portable AC hose or vent it through the ceiling?
Do not assume either is acceptable. Recommendations vary by model; GE Appliances does not recommend extending its hose or venting through a ceiling or roof. Check the exact unit manual before choosing a route.
Is an evaporative cooler the same as a portable AC?
No. An evaporative cooler uses evaporation rather than a refrigerant-based compressor system. It adds moisture, works best in dry conditions, and needs an air exit path.
What can I use if there is no way to vent outdoors?
Do not operate the portable AC without its exhaust. Consider installed cooling, such as a ductless mini-split or a room AC designed for through-wall installation, after checking feasibility and permissions.
